I find it a tad odd that they used the Claude Rains Phantom movie instead of the more famous Lon Chaney version, but otherwise that's pretty cool.

I guess they just didn't want to have a silent movie in the collection.

I find it odd as well-I,personally think the Chaney Phantom was so much better.
And Chaney's HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME isnt here either.
It may also be because both are so available elsewhere...as both are public domain titles.

The sad fact is no really good prints seem to exist of the two Chaney classics. HUNCHBACK in particular looks pretty grim, even in the most recent extensive restorations.

It's pretty much the same release Universal did for their DVD Essential Monsters Collection first when that came out now upgraded to Blu-Ray. I have the same set of films on an old DVD collection...I also have many of the same films again on later boxed set releases based on the different monsters. The 3D is new though.

One thing I would have done differently is in releasing eight of the most iconic monster movies.  Eight isn't a good monster number.  You want 13 of the most iconic monsters.  Thirteen is a much better monster number.  More spooky.

I'd say Hunchback of Notre Dame, the Chaney Phantom of the Opera, The Mummy's hand (which really has the type of Mummy people are more used to anyway), and at least one of the Monster rally movies should be added.

Not exactly sure which rally though.  Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein is by far the best of them, but they might want to want to go a bit more serious, so House of Frankenstein or House of Dracula might fit better.
