Title: WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST?
Post by: alandhopewell on June 27, 2012, 01:28:22 PM
Of all the places that are no longer a part of the scene, what do you miss the most? I'm talking about places you frequented.

     Here's mine....

I spent many a Saturday matinee there, not to mention going at other times, between 1958 and 1965, when it became a porno house. It was only a block and a half from our house, and my mother and her sibs grew up at the Dreamland, too.

Arcades at the mall.
In the 80's I skipped school, took a bus to the mall. That's why my grammar is bad. Yeah, yeah. :twirl:

Also... I never had the experience to go to a Drive-In theater as an adult...
I guess there all gone now though, right?

If there's an open drive-in near you, they'd probably know.

Glad to see the Sardust (http://www.stardustdrivein.com/) is still open.

I remember when it opened in 2003 the then general thought was these folks were CRAZY for building a new drive in. Looks like it is continuing to thrive!

I grew up as a military brat in Germany. Pretty much most of the US Army installations we used to frequent are long gone. I miss shopping at the commissary, renting tapes at the video store, picking up the latest Fangoria issue at the book store, or having hot breakfast served at the snack bar/canteen.

When I was a little girl, my mom would somtimes take me to WOOLWORTH'S.  It was a 5 & dime store (precurser to today's Dollar Stores).  Anyway, the place had a small eatery in the middle of the store. It had long counters with the old fashioned round, stool-like seats.  As a treat, I remember my mom would order vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup for the two of us.  Our little outing was very special to me ... something only the two of us shared. The store is long gone and my Mom has been gone almost 15 years now.  But the memory of the place still makes me ... smile.

I remember Woolworths 5 and 10. We had one in the local mall in N.J. (early 80's)

I also remember Clover's, BEST and Jefferson Ward.

There was an island on Cedar Creek Lake where you could find some AMAZING Indian artifacts falling right out of the vertical, 10 foot high cut banks - it was a killer site high water or low.  Then in 1998 they decided to put a couple of million dollar homes on the island, and bulkheaded all the way around to stop erosion - and, to add insult to injury, they dredged an enormous ditch in front of the bulkhead to provide backfill.  Now you can't find anything there.

Now as far as commercial establishments, I miss Ryan's Steakhouse here in Greenville, and Ninja's Japanese Grill.  Both excellent restaurants that closed up way too soon.

Similar to Indy's post, there was this small lake in Mississippi called Tweaky Park, It was open to the public before the gov't took over it for Seal Training. :hatred:

Back in the city, there was the local pharmacy called K&B's, which was 10x better than Wrong- I mean Rite-Aid. K&B's was always fully stocked with stuff we needed, but disappeared when Wrong-Aid took over it. Scumbag Wrong-Aid! :hatred: :hatred:

Also, there was a grocery store that was ran buy a local called...Schwagman's (don't even know if it is right) that had a single phone in the middle of the building  :bouncegiggle: but was shut down to do some corruption stuff. :tongueout: I remember it for having 4 different color toy tractors, I had 3 of them! :teddyr:

B-movies dominating late night TV before informercials. Obviously some were lucky enough to have horror hosts as well.

Kayfabe in pro wrestling.

Kids shows with local or national hosts.

News show that were more about actual news, matter of fact impartial just stating the facts, than entertainment.

The channels Scream and Drive-In Classics here in Canada.

Reruns being more predominant on the airwaves than reality TV and game shows.

Arcades and that sense of wonder back when video games first came out.

Maximes in Wigan. They'd been having rock nights there for over 20 years. Nothing but 70s and 80s classic rock, late 80s and early 90s glam and AOR. They stopped running it last year, so it's just a dance/techno club for skinheaded morons to take drugs at now. No more playing air guitar on the smoke filled dance floor next to women in lingerie and blokes with hair down to their feet. Got to see Magnum and Crashdiet there too. There was and now there is, nowhere like it...

We went to this drive-in frequently when I was a kid.  They tore it down and replaced it with a multiplex theater in 1982.  My wife and I still go to drive-ins occasionally, but now we need to drive almost an hour to get to the closest one.

I also miss Gino's fast-food restaurants, which were popular in the 1970s:

I miss our local drive-in theater too.  It closed decades ago.  I would LOVE for my wife and I to go see movies there, that would be so fun.  But the nearest one is a 2 1/2 drive.

Ah, yes.....Woolworth's, Kresgees, Neisner's, and the one nearest to us, a few doors north of the Dreamland, Scott's. Five and ten stores were cool.

the local drive-in movie theater is actually on top of an old grocery store that hasn't re-opened since Katrina. :tongueout: Once a month, they'll play a movie on top of there and admission is actually free since it's a public service.

