Title: Top 100 arcade games of all time!
Post by: retrorussell on February 26, 2013, 06:47:01 PM
Kind of self-explanatory really, just post 100 of the greatest arcade games in your opinion, in no particular order, one poster at a time (unless there's like a 12-hour gap from the last post or something).
1. DIG DUG (1982, Namco/Atari)
My all time favorite.  Gotta get my Dig Dug cabinet in my living room fixed.

4. PAC-MAN (1980, Namco/Bally/Midway)
The best-selling arcade hit of all-time!

GORF!  The first game to verbally taunt the player!

"You will meet a Gorfian doom, Space Cadet!"

6: POOYAN.

You are a mother pig (swinelet?) who attempts to rescue her piggies from the clutches of gum chewing wolves.  :teddyr:

GORF!  The first game to verbally taunt the player!

"You will meet a Gorfian doom, Space Cadet!"

Actually, Wizard Of Wor came out before Gorf.  So did Berzerk for that matter.
7. GALAGA (1981, Namco/Midway)
Still a great game, with or without the "no-fire" trick!

8. AMIDAR

You are a crazy looking seahorse (or something like that ) who paints and fills in blocks. Doesn't sound too exciting, but I enjoyed it.  :teddyr:

9. ELEVATOR ACTION

You are a secret agent travelling up and down in a building sliced in two, stealing documents from offices and also shooting and squashing rival agents under lifts as well as braining them with falling light fittings.

12. WONDER BOY IN MONSTERLAND

One of my favourites.

You are a young knight (very young, judging by the fact that you run around in a diaper) and you kill snakes and a few indeterminate things. You also get help from cheery bartenders and shop owners who greet you either with a cheery "What?" or "Welcome. What you want?"  :teddyr: :teddyr:

13: GOLDENAXE

Not the Nollywood film of the same name, btw  :buggedout:

You battle the dreaded Death Adder and then, when the game is won, it explodes and all the characters chase the players down the street.  :buggedout: :teddyr: :teddyr:

34. MR. DO! (Universal, 1982)
The coolest clown ever!  Of all the Dig Dug clones, nothing can come close to this one!  Spawned multiple sequels (and even a laserdisc one was planned!) and was far and away Universal's biggest hit.
Whenever I hear the "Can-Can" theme, I ALWAYS think of this game.

44. BERZERK (1980)
This game has some strange trivia attached to it.
Quote
Berzerk was the first video game known to have been involved in the death of a player. In January 1981, 19-year-old Jeff Dailey died of a heart attack soon after posting a score of 16,660 on Berzerk. In October of the following year, Peter Burkowski made the Berzerk top-ten list twice in fifteen minutes, just a few seconds before also dying of a heart attack at the age of 18.

GORF!  The first game to verbally taunt the player!

"You will meet a Gorfian doom, Space Cadet!"

...as well as congratulate him.
"you have destroyed my flagship, but for now, you have been pro-mo-ted to Space Captain".   I put lost of quarters into this back in the day!

And let's not forget the other taunter, The Wizard of Wor:

"You bones will dry in the dungeons of Wor, ta ta ta ta!"

BTW: same company for both games (Bally Midway) and they used the same voice synthesis.

No but I've been to Kennywood Park (just oustside of Pittsburgh), and it has/had lots of retro games (even penny arcades with strippers doing their thing).
Here's one I always liked playing.

Oh man I remember this one...I used to pay it a lot.  I remember the people throwing flower pots out the window and down at your character, and the windows shutting on your fingers, and the "Oh noooooooooooooo!!" as your guy fell to his doom. Pachinko's Space age cousin.  It was like a physical version of Space invaders, you shot balls at targets.  It was a pinball chassis, with two joystick controllers on top to fire the cannon.

I don't think I can give this a number but there was a Japanese fighting game I played many years ago in the early 1990s. It was similar to Double Dragon and when your last life was lost, someone would shout at you in Japanese. I met someone a while later who was from there and I asked the meaning of the phrase. He blushed red enough to resemble a tomato and said that it was an incredibly rude thing to say.

The first honorable mention:
1. MOUSE TRAP (1981, Exidy)
Great maze game where you can change from a mouse (being attacked by cats) into a dog (who can turn the tables on the cats)!  Avoid the hawk, which can kill either form.

Why in the world does he play with his foot?

He used to do that to show off.  He even defended his Crystal Castles record with his foot one time! The guy is just that odd, but that talented too.

