Title: Video Game(s) you hold close to your heart
Post by: El Misfit on December 21, 2012, 09:13:52 PM
Okay, there are good video games, and then there's the ones where you love that you hold dearly to your heart. What are they, Don't be shy now.

Here's mine:

These two were the first video games that I owned on a console.

MORROWIND introduced me to the wonderful world of the Elder Scrolls. I still play it sometimes.

Exciting Hour (AKA Mat Mania). When I was in high school, a little sandwich shop in my hometown had one in the back. I have fond memories of walking downtown with a friend or two after dinner on a school night, and dropping a bunch of quarters into that thing. Some nights, there'd be a bunch of guys there (the store finally imposed a limit of six) and the quarters would be lined up. They had a couple of other games I enjoyed, but this was my favourite, and it's still the only wrestling/fighting game I've really enjoyed. Nice balance of simple gameplay and simple controls (two buttons and a stick) with lots of cool moves you could do. Also a fun anime style, with humorous audience members and some "Engrish" that made me smile. When I started playing around with MAME a few years back, this was the first game I tried, and I still had all the moves down, 20 years after I last played it. As soon as that music started, it was like I was transported back to 1985. Big nostalgia trip.

Time Pilot '84 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_Pilot_%2784).

I grew up in Juneau, Alaska, and while there were several attempts at real arcades, it never really happened. This game was one of the few machines down at the one of two cinemas in my town. I played the hell out of it. I still think it's a fantastic game.

The other? The Lord of the Rings Pinball machine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lord_of_the_Rings_%28pinball%29). One thing about me, I love pinball. Let me amend that with capital letters, I LOVE pinball. I know it's a dying art, but when I was attending ASU, they had the this machine in their fairly p**s-poor arcade. I played quite a lot of it, and I got very good at it. So much so that is one of the few pinball machines I almost managed to beat at it's mini-games.

If I ever had $5000 of truly disposable income, I would make this machine a center-point of my house. I can still track the ball-projectories in my mind. (Sadly, pinball machines are very hard to upkeep, and I never got to go back and reap my victory.)

Pac-Man (Atari 2600) It's not the best version of the game, in fact it's probably the worst. Still, it was the first game I played at home.

Not a big video game guy anymore but a couple stand out as all time favorites.

Doom-Spent a lot of my childhood playing this game. I haven't played in a few years but I can still recall some of that awesome music.

Earthbound-I used to rent this over and over again in my snes days. I never even get that far in this game but I remember being entranced by the plot, music and characters of this game.

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas-The only video game I still regularly play, it pretty much never leaves my ps2. The rest of the series is great but for me this is the best video game of all time. I've beat all the missions countless times but have just as much fun doing the side things and just driving around. I tried GTA4 and despite it's clear graphical superiority it just never felt nearly as fun to me.

Xevious
Frogger
Duck Hunt - first at-home game I played
Super Mario 3
Mario Kart
Star Wars Force Unleashed - not nostalgic obviously, but I love it because you just tear sh*t up.  My favorite blowing-off-stress game.

Avengers (4 player Arcade) "Why should it Goes well?"
Discsof Tron (stand inside arcade game)

During the 90's there was a glut of fighting games released in the wake of Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat.  Some managed to carve out their own niche and become legit franchises in their own right, some became cult classics, but most became one shot quick money grabs.  There is one game of that time I hold close to my heart.

Primal Rage.  What's awesome about this game?  More like what wasn't awesome. Rather then humans, you played as giant apes and dinosaurs.  The characters where created using stop-motion. So it was like playing King Kong vs Gwangi. You could restore health by eating human worshipers. And best of all-this was the only fighting game we ever owned where I could constantly defeat my older brother.

This game seems to exist in a place between main stream and cult classic. I know people who knew about it. Plenty didn't like it-but it was popular enough to spawn toys and (as far as I know)one issue comic book. A sequel got to beta testing, but wasn't released.  Sadly this game was a  victim of the over reaction censor ship that soon followed Mortal Kombat's release.  I really want a reboot of this franchise.

