Title: Archeology and Theology . . .
Post by: indianasmith on July 19, 2012, 02:51:38 PM
Just finished up Vacation Bible School at my church (after spending last week helping my old church with their VBS). On the last night, I brought up a box of field grade points and let each of the kids pick out one arrowhead for them to keep. Once they had all picked out their points, I gave this little talk:

"What makes arrowheads different from all other rocks is this - they don't just happen to be the way they are. They were deliberately made and shaped by their creator for a purpose. Some were for spears, some for arrows, some knives, and some tools. But each one was crafted and shaped for a specific purpose, and made to look like it does for a reason. They show the craftsmanship of their maker. They were created with a function in mind. That is just like you. You didn't just happen. You aren't some random accident of biology. You were each made for a reason, and just as these arrowheads bear the mark of their Maker, so do you. You were created unique, each one of you with a specific purpose in mind, and each of you bear the mark of your Creator."

I thought it was a neat way to give each of them a cool souvenir of their time at VBS, and teach an important lesson in the process.

Very nice job, Indy.  What's the age range of the kids?

Well, you have a bit of a poet in you.  Your corollary is well founded.

Why didnt I have cool teachers?
I did have a cool English teacher in 7th grade-she would smack kids in the head with whatever book we were reading at the time if we were f**king up.
I got smacked hard with Tom Sawyer and Little House in the Big Woods.
The whole Laura Ingels Wilder series got me all lumpy.

That's a great little homily, indianasmith.

Of course, you know I don't agree with it at all, but that's neither here nor there.

I think you must be a great teacher. Reaching kids is tough. You are doing it with aplomb.

a teacher in my step-dad's class at school threw a book at a child that was talking instead of working, and it killed him.  :buggedout:

yep... hard-back book, hit this kid on the head and that was it. don't mean to derail the thread, but I'd forgotten all about this until I read RC's post. my stepdad said he was pretty messed up for a while because it was his friend
