Title: Not such a happy Christmas in Arkansas.
Post by: trekgeezer on December 31, 2012, 03:51:37 PM
It started around 3PM on the 25th, we got clobbered a rapid accumulation of snow, then cam e the sleet and freezing rain.  The storm took out the power for 196, 000 homes , a pretty big deal for a state with only 2.5 million residents.

We never use our fireplace, except for this kind of emergency. Luckily I had some wood, but it was really old and some of it was really wet

Our home is all electric, so we were stuck with no heat and no lights, and got our news from the radio.   My wife did a great job making our  meals using the the side burner on out gas BBQ grill . , by Friday we were  getting very low on wood.  We were getting ready to got  to my Daughter's in-laws house .

we had seen several power trucks come ,and my wife made the comment that we should pray , and damned if the lights didn't come on that very second, I yelled Ya hoo! and the hugging began.    a hot shower sure can comfort a weary soul.

Having had 10 days without power and another night this past week, I can relate.  I'm so glad for you that the power is back on.   We are all very fortunate.

Yup: winter camping IN the house - not fun.  Glad it is behind you and everyone came through alright.  Enjoy that hot water!

eta: Props to Mrs. Geezer for her adaptability in a crisis.

Sorry you had such a rough time, but it is good to hear you pushed through and made things work until the power came back on.  Happy New Year, may your power never go out during 2013.

It's amazing how a power outage can make you appreciate the things we have all come to take for granted.  Living in Massachusetts, I am no stranger to how bad weather can mess you up for a few days.  Glad to hear everything worked out for you!

As one who was in an an area somewhat affected by hurricane Sandy, I can relate to the situation of ot having power and cooking with gas.

While our power came back the next day, we had to light the gas stove with matches, but the hot water heater was good due to it's internal back-up.

As with Trekgeezer's situation, (though 2 diiferent experiences) I think he and I can safely say there's a LOT to be said for cooking with gas!