I gotta' say that one game that I really liked back in the day was Splatterhouse 2. One of the parts Iliked was just for the music alone.

This is Level 3-The River Of Death. The music track was a big fave of mine. Listen to the music as our hero is crossing the river.

My all-time fave has to be Dig Dug.  It now sits in my living room, unfortunately not currently working.
Mr. Do, which is similar, I also liked a lot.
Crazy Climber was another one I played a lot back in the day and have fond memories of going to Malibu Gran Prix pretty often to play that one.

For home systems, I still love Starflight for the Genesis, Night Trap, Lunar and Road Avenger for the Sega CD, Wild Arms and Castlevania SOTN for the Playstation and Resident Evil 4 for Playstation 2.

There was a game before Night Trap that was way more controversial, and it's name was Chiller.  The game was banned and apparently the censors had a problem with a light-gun game that involved a torture dungeon. D6ZRfMp4yKM

Hear, hear!

I played Chiller when I was at Funspot (Wiers beach, NH) and found that it was, aside form being delightfully twisted, also one of the many shooter games that was from Exidy. Exidy also made Crossbow, Cheyenne, and a few other minor shooters that didn't really take the spotlight.

They did, however, make the absolutely fun treasure-hunting hitVenture, that was easily the best game about a smiling bouncy ball armed with a bow and arrow  :bouncegiggle:

Well what a' ya know? I had that for my C64 too! I also had Project:Stealth Fighter, Gunship, and Arctic Fox to name a few. I remember those long days when it took like X-amount of hours for the game to load and having the C-64 as hot as a firecracker at the end of the gaming session. To be fair, however, some of the sessions lasted way longer than they should have  :bouncegiggle:

Probably

Sword of the Samurai by Microprose.  It is a simple strategy game set in Japan.  You must become Shogun through many different ways combat, blackmail, or just being the best.  Well, technically combat and conquest is the only way but first you must become Daimyo and there are many ways to reach that goal.

Smash TV - there is something about the mindless carnage and running and gunning with prizes that is just attractive to it and I have to play every once in awhile.

Morrowind calls me back alot there is something about the setting that sucks me in all the time.

Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest I feel compelled to play at times.

Morrowind had a very strange, somewhat oppressive feeling to it, that I thnk ties into the somewhat hars and uninhabitable landscape it represented.  It gets mentioned a lot in Skyrim, as a matter of fact.

Two such references to the aftermath are Red Mountain, such as the Dunmer fleeing Morrowind and the mention of Vivec and Balmora lying in ruin.

Also, there is a man in Dawnstar who collects Mythic Dawn artifacts, and this runs into Oblivion territiry, as they mention that the Oblivion crisis took place 250 years before Skyrim.

Point being, there's lots of great tie-ins and references to the past that always remind you that no single Elder Scrolls game is a stand-alone, but part of the series, as well it should be.

Another game I was crazy about (and still like):
WRECKING CREW (NES)
What a deep, fun game!  You play as Mario (yes, THAT Mario), demolishing walls/ladders/doors on a construction site, with killer wrenches and eggplant men on your tail.  You can create your own levels, uncover hidden extra lives, and try to discover the great "Golden Hammer" which makes you more powerful.  An absolute blast!

Looking back on the NES games, I recently have come to appreciate how hard some of them were, as most of them were platform games that required you to move just right, or get knocked off the precipice by either missing the jump.

And then, there was the fear of overjumping and having the enemy waiting for you to knock you out of mid-air before you landed.  And then there wasNinja Gaiden....that one nearly sent many of us to the happy bin with it's insurmountable obstacles  :buggedout:

OH yes.  Those damn eagles!  You could fiddle with the sprite scrolling and move back and forth a little bit to the point where they appear on screen, and make it so they don't appear.  Hard to get it down to a science though.  I used to play this one and Ninja Gaiden II with a Slo-Mo pause button controller; man that helped!