I grew up in Cleburne,Texas and I miss several things no longer there:

Duke and Ayres....a fabulour two-story Five and Dime where we literally spend hours of our childhood

The City News Stand....they carried all the best and most recent comics

Kitchens Bakery....they made petit fours that were so scruptious that they melted in your mouth; I can close my eyes and still taste the vanilla

The Esquire Drive-In....spent many a Friday night there in the back of the pick-up; we saw all of Clint Eastwood's spaghetti westerns there

Tizer Ice was my favourite drink EVER. It always tasted cold even when you hadn't put it the refrigerator. They stopped making it, I think because it didn't sell too well and because it had some weird chemical in it, but I still would've drank it.

I miss record stores in general, but particularly Tower Records. I was fortunate enough to have one open in my home town (Paramus, NJ) in the '80s and were the ultimate record store for the hardcore collector/geek. Most "mall" record stores might have the latest release by a certain band and maybe a best-of collection, but Tower would have every single thing they ever released, including CD singles, imports, live discs, etc., etc.... If they didn't stock it, it didn't exist.

In the early 90s I worked @ the Kmart next door to Tower and spent every lunch hour there poring through the stacks of CDs. I was there so much that people assumed I worked there and started asking me where to find such-and-such a CD.

I miss the fields, orchards, and forest out by my father's house.  Spent hours out there with one of the dogs (Topper or Bozo), a backback with some water and a container or two for gathering berries in the right seasons, and my bb gun or .22.  In the summer there would be these huge grasshoppers along the fields that I'd use the bb gun again.

I miss the neighborhood around my mom's house.  We spent our summers playing war with plastic guns, running through fields, crawling along hedgerows, and sneaking behind cars.  I knew every tree, every fence and hedge (and every hole through a fence), and every shed in that neighborhood.

I miss arcades too but not as much as some might.. I do have a classic arcade downtown I can go to, and I have my own mini-arcade in my house and tons of old games on my computer.  So I'm generally happy with that.
Drive-ins I also miss.  Got 2 or 3 still in Oregon but they're only seasonal and play only new stuff.
From what I recall Mr. Steak was rather good back in the day.

I miss Midnight Dragon Beer.
Midnight Dragon was a short lived but oh-so-tasty cheap swill brew that my friends and I discovered when we were in college. It came in three varieties - beer (blue label), ale (green label) or malt liquor (tan label). This stuff was a Godsend to us broke college kids cuz a 40 oz. bottle was only a buck and a quarter.

The only problem was the only store near campus that sold it was close to "the projects," so we always made sure to go down there to stock up before it got dark.

Many was the time my friends and I would pool together our loose change and singles in hopes of reaching the "magic number" of $15.00, cuz that would buy us a whole case (!) of a dozen 40s, which would last us most of a weekend.

I haven't seen it since the mid 90s so I assume that it's no longer produced. The company that made it now makes Arizona Iced Tea if I'm not mistaken.

There used to be a restaurant near my home called Parasson's.  It was an Italian restaurant that I thought made the best pizza. They closed the Cleveland one down many many years ago and for all I knew the entire franchise had gone out of business.  Sadly I learned the still exist in Akron, where I spent the last two years of my college education.  On one of my last days there, I took a bus ride out a few miles and saw one. It wasn't close enough to campus to walk (I had no car at this time).  Now I'm back in Cleveland so its still in state but hard to justify the drive just for dinner.

I've got a few of those that were in an old comic store in Manchester, picked them up the day before the IRA bombed us.

Toby's Good Eats on Bloor Street West in Toronto. Seriously good food: burgers like no others, home fries, shakes and sundaes.  Part of a great Thursday night after closing at the college pub.  The one in Hamilton is a very good approximation, all it really lacks is a certain nostalgia.

I had an Aladdin's Castle too!  Vancouver Mall in Washington (HUGE two story mall).  When I visited my mom on weekends she'd take me there.  I think it was actually 6 tokens for a buck at one time.  Saw the debut of many great games there, including Kung Fu Master.

Mrs. Baird's French Pasteries.....they were so dang good! And so few folks remember them. They were round chocolate cake bowls filled with whipped cream, covered in chocolate and the top sprinkled with pecans. Man! I adored those!

That reminds me... ANN PAGE Spanish Bar...a cellophane wrapped little layer cake...dark kind-of-like gingerbread, but subtler, with white icing that was perfect on top of and in the middle of that moist cake... with raisins.  I used to method-ic-ally pick them OUT of the cake... I might eat the whole cake, but maybe, maybe, only ONE raisin.  Sold at the A&P.
