Title: Blue Monkey (1987)
Post by: Kaseykockroach on October 21, 2012, 11:33:23 PM
Anyone seen this rarity? I've been curious about this one, even if I'm not curious enough to actually bother to go and seek out a copy so it'd be one less tally on my unofficial quest to see every single 70's and 80's monster movie ever made.

(This is the only clip of the movie I've ever seen)

I enjoyed it, though I haven't seen it in years (not since they showed it during a killer bug movie marathon on Sci-Fi).  I wouldn't say it's brilliant or anything, but if they released it on DVD or Blu Ray, I'd probably pee a little.

I would like to see a DVD release of this movie.  If memory serves, a patient chokes up a huge grub that grows into something that looks and acts like the cross between a fly, a praying mantis, and a girl on a trampoline.  They defeat it with a huge laser that has inexplicably been installed at the psychiatric facility where part of the movie takes place.

Been years since I last watched this, though I do have the VHS in my collection.

Same here.  The one thing I remember about watching it was trying to figure out why it was called Blue Monkey when it was about a giant praying mantis.

I wondered that, too.  I think the only reference they make to the title is a line from one of the kids:

"I'll bet [the monster] is a big blue monkey!"

Yeah, I remember liking this as a kid basically because it had a giant praying mantis eating people (an easy sell for me back then).  Really, I'd still like it, but the creature isn't seen for waaaay too long and there isn't enough creature action.

It's still worth a watch for 80s horror fans though.  Some creepy moments, and the effects work is pretty solid.

I've been wanting to see this for a long time.

Hoping it pops up on Youtube (even just clips of the monster) someday, as I'm not desperate enough to seek out the VHS tape and transfer it. Though if anyone wants to give/trade me a copy, I wouldn't mind. :D
For the record, also hoping to see Ticks (1993) someday.

Leonard Maltin's video guide says that this film was originally named Green Monkey.
