Title: 60s/70s film about woman going mad....desperate to find out what it was

I saw this back in 2007/08 at the Guild Cinema in Albuquerque, it was excellent but I can't remember the name, I've tried google searching, this might be my last attempt to find it online.

It was a 60s/70s film and starts off in a (blonde?)woman's pretty posh apartment, i think she's a writer, she receives a phonecall from her husband (i think) about going away to a little cottage, to help her clear her head, the phonecall stands out as being quite a shock, like the ringing was extra loud or camera focused on it for an abnormally long time. She heads to said cottage in the countryside somewhere (i think the film is American but i remember the countryside looking British so I could be wrong).
Skip ahead to later in the film, her husband joins her but I think she has strange feelings of jealousy or paranoia and ends up stabbing him, only for him to mysteriously appear alive again a little while later. It's a very creepy scene because it seems like he might be toying with her, his facial expressions seemed to indicate that he knew his reappearance was odd, i think another man was there also.

Sorry if this is vague, I only remember parts/the atmosphere of the film. I think the cottage was somewhere she used to go as a child, if that helps. Her childhood dog appears there I think, maybe near a waterfall in one scene.
Also, in one definately memorable scene she looks up at a cliff (i think where a car crash took/takes place at some point) to see herself looking down at her. I don't remember the films conclusion either, sorry.
It would be fantastic if any of you could tell me from that (admittedly limited information) what it was. I believe it was made by a fairly well respected director mainly because I think it was part of a day-long showing of his various films. I thought about contacting the cinema but let's face it, I could only say what I've said here and that it showed either late 2007/early 2008 and that I believe it was from the 60s/70s.

FWIW, this is 100% Robert Altman's IMAGES:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Images_(film)

Female lead descends into madness, travels with husband to vacation home, many distorted shots and sound FX, she does eventually murder (or hallucinates that she murders) the husband, drives around a picturesque landscape trying to hide his body, there's a dog and there's water (maybe a waterfall, been a while), and she does look off in the distance and see herself on at least one occasion. The director was well-respected (I think most of his films are crap and this one is disappointing after a decent start, but what do I know) and I imagine there have been many day-long retrospectives of his work.......