Mark is a little tiny guy with a big attitude, and he takes a bit of getting used to.
He's somewhat independent wealthy as a consultant and is quite able to cut his own rules.
He has his own website at www.classicarcadegaming.com and he is the host of the annual Classic Arcade Gaming Tournament. He is also, like myself, good friends with Twin Galaxies founder\patron saint of gamers, Walter Day, and arcade legend Richie Knucklez.

Above all, Mark is very odd, but once you get to know him and his ways, you can be yourself around him and actually find him to be a pretty good guy.

This was sort of a sequel to PHOENIX.

Yeah; you warp I think from level 1 to 2 if you go behind the castle in the northern corner (where you can't see yourself) and jump.
After playing once, on your next credit a door will be opened in the first castle.  Go in and jump to go to level 3.
On level 3 grab the hat and go to the corner of the maze where you can't see yourself.  Press jump to go to level 5.
There's one other, I think to go from 5 to 7 that may also involve grabbing a hat and going to a hidden corner and jumping.
Also, notice that when you get the high score your initials will appear on the first level building.
And, if you jump like 100 times in the bottom corner of level 1 (you'll have to get stung by the bees twice) the programmer's initials FXL (Franz X. Lanzinger) will appear.

3. Moon Cresta (1980, Nichibutsu/Gremlin/SEGA)
Multi-stage shooter where you can add parts to your ship, increasing its firepower dramatically!  The opening tune is VERY recognizable for many arcade vets.

I tried Crystal Castles a few times and never got the warp thing, but I remember seeing Mark play it and go through it like he was a hot knife thru butter. I was never good at any of the trak-ball games. I was always better at stuff like Wizard of Wor and I was able to go for quite a while on one quarter with Ikari Warriors.

4. Bagman (1982, Valadon/Stern)
Cool (but VERY hard game) where you are a convict trying to clear mines of gold bags, with speeding carts, deep shafts and 2 tenacious guards providing constant danger.

7. TARG (1980, Exidy)
Simplistic but tough game with a 9X9 grid of boxes you must move your ship between while avoiding/shooting sneaky arrow-shaped baddies.  An extra target comes out once in a while to try to ram you, as well.

10. Nemesis/Gradius, Konami 1985
One of Konami's greatest achievements.  Groundbreaking shooter with increasing firepower options after destroying groups of enemies or certain enemies, leaving power-up capsules you can collect.  Colorful graphics, hidden bonuses/1ups, and amazing music makes this one of the all-time greatest shooters.  Also introduced us to Konami's obsession with Easter Island statues (Moai).

11. CARNIVAL (1980, Gremlin/SEGA)
Fun shooter where you mow down rows of rabbits, bears and ducks (the latter of which can swoop down and eat your bullets) on rotating lines.  Shoot off the pipes on a rotating wheel above and eliminate all the targets to advance to a bonus game where you shoot a polar bear as much as you can before he runs off.

My buddy Richie Knucklez had one of these in his old arcade. In fact, Richie had a huge business a few years back before he had to downscale to a smaller one..he had everyone show up for special events..Billy Mitchell, Steve Wiebe, new and current DK champ Hank Chien, and all of the Twin Galaxies people, to name a few. Keith Apecary was even there!

I miss Richie's old place...we had world recognized tournaments and live webcasts. If it was a game 30 years or older, Richie had it!

12. FOOD FIGHT (1983, General Computer Corporation/Atari)
Great version of the timeless school cafeteria pastime.  Steer a boy around an open playfield, tossing piles of food at chefs who can do the same to you, as you try to reach the ice cream cone on the opposite side of the screen.  Here and there an instant replay of a successfully completed level plays.  This was one of two games General Computer Corporation made for Atari (Quantum being the other) in payment for ripping off Missile Command earlier.

Yep, Richie is a good friend of mine, and I remember the video because I was there the day it was shot.  Richie was also the front man for a short-lived but very popular New Jersey hardcore metal band called Knuckle Sandwich.

Here's one of his old songs from his first album, "Nice."  The song is called "Show Me The Rock".

18. Do! Run Run (1984, Universal)
Great 3rd sequel to Mr. Do where you guide a clown through a playfield collecting dots (which can be upgraded to higher-value items by drawing a line around them, in Qix-fashion) and avoiding monsters.  As per usual the letter monsters and free credit diamond also make an appearance.  Giant rolling logs can be used to mush multiple enemies at once, and your powerball is now restored by collecting dots instead of having to wait for it to return after destroying a monster.
