Title: Skyfall
Post by: Jim H on November 12, 2012, 07:16:04 PM
Skyfall is a good film and a LOT better than Quantum of Solace.  Many will also be shocked that Bond actually gets some characterization and development here.  Action is not as good as Casino Royale, but still solid.  Tons of nods to older Bond films (I'd like to see a compounded list).

Also, the film is staggeringly gorgeous, not just the best looking Bond film ever but possibly the best looking film of the year.

It's too long and I think the villain, while fantastically acted by Bardeem, was not enough of a threat.  But still a very solid film.  Judi Dench is also terrific, as is Craig, and both get genuine meat to their roles.

8/10.

I also enjoyed this movie.  I though Javier Bardem was the best Bond villain in many years.  Overall, the movie was very slick, smooth, and suspenseful and had plenty of surprises for Bond fans.

I'm really looking forward to this as the Daniel Craig era has totally changed James Bond and brought it kicking and screaming into the 21st century.  If Casino Royale had kept up the pace of its first half it would have been the best James Bond movie ever. Quantum of Solace wasn't as good, but better on subsequent viewings.  Only one more week before the Australian release!!!

After this has been out for almost a month, I finally got time to see it on Christmas Eve. So what was good about it . . .

Daniel Craig's acting.
Good. Probably the best actor next to Sean Connery to play Bond
The next M
Good.
The next Q
Good.
The next Moneypenny
Good.
Albert Finney.
Good. He could teach these young actors today something about acting.

With so much that I thought was good, why did I not enjoy it.

The Bond Girl
Poor.
The Bond Villain
Poor. For this role, the overrated and overacting performance of Javier Bardem.
The Storytelling.
Poor. Too many climaxes. The villain's plot, which are normally big, was not worthy of a Bond film.
The Action
Poor. Some poster on another board said how impressed he was by the--at least some of the--realism of the action. Which may mean why I what unimpressed by it. Even in the films I like, I have never been impressed by the action. With one exception.

The 1967 version of "Casino Royale." Look to your right and William Holden ia kicking the crap out of a bunch of villains. Look up and it is the French Foreign Legion parachuting to the rescue. Look down and it is a tribe of Native Americans doing a wardance. Look left and it is Geroge Raft, who says: "I think I accidentally shot my self." And then drops dead. And look in the background, and here comes David Prowse as Frankenstein's Creature. Except for all the ensuing confusion, unrealistic as heck, but alot of fun that I enjoyed watching.

Which is why I think I did not enjoy this one. It asled me to take Bond seriously, and I have never been able to take him seriously. For me he is a fantasy character not a  character to take serious . And to ask me to take him serious is to suck all the fun out of the film.

Will I ever have fun watching another Bond film? Who knows. But there is suppose to be another one coming. Even though rumour has it, this is Craig's thrid and last film as Bond.

But I know what will be fun. After how disappointing I felt this year was, next year looks to be a fun year for films.

Original films
Animated. Epic
Live action. Hansel and Gretel: Witchhunters
Prequels. Oz: the Great and Powerful.
Sequels. The Muppets 2.
Remakes.
Known. The Looone Raaanger.
Unknown. Jack, the Giant Killer. The original fillm was one of the most obscure, but best, fantasy films from the '60's.

So, here's to a better film year next year than this year.

Seemed a bit Bond-Lite to me. The sex and violence felt toned down. If you think about it, M was kind of one of the Bond Girls, which is distrubing. Lil Super-Hacker Q? Well I guess. Maybe there can be a scene in the next film where Bond takes him out and teaches him how to pick up women.

Then there's the whole thing about Bond being too old for the job when he was a fresh faced youg 00 just a movie or two ago.

The biggest crime of all though was blowing up the Astin. For shame!

Everything fit for me, even though it's hugely different from the older ones in my opinion. Craig was good, Bardem was fantastic, the whole Home Alone-Element at the Skyfall ranch was great and it had one of the best Bond Songs ever.

All in all, I thought Skyfall was a pretty good Bond film.

I liked how the gadgets were toned down, as in Bond being given a Walther and just a mini radio, none of the super duper spy stuff as in a Roger Moore Bond movie.

Also the Aston Martin, First M pokes fun at and then they blow it up.

Personal belife,Skyfall was as good as Diamonds are Forever.

but then, that's just me
