Title: Wow . . .
Post by: indianasmith on August 12, 2012, 04:49:15 PM
looking at Nakuyabi's explosive flameout post, I am left at a loss for words.
I love this forum.  I have no enemies here, just friends I occasionally disagree with.
Why are some people so incapable of rational discussion?  Even though there were a few substantive
issues on which I might find myself in agreement with the departed (A FEW), how could anyone not
even be aware of how outrageous, hateful, and divisive such rhetoric is?

I'm sorry I even started the thread.  I thought we could have an enjoyable and thoughtful discussion,
which is what I love about this place.  Some people make such things impossible.  Too bad.

Indy, sometimes you're naive.  If you feel this is a good forum for friendly, intelligent discussion on myriad topics, how could you repeatedly look the other way when I have been trashed for discussing such in just the manner you describe?  You have seldom come to my defense when I have stood alone, rebuked and reviled... by at least a few... Nakuyabi being just the latest example.

There are some threads I just don't read, but if I sense you are being unfairly piled on, I will come to your defense.  Frankly, I rarely see you needing my help!  You are an excellent debater, and I've alwyas enjoyed our little sparring matches.  Frankly, I thought the place had calmed down a good bit of late, until Naku pulled a nutter.  Anyway, he's gone, we're here, so let's all party!

Evasion is what I would expect from you.  My opinion of you remains unaltered.  If there was someone I would trust most, it would be you.  However, CC has truly risen to the plate, never in my defense, but in a way that I can only describe as admirable.  So, he is the one I most admire.

I can't really see getting that worked up over the by now practically forgotten Chick Fil A affair. something else must be going on

What are you talking about?  Who's worked up?  What are you reading here?  Stop poking.

Isn't that the thread where the guy flipped out and started posting all the disturbing stuff?

Is it reasonable to get all bent out of shape over typed words (lacking nuance) from nearly complete strangers?

Do I post too many rhetorical questions?

BTW, to the Brits, your isles put on a wonderful Olympics.  Thank you.  :)

I'm not the Olympoholic in the family (my wife is), but everything I saw was awesome, including Eric Idle singingin the closing ceremonies tonight!

Eric Idle? Bummer! I missed it.

As for heated discussions,I have been involved in a good many at other forums. I remember over at one in particular a good friend,my sister and I were dog-piled something terrible over the subject of thread drift. Seems that it was a seriously hated thing there and people would really get their knickers in a twist if the discussion even slightly drifted from the main topic. They took it as being uncaring and thoughtless.
Now,I never want to hurt anyone with my words and I realize that everyone has an opinion. But when it comes down to name-calling then it's no longer a debate but a plain old fight. Whether I agree with someone or not I don't want angry feelings to result. I guess I'm a bit like Indy there....that's one thing I love about this site. The ability to discuss without bitterness.

I guess that's what Indy was referring to, but he seems more perplexed than "worked up".  Nakuyabi is apparently gone... banned?  I don't know.  I don't care.

From the wording of his final post, he apparently entered it and then cancelled his membership.  I will not miss him.

hallows- I was saying I couldn't understand why that guy was getting so upset about it, not indy. It was also a bit of whagt is sometimes referred to as hobby horsing, using a arbitrary topic to launch into your thing you want to talk about. like I sometimes do with foreign policy

Wow, I missed that event and glad I did.  What is it about forums that brings out the nutcases anyhow?  I hate that stuff. civility is important to making a case.

I often disagree with some folks here but its not that I don't LIKE y'all as people.  Indy, you are a wise and kindly friend whom I disagree with on political stuff.  Hallows is a good commentator who always contributes (if pedanaticly  :teddyr: ) interesting spins and information, and a laugh.
You are BOTH good fellows in my book, no matter how I agree or disagree with what you say. I'll be off in the less contraversial zones.

Hey, don't be sorry. It wasn't your fault that the thread degenerated into ignorant hate-mongering. It's his.

Yeah, that got really derailed by that guy through his words only.

It's nothing but a bit of good old-fashioned dehumanization. Paranoid dehumanization. You know, that thing that has been responsible for some of the greatest atrocities in human history?

I understand where it comes from, but why spend your life believing you are surrounded by enemies? Sure, there are a lot of people out there who hold different beliefs than you do, but why take that next step into nuttiness to imagine it is a concerted effort by sub-humans designed to damage whatever belief you hold true to your heart?

The answer to that is that some people are just deluded a***oles.

Embrace the contrary nature of the human condition. You might disagree with others, but once you deny them the humanity they hold, you have become worse than anything you argue against.

Do I believe there's an anti- Christian agenda? Yes, I do....however, I don't see the sense in trying to get my point across by yelling, and name-calling, particularly when the thread was designated a a place for friendly discussion.

I've little doubt that Indy would've agreed with some of what the fellow had to say, so why attack Indy?
People like that make me tired.

I've always tried to live by the old adage that you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

Apparently some folks don't know what honey is . . .

He wasn't interested in catching flies, he just wanted to swat at them.

the chic-fil-a thread must have gotten nasty, i expected it to get pretty hot. those are very hard issues to discuss because everyone feels so strongly about them. but  the only problem i saw with that thread was nanahoohoo are whatever his name was.  hes just a youtube troll that got in here somehow, seems like the type of person that would  do something crazy in a movie theatre. no hard feelings from me, i realize some of my comments may have been offensive as well, my apologies. anybody want a granola bar?

What's ironic is conservatives won that whole thing. Chick Fil A had huge sales and a lifetime of free advertising.

People often forget, in their moral outrage, that publicity is publicity. Unless someone really cares about the issue in the same way they do, all they do by raising a stink is make people more aware of the brand. We don't have Chick-fil-A in Canada, and I'd never even heard of it before the controversy. Now, I know their logo, their slogans, their popular menu items, vaguely what areas they serve, and a little bit of their company history.

On the subject of Navakubi (or whatever it was), he just made me cringe, the way he expressed everything in terms of fights and enemies and doing what it takes to win. He's a prime example of the mentality that is hurting everyone, and the USA in particular, these days.

I know I'm as guilty as anyone but sometimes discussing religion and politics, which inevitably seemed tied together these days it seems (I don't really feel they should be but that's another issue) is going to lead to people getting angry and upset and emotional outburts not always based on reason. At least, that's what sometimes seems to happen. I dislike hate whether it being hating on someone for race, religious beliefs or sexual preference. None of that is right. Just plain and simple, living with others requires tolerance or else we go backwards instead of forward.
