Title: BLITZ (2011)
Post by: ulthar on August 10, 2012, 09:04:09 PM
I admit that I am a bit of a Jason Statham fan.  Yeah, he sorta plays the same character in each film, but he fulfills that one major movie watching criterion: he's fun to watch.

BLITZ is the story of a burned out cop (Statham) a la Riggs in the old LETHAL WEAPON movies.  He's tough, brutal and no-nonsense.  And, he's "at war" with his psychiatrist and his boss.  Enter into this mix a serial killer targeting cops, who, upon talking to a tabloid reporter on the phone dubs himself "Blitz."

There's some nuance to this story though...some sort of predictable and some less so.  It's a good fun action flick - a touch more intelligent than most, with some off-beat (and dark) humor by Statham's Brandt.  Brandt is angry and violent and a bit of an anti-hero in a way, but we still root for him.  Some of his antics border on cartoonish-over-the-top, however, and is one of the down sides.  Still, he's not as 'bad' and invincible as some action 'hero's' and thus not as tiresome.

Statham's expression at the end of the train 'stalk' is worth the price of admission (imo) - amused, and clearly violently animalistic.  That's not the end of the movie, so not a spoiler!

While not a GREAT movie, it's worth a look.  The ending tops most Hollywood efforts at ending such a movie.

I go 3.75 out of 5 for this one.  It's good, a lot of fun, does not quite reach into clouds of "great."