That was always what I wanted from the get-go!     Hopefully the 10-or-so years that have gone by will see some better graphics on par with Skyrim, with just a touch of the old look to remind you of what came before.

Imagine going back to Balmora or Vivec and seeing it in ruins,  maybe inhabited by the remaining Ordinator and High Ordinator guys who have started their own rogue order.

Or maybe exploring Red Mountain post-eruption and finding new ruins or re-visiting that area where the energy fence kept out the Corprus monsters.

Also,  as a result of the changes in Morrowind since Red Mountain, have some of the monster evolve..maybe Cliff Racers have front legs now as well,  and Kagouti now have longer tails to counter balance their bodies.  Lots of possibilities!

For me, I kind of like the talk of the aftermath.  I'm also enjoying Skyrim in the idea of the Empire on the brink of a possible collapse.  It gives a very real feeling to the overall story of Tamriel (well Nirn technically) that things change over time and not all things stay the same.

Going back on Morrowind, one of the things that has always drawn me into the game is the variance in the people and cities in Morrowind.  It gives a feeling of being real.  Dunmer from one section aren't the same as those from another.  The Imperial structures and forts are very different in comparison to the native architecture.  Of course, there is also some game play mechanics that came standard I miss (Mark and Recall for instance).

I enjoyed both Oblivion and Skyrim but Morrowind just seems the best out of those last three.  There is something that I can't let go of and Morriwnd is the one I long to play all the time.

Two really old school games I still love are Lode Runner (possibly my favorite of all time) and Boulder Dash. I spent hours playing these on my Apple ][e.

In the arcade, Mappy caught my heart.

On the NES, the Zelda games hold my highest affection.

I also loved DOOM, mostly because I could enter God Mode and take out my frustrations by punching monsters to death.

Totally agree!
There was a big difference in architiecture of Imperial and native Dunmer buildings, and in some cases, the Dunmer architecture was so primitice it was almost next to the Flintstones in design. lol

I'd say that a full return to what's left of Morrowind, (with more monster types to suggest some sort of evolution) would be a good idea. Red Mountain can be an entire adventure in itself.
And I'd say too that a return to the Imperial city in Oblivion would be cool, as well as perhaps a return to some of the already crumbled Ayleid ruins.

These areas would present challeneges as well as maybe nice places for bandits to hide. Only thing with this time, there should be a "random re-population" of the areas once they are cleared, and not just the same old creatures\NPC'S. That made Oblivion a bit boring at times.

Combat for Atari 2600.   My older brother and I would spend hours playing ping pong tanks amongst the other games.   Keep all the modern day warfare games, this is where its at.  I feel this way about most Atari Games.

Doom, Hexen, Duke Nukem, Shadow Warrior, Wolfenstein, etc for the computer brings back fond memories of death matching my buddy over a modem connection.   That or just wasting time on my own blasting aliens, zombies and demons.

GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas.   I'd lose myself in those games for hours and still do to the point of the outside world shutting off.

Mike Tyson's Punch Out or any Punch Out series to be honest.   I really think I've spent the most time playing these than any game series.

I'll add in several 90's arcade games like Mortal Kombat 2, Killer Instinct, Virtua Figther 2, Daytona USA, Cruisin' USA, etc.   Brings me back to a time when I had expendable income.

One of the NES's resounding successes. Still a technical marvel in my book. This came out very early in the NES's lifespan, and it looked like nothing else on that system. I'm sure the simplified gameplay let them go crazy with the art, but it's still a highwater mark.

It's something I still feel good about. Mike Tyson's Punch-Out has become well known for its difficulty. To this day there are still people complaining about how damn hard the game is. Well guess what, losers? I beat the game when I was ten. Repeatedly. Suck it up and learn to play video games.

Finally got all three, finished 3 and SA, working on Vice City. 3 is better in terms of the character not whining (Carl doesn't really stand up to Sweet in SA) and just about everyone in Vice City is an a***ole.

