Title: Rate the Bond films
Post by: Zapranoth on November 10, 2012, 12:45:38 AM
This may be a retread of a thread long gone, I'm not sure.   Just watched Skyfall tonight (I so seldom get out to movie theaters anymore!) -- got me to thinking of the 70's and 80's.  Which of them are your favorites, and why?

I'll admit, for me as a child of the 70's and 80's, I grew up watching Roger Moore as Bond... some reject him, too squidgy and tongue in cheek, and I can respect that.  But probably The Spy Who Loved Me was my first (and then I went back and saw the earlier ones later on).  Yeah, Jaws, baby.  Jaws.

I never held with Timothy Dalton as Bond.  Euchh...

Brosnan?  Passable.

Connery?  Awesome.  I'd have to say that the fight scenes in the earlier Bond movies with Connery were some of the most brutal and visceral scenes of that sort.

I miss the gadgetry of the 80's movies, and since I was a teenaged guy in those years, well, I'm going to pick those era films as my favorites -- what am I gonna say?  Lots of mostly naked girls during formative years I guess.

I find Daniel Craig to be an excellent face of the franchise, now.  Tormented-appearing and grim, yet with a certain humanity to him.  Enjoyed Skyfall quite a lot, very well done indeed.

I grew up with Roger Moore as "my Bond".  Love pretty much all his movies except for A View To A Kill, which was okay I guess but kind of cheesy.  But Live And Let Die, The Man With The Golden Gun, The Spy Who loved Me, Moonraker, For Your Eyes Only and Octop***y are all huge favorites of mine.

I also thought Lazenby was great in his one movie.  Diana Rigg was really something too

Connery, as much as I appreciate what he brought to the role, well those movies are good but not my favorites.  From Russia With Love and You Only Live Twice are my favorites.

Timothy Dalton - I really liked License To Kill but The Living Daylights kind of fell short for me.  It had some great parts but I dunno, Maryam d'Abo's such a dingbat it kind of wore on me.

Brosnan - Goldeneye was good.  Judi Dench kind of ruined all those movies for me.  Some cast iron b**** that treats Bond like a junior agent, and not like the guy who's saved the entire world multiple times.  WTF?  Tomorrow Never Dies was "good", The World Is Not Enough was "good" with some unintentional comedy relief from Denise Richards, and Die Another Day really marked the series' departure from spy drama to all-out CGI super hero crapfest.

Daniel Craig - ugh.  Saw Quantum of Solace and couldn't even tell what the hell was going on, it was all edited together like some god awful music video.  I'm 100% done with the franchise now and would much rather watch the old ones again than care about what they're doing next.

Connery was the best Bond, and I think ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE would have been the best Bond movie if Connery had been in it.  Lazenby was probably the third best Bond, after Connery and Craig.  I'd pt Brosnan fourth, Moore fifth (after LIVE AND LET DIE and MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN, his portrayal of Bond got sillier and sillier), and finally Dalton, who I thought was sort of dull.

My 5 favorite Bonds are (please note, I have not seen SKYFALL yet, but I pan to see it today):

1. GOLDFINGER
2. FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
3. ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE
4. CASINO ROYALE
5. DR. NO

My 5 least favorite Bonds are:

1. OCTOp***y
2. A VIEW TO A KILL
3. DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER
4. THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS
5. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE

To me,the best Bond will always be Sean Connery. In fact,IMHO,"Goldfinger" is the apex of Bond films. Next would be Roger Moore....he was a bit campier but still had some of Sean's grit..my favorite of his was "Live and Let Die". Next would be Pierce Brosnan....he seemed a combo of Sean and Moore but edgier than Moore. I liked him quite a lot and his best was,IMO,"Golden Eye". Poor Timothy Dalton I think could have been a much better Bond but he was a victim of inadequate material....they appeared to feel Bond needed to be a bit more PC and that's just NOT Bond! I haven't seen a single one with Daniel Craig....as Bond I find him harsh and unlikeable.

Update:  I saw SKYFALL yesterday and it's hovering around #5 on my top 5 list, running neck-and-neck with DR. NO.

David Niven is the only Bond I ever liked.

I've seen all the Connery and Moore films, and the George Lazenby (who I hated).
I coudn't watch the Brosan ones without thinking of REMINGTON STEELE,and Dalton-well-no charisma.
I've only seen Craig in CASINO ROYALE-and I thought he was quite good!

But-Connery is my favorite-DR.NO and GOLDFINGER the best of them.
Moore second-love the humor! LIVE AND LET DIE and -yes-MOONRAKER.

Love this scene from MOONRAKER!

1. The Spy Who Loved Me
2. Octop***y
3. From Russia with Love
4. For Your Eyes Only
5. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
6. Goldfinger
7. The World is Not Enough
8. Diamonds are Forever
9. Licence to Kill
10. Live and Let Die
11. Dr. No
12. Goldeneye
13. Moonraker
14. Thunderball
15. You Only Live Twice
16. Tomorrow Never Dies
17. The Man with the Golden Gun - waste of cool locations and a great villain in Christopher Lee/Scaramanga
18. The Living Daylights - although it's one of the most Fleming-esque I feel, Dalton was not right in the role, and all the 80s devices were kind of jarring
19. Die Another Day
20. A View to a Kill
21. Casino Royale

"Royale" was such a disappointment for me, I haven't gotten around to seeing the latest.
