Title: Favorite David Lynch Movie?
Post by: Rev. Powell on January 11, 2013, 02:41:15 PM
David Lynch probably defines the phrase "not for everyone," but he does have a surprisingly big following given his occasional impenetrability. Now that his career looks like it's probably complete with 10 feature films (I've seen all of them except THE STRAIGHT STORY), I'm curious as to what other people think his best work is. I have my guesses about which movie will win the popular vote but feel free to surprise me.

For me, I rank the best as ERASERHEAD, BLUE VELVET, MULHOLLAND DRIVE... with DUNE bringing up the rear.

Haven't seen them all, much to my lazy dismay but Blue Velvet is right up there

I think THE ELEPHANT MAN may be his most accessible, and very strong.  THE STRAIGHT STORY, though not for everyone, is wonderful.

It's a toss up between ERASERHEAD and BLUE VELVET.  I voted for ERASERHEAD.  I've seen INLAND EMPIRE once and I suspect that after I watch it 2 or 3 more times, it may end up being in the top 2 or 3.

I just loved WILD AT HEART because it was SO bizarre and weird . . .

I voted for Blue Velvet cause it was the first Lynch movie I saw (and loved it). Haven't seen all his films, but I thouroughly enjoyed every one I've seen thus far.

Eraserhead.

Bizarre film, and the first one of his I watched.

I voted for The Elephant Man, I've always loved that one, but Eraserhead and Mulholland Drive are close behind.  Only others I've seen are Dune, The Straight Story (actually, I think I missed a little in the middle) and Blue Velvet.  I've seen Blue Velvet once, I didn't like it much, giving it a middling rating and fairly harsh review on a movie reviewing site I use (Criticker), but for some reason I decided to buy the Blu-ray not long ago.  It kind of stuck around in my head, maybe I was in the wrong mood for it, I don't know.  Sometimes it takes me some time, thought, and a re-watch to warm up to a film.  For example, I wasn't thrilled with Branded to Kill the first time but I gave it another go a few years later and I loved it!  Think I might watch Blue Velvet tonight.

Tough call, but I voted for BLUE VELVET, because it made me feel smarter than Roger Ebert.  :twirl:

Though really, my favorite thing Lynch has done (out of what I've seen) is TWIN PEAKS - even if the second season went all wonky.

Voted for Blue Velvet because I haven't laughed so hard at a movie since.

Blue Velvet for me is good but kind of missing something. tried to watch Inland Empire recently and couldn't get into it.

Would go with Mullholland Drive even though I kinda like every movie he did. Eraserhead is a little bit too weird for my taste.
But movies aside...my love for any of his movies is destroyed by my love for the Twin Peaks-show. Little bit sad, that he won't do a third season, but glad that he will shoot new footage for the upcoming 25th Anniversary and the Blu Ray-release.

voted for Blue Velvet, since it's the only one I've seen. I thought it was a good movie

Seeing Dennis Hopper in it reminds me why I like watching Dennis Hopper.

Dune (1984) is the only one of the above movies that I've watched. I've watched this one repeatedly. My only complaint is that it was edited from a much longer version. I've seen the longer DVD version, but was quite let down when only the shorter version was released on blu ray.
