Title: Asian pool-boy calls everyone "effendi"
Post by: GoHawks on February 27, 2013, 04:50:49 AM
I saw parts of this film somewhere in the early to mid-90s on cable on a premium channel, possibly HBO.  I don't know how the movie starts, having never seen the beginning.  It is set in the real world right now (or at least when it was filmed) and mostly (entirely?) takes place in a mansion that is somehow isolated from civilization (I think it was on an island).  There were a rich couple, a butler, a maid and a pool-boy.  There may have been other servants, but if so they were purely in the background.

I think the rich couple had recently acquired their wealth.  The husband was writing a novel or a screenplay and kept getting the butler and possibly the others involved in acting it out.  I specifically remember one scene where the butler's character had to hold his breath underwater for a ridiculously long time, which of course the butler could not do.  I don't think the wife "did" anything, which I think leads to something later on.

Everyone except the pool-boy was white; the pool-boy was Far Eastern (I think Chinese).  I call him a pool-boy because that's what his job was, and I think that's what his name was too (or at least that's what everyone called him).  I think the butler may have been English.  For most of the movie, the pool-boy acted very modestly and took all of the abuse aimed at him with a smile.  He talked with a very stereotypical pidgin coolie vocabulary.  The really weird part is that he always called everyone "effendi", which really confused me because that's a Near Eastern term.

Anyway, long story short, the wife wants to have an affair with the pool-boy (because she's bored) and it turns out he's really a smooth talking con-man.  The wife gets all nervous about the planned tryst whereupon the maid offers to let the wife use her IUD (or maybe diaphragm).  The wife gets a disgusted look on her face, not at the thought of using another woman's contraceptive, but at the thought of using something that belongs to a SERVANT.  I also remember that she dresses up in a really ridiculous outfit that made her look like an insect in an attempt to impress and intimidate the pool-boy.

The movie wasn't particularly entertaining (I kept changing the channel) and may have been direct to video.  I'm just curious to find out what it was so I can look it up and see if I can find out some answers about it (like why the Chinese guy called everyone "effendi").
