Title: Evil robot child
Post by: giampy on July 21, 2012, 05:03:40 PM
Hi everyone. I would like to ask you for some help because I cannot come up with the title of a movie I saw years ago. Despite my exhaustive tentatives of recalling it, I have not made it through yet.

Well, all I remember is that it was settled in a sort of future world, in which no cities as we mean them nowadays is to be found, humanity lives in sort of caves in deserts and fights against machines, which would like to enter those cave to kill the humans but they cannot. I remember the machines invented a sort of robot child, which was allowed by humans to enter the cave because of his apparently inoffensive aspects . Once inside, he killed all the people there. I recall that the main character first met this child in the desert and they became a sort of friends before he finds out its real nature.

Sorry I cannot give you further details, I was really young at that time and I only remember a couple of images that shocked me the most. Thank you for your help anyway.
Bye

Sounds like "Screamers" (1995).

You are welcome.  It's an interesting film.  I've actually read the story it is based on, but it's been so long I need to revisit it.  Problem is, I cannot remember which collection of short stories it appears in.  I have a lot of collections like that on my shelves.

The original story is "Second Variety" by Philip K. Dick.  I have it in a collection called "Machines That Kill" (from 1984, edited by Fred Saberhagen and Martin Harry Greenberg, ISBN 0-441-51358-1).  The acknowledgments page states:

While I agree that it is an interesting film, I much prefer the original written story.  Of course, for me that's true for just about any movie based on a book or short story.

Philip K. Dick has numerous movies based on his works, including such well known ones as Blade Runner (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083658/), Total Recall (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100802/), and Minority Report (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0181689/).
