Title: Are you a Geek?
Post by: RCMerchant on December 28, 2012, 05:52:10 AM
 A freind of mine called me a geek. Because I have tons of horror films-OLD horror films-I collect monster mags,have a stand up plastic Dracula in my living room,that kinda thing. Im a geek. I have Lugosi posters on my living room wall. Mykids are used to it...but other folks...like my nurse-((I have a nurse until my heart works-it works fine-what s**t) think Im weird. Are you a geek? Do You feel outside of others because of your love for movies or comic books? I know I do.
Oh-Ill never change-I like what I like-I have a strong passion for it-I couldnt change if I wante to-I LOVE old horror films,Jack Kirby comics,and Creepy Magazine of old.  I play jazz and punk rock real loud. They think Im weird-they like me-but dont socialize ( did I spell that right...I dont think so....) with me-Im a weirdo.I Dont care if folks think Im weird. OK with me.

I don't think you'll find many NON-geeks here. That's part of what draws us to this site: a seemingly unnatural love of movies that most people don't understand (this applies both to the movies and to our love of them). I personally don't feel like I have ever fit in anywhere because, like you, I like what I like and I won't change that to please others. There are very few people I have ever really "clicked" with, and I haven't found a group that I truly feel a part of ever (and I'm nearly 50). People like me (and many on this board, in different ways) don't fit with groups because 1.) We are often loners/introverts, 2.) Socializing is not our strong point, 3.) We have peculiar tastes that are often so specific that we know no one who shares them, and 4.) We're not willing to change those tastes or our passion for our peculiarities.

"Normal ain't nothing but a setting on the dryer!" :cheers:

I'm a geek because I am 48 years old and I:

* Watch, read about, discuss, and love bad movies
* Read comic books
* Play board games
* Am a CPA

However, I try not to act like a geek.  You would never mistake me from one of the guys on THE BIG BANG THEORY.  I'm more of a freewheeling spirit, like Charlie Sheen on TWO AND A HALF MEN (minus all the hot babes . . .)

Well, I bite the heads off live chickens for money, so I guess so.

Real answer? I'm way too geeky for the real world, and not nearly geeky enough for this place. I don't fit in anywhere!

I've been called a geek on occasion due to my unusual ( :lookingup:) cultural tastes, but I never really thought of myself as one because I don't like math or science.
I'm the person who sits in the farthest corner of the back row and doesn't want to make eye contact with anyone.  Whatever the word for that is.

Unless I smell bad, people refuse to tell me what they think of me....

On the other hand, for years before I discovered BadMovies.org, I was convinced that I was the only, and I mean THE ONLY person who liked Mad Max...
And people wouldn't even tell me why they hated it, they just thought it was wrong of me to like it...........

Definitely have been called a geek. Yes, it has isolated me especially during my high school years which were awful for me. I was bullied and picked on because I was different, knew a lot about stuff most people don't care about like pro wrestling, comic books, old sci-fi & horror movies and TV shows. Once my bullies tried to humiliate me by wishing "Happy Birthday to 'The Gee'" in the local paper...I thought it was ridiculous to say the word without the K. In many ways, I've come to embrace it as I got older. I like what I like and the hell with what anyone else thinks. Fortunately the Internet allowed me to find many more people who shared a similar love for things than I ever would have thought possible before I discovered it. So grateful for badmovies.org and its ilk.  :thumbup:

I'm more apt to call myself a geek before someone else because to me its a badge of honor.  I walk through a place like IKEA and wonder why the hell do people decorate their house so boringly.   :question:

Notice now "geek culture" is now cool with the masses?  Zombies, Werewolves, Vampires...heh, these youngsters have a lot to learn.

I've been called a geek for numerous reasons.

1.I was in band

2.I have been really into role-playing games...not those computer ones but the ones that require dice

3.I actually enjoy elevator music and Lawrence Welk

4.I love Harry Potter,Lord of the Rings,Star Trek and Star Wars

5. I enjoy both Marvel and DC comics

6. I adore bad movies....the older the better...actually,my daughter thinks my love of "The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra" automatically qualifies me :teddyr:

I prefer to think of myself as "socially handicapped"   :twirl:

I never played D&D when I was younger but I'm kind of into it now.  I also love Munchkins but that's sort of a spoof game; the serious RPG-ers would probably hassle me for it.
 :cheers:

Hahaha I used to love Lawrence Welk  (I watched  a lot of PBS as a child).  Bobby's teeth were disturbing.

LOL...I actually thought Bobby had a few more teeth than normal. As for role-playing,I haven't done it in years but really liked it. I played D&D,Star Wars,Champions,Middle Earth,Top Secret and some others.

You know, I tried to quantify what people think is cool a few years ago, at least in America. And you know what I decided? It was nothing more than sex and money. The "cool" people were just those who had money and were worried about who they would have sex with next. That's "cool" in American society.

Those people are incredibly boring individuals. Nothing of merit will ever arise for those gifted douchebags. They'll just keep f**king themselves. (Not that I'm saying that isn't great. Sign me on.)

I do find it amusing that the ascendancy of the geek has found it's way into polite society. I lived through the years when being smart was a stigma. Now, everybody is chomping at the bit to be the smart guy.

At the same time, I was the smart kid, and I wish somebody would have taught me basic shop class. Oh, I've got an imagination, but I'd rather know how to work a smart-saw.

I'm a geek for sure, but those jocks learned real-world skills I would kill for.

Does that whole geek thing really mean anything once you're out of high school?  Seems like everybody I know is a geek.  Of course working in an accounting office probably doesn't help matters much.  But some of those people in purchasing are actually geekier than we are  :teddyr:

But yeah, I'm 48 and play video games every night, I'm going to build my own gaming PC, I've got 500+ DVD's - all of them bad - and I may know a thing or too about Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5, Space 1999, UFO, etc.  But that stuff just makes me cool  :tongueout:

 :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle:  No doubt.  I married a systems analyst.   IT professionals will give accountants a run for the geek title!

Couldn't pass this thread up.

I go to a therapist (mental health type), and she is very focused on my life being outside the norm. She asked me if it bothers me to be outside the mainstream. I responded, "Do you find the postings of your 200 plus 'friends' on Facebook to be important? Do you read each and every one of them?" No, she told me. "Do you keep up with who won 'Dancing With The Stars' or 'American Idol'?" Well, no. "Do you really give a flip about Honey Boo-Boo and her family?" No, she said, but what does that have to do with anything?

That is "mainstream"! If I'm a geek for not being interested in that crap, then for the love of all creation, I AM A GEEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She thought about my comments and then admited, "I guess that makes me outside the mainstream as well. Wow."

Now, being non-social and avoiding contact with humanity, those are completely different issues...and I'm still working on those.
