Title: Favorite video game music?
Post by: Zapranoth on February 05, 2013, 03:08:47 AM
For me, in order:

1.   The "Terran one" theme from Starcraft.  (The most evocative vid game music I can think of)
2.   The Halo theme (Mjolnir mix)
3.  Peter gunn theme from Spy Hunter, preferably heard in a sit-down unit.
4.   The music from Mappy rocked.  (Electric banjo)
5.    Xenophobe!  (Anyone else play that?)
6.    Mad Planets

Nier had the best soundtrack of any game I've ever played.  Just so much moody and extremely memorable stuff in there.

Dark Void had a great soundtrack as well.

MORROWIND theme music.

Morrowind had good music, but the updated version they play in Skyrim is pretty good..it has more of that epic adventure feeling to it.

Either way I play with the music off, to make the atmosphere more "real" so to speak.

Also, I get emotional with music sometimes..one time while playing Oblivion, I came across a man knelt down in front of his wife's grave, laying flowers on the grave as this incredibly sad piece of violin music played in the background, with the only other sound being that of the gentle rain.

The man spoke in a very depressed tone as he told me how much he loved her, and the whole scene was too much for me..I began to cry somewhat hard, and I turned the game off.

It may have had something to do with the real-life loss I suffered at the time, but either way, never underestimate the power of music.

I'm glad to see the Mappy music mentioned. It was part of what drew me to the game.

I'll also second the music from the Zelda games, although I like the music from every one I've played, not just the first two.

And I'll add Willow for the NES. It was a direct Zelda ripoff, but it was lots of fun to play, and the music was quite good.

From the Wii, I'll mention a relatively obscure game called Fragile Dreams. It is an anime-style game with some very good, melancholy music.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 had some really touching music in the "A Dying World" section.

If you were playing it and knew the story up to that point, you knew it truly was the end of the world, which gave it a lot of emotional resonance as well.

I liked the rockin' opening music to Road Avenger for the Sega CD.
It was also called "Road Blaster".

So...
Now that we're on a laser game kick, how about the absolutely awesome opening of Date East's 1984 hit Cobra Command?  Blue Thunder, Japanese style!

I saw Cobra Command before but never really played it.  I did, however, play the NES version and regret it to this day.

I think most of us who played the NES version regretted it. It was either that or that Tecmo game with the helicopter that was way worse at the time. I forget the name of the game though.
The Japanese laser version of Cobra Command was a trip though. Data East put in some great animation that fit the bill for the day's style and there were some awesome scenes of destruction when you shot down the enemy's planes and choppers. There was a great level that took place in a Middle Eastern oil field that you had to fight through while the terrorists were destroying it.  Another nice level where you take on the enemy's naval fleet too.