Indeed, the best way to learn these old games is like we did, thru repetition. Practice made perfect, in some cases anyhow.  And looking back on Mike Tyson's Punch Out, you're indeed right..didn't look like anyhting they put out up to that time. if I remember right, you had to wait until Mike winked at you and then let him have one in the kisser.  And I remember Mike congratulating you when you beat him too, saying how tough you were and all that.

One thing I never liked about any game with a password though..sometimes when you wrote it down, you mistook an "a" for an "@" or put down an "s" instead of a "5" and then all night you'd be going crazy trying to figure it out. Anyone here remember doing that?   :buggedout:

The ball guy was just called Blue Lander; there was also a Red Lander.  They sold you weapons and power-ups.  They were also icons for money ("chips") and energy meter boosters, I believe.
There is a dragon-like boss in one of the flying stages.
Out of boredom I once made a drawing of the heroine walking a pet Blue Lander:

YES!! I loved this game!  There was a BK on with this game that was on my way home from school and I used to go there everyday to play this game!  One of the fun things about this was on the beach level when after you got a combo the humans would run out and worship you. If you hit one in the air and the other player hit him back after a few times a volley ball net would appear and you could play volleyball using a human as a ball. Awesome game!

I seem to remember Guardian Legend...didn't it have some little round ball-like guy named Randar in it?  I also remember fighting a dragon too. This off the top of my head, if I remember right

Man, that's a great drawing, retrorussell! Wish I could draw like that. I have tons of monster designs in my head that never quite made it to pen and paper. Imagination's a great thing

Maniac Mansion on C64.    I loved wasting time with that game.   Plus it was cool different characters were good for different things.  Benard the nerd was the best.

I played this on my Apple ][e and loved it! Good memories...

More recently, and also from LucasArts, I loved the Monkey Island series.

RBI Baseball, Bases Loaded, Double Dribble, Tecmo Bowl for NES (amongst other sports titles) - my neighbor and I used to burn hours playing NES games like these and many others.  Lot of fun trash talking too.

Soooo many...

In hours spent, Nethack wins for me.

I loved Mat Mania too.  Once you learned to run and then immediately shoulder block, "Coco Savege" was not so tough.

I grew up in the golden age of arcades, so I played nearly everything..

Mutant Fighter.  (Anyone else?  " I'll taste your BLOOD!!!")

Discs of Tron.  Gorf.  Pengo.  Xevious.  Xaxxon.  Mousetrap.  Donkey Kong and its variants.  Joust 1 and 2.  Major Havoc!  Rastan (I was the only guy in my arcade who could win that). Bubble Bobble (a friend of mine and I could win that on one credit each)

Yie ar Kung fu!
Dragons lair!
Golden axe!
Renegade!
Sf 2 and its variants!
Paperboy!

And let us not forget un squadron and forgotten worlds.

Games I loved but were very hard:  defender (that game takes skill).  Ghouls n ghosts (very hard!).  Qix if difficulty setting high.

On the PC:  nethack of course, Starcraft, pathways into darkness, and Marathon !!!!!

And if you ever saw someone really, really good at Robotron 2084... That was an arcade hero.

I loved "Combat" on the old Atari. Pick tank battle, turn on bouncy walls, and just have fun.

Minecraft.

I'm sick, I have it on my phone and on my PC.  I start out planning to do something simple, hours later I realize I haven't even finished what I started because I got distracted with other things.  It's a black hole where my time goes.

glad I'm not as addicted as you are! :tongueout: jk, but then again, I'm not sure if you have the time to make a 93.6 million block space ship.

I almost forgot about that one, Andrew. I also remember with the air combat mode you could have 3 planes against one or something like that..you could do it with the tanks too. There was so much you could do with that game.

There were 27 different games in Combat, and yeah, there was one game with three mini-planes taking on a GIANT biplane.  I also remember there was a way to fiddle with your tank in a corner and warp to the opposite corner of the screen.
Combat had a lot of variations, but Space Invaders had 112!!!
