Title: SAMURAI COP Special Edition DVD
Post by: major jay on March 09, 2013, 09:09:47 AM
It's listed for a March 19th release date on Amazon.

Special Edition: remastered from the newly discovered 35mm negatives and featuring new interviews with stars Robert Z'Dar, Gerald Okamura, and cinematographer Peter Palian.

I wasn't going to bite, until I read this on the director's facebook page.

The Samurai Cop Special Edition DVD may be getting a 2nd release push-back due to an important interview being added to the Bonus Features. More on this as it is confirmed or denied.

Hopefully it's with Matt Hannon or Mark Frazer. That would make it a definite buy for me.

Oh man!  I actually finally broke down and bought the older dvd of this just a couple weeks ago.  Sounds like I'll be double dipping!

Sorry about the bad info, but Wikipedia shows that he died in 2006.
I'm going wait for a review before buying this.
I wonder if it really will be remastered from original negatives.
Something smells fishy.
Cinema Epoch (the company releasing it) doesn't even show it listed on their website.

I love this film for having not one but 2 of the greatest scenes in bad movie history

this is beyond mere movie making, it's ... art

The Amir Shervan facebook page was made by a fan in an attempt to find his post Samurai Cop movies which are Killing American Style, Gypsy and Young Rebels. I believe they were only released in a few countries and none of them were English speaking. The guy that runs the page does speak to one of the dudes from Cinema Epoch quite a bit so I would say it will go ahead. Those other Shervan movies are also set to get a DVD release. I did ask about a Samurai Cop Blu ray but I was told it was dependent on the sales for the new DVD.

I really hope that the March 19th release date listed on Amazon.com sticks. Samurai Cop in remastered anamorphic widescreen!
This is one of my favorite groan incuding bits of "humor" in the film.

Looks like Amazon is now showing April 9th for a release date.  So, if that sticks, it'll be pushed back, but not too long of a wait...

I just noticed that too. I'm going to keep my pre-order out there until the release finally happens. Sorry, can't type anymore as I've got to change the trash.

I'm glad they're trying to do it right.

Bummer.
Quote
Some bad news, the Frank (Mark Frazer) interview is not going to be able to make it to the DVD on time for the Special Edition release and they do not want to push back the date any further (the silver lining; the DVD is coming soon). However, his interview is planned to be released on a bonus DVD included in the Shervan Boxed set, no ETA on that release as of now though.
Bigger bummer

RIP... His work will live on in the hearts of a select few

I need to check out AMERICAN REVENGE, his only other starring movie, although he worked as a carpenter on THE BLOB as well which is pretty cool.

That sucks about Matt Hannon passing away almost a year ago at only 56. What was the cause of death?

Also, it sucks they won't have the Mark Frazier interview on the new DVD. So is the release date now officially April 19th as listed on Amazon or still April 23rd as it had been for the last couple of weeks?

Damn, how great would it be if this Greg guy got the band back together (minus Amir of course) and made a sequel? :twirl:

Samurai Cop 2 is coming soon, apparently

By Katie Rife  Jul 3, 2014 2:11 PM
In a move that’s sure to generate slightly more enthusiasm than his partner can muster, Cineridge Entertainment has announced that Samurai Cop 2 is in the works. Amir Shervan’s remarkably incompetent 1989 buddy cop movie is routinely cited as one of the most unintentionally hilarious films ever made—and now that people make movies like that on purpose, it’s time to give it another go.

Reportedly already on board, star Matt Hannon emerged in a YouTube message to his fans that was posted Tuesday. Hannon only makes vague reference to a sequel, but confirms that yes, he will be doing audio commentary on Samurai Cop, yes, he is wearing a wig, and yes, he is still alive. Perpetually underwhelmed sidekick Mark Frazer and Gerald Okamura—the acclaimed martial artist whose Samurai Cop sex scene has been permanently seared onto fans’ eyeballs—will also return. Other names that have been thrown around in reference to Samurai Cop 2 are Meatballs star Kristine DeBell, porn star Lexi Belle, and, oddly enough, George Lazenby and Seymour Cassel. Robert Z’Dar’s chin and the lion head made of yarn could not be reached for comment.

"Have you been circumcised"?

Hey retrorussell, don't know if your a fan of the movie, but they're bringing him to your backyard this Tuesday night.
Quote
Tuesday, September 9th at 7:30pm | $10.  Advance tickets are here.

SPECIAL B-MOVIE BINGO EVENT: We’ve got Matt Hannon, Samurai Cop himself, coming in person on September 9th! He’s going to introduce the movie, answer some audience questions, and maybe even be an honorary Guest Judge. In the words of Matt Hannon, “I will sit with you up front and I will place the lion head upon your piano.”

Our love affair with SAMURAI COP (1991) started in 2005 when we found what was an apparently unauthorized DVD version at Movie Madness. We’ve spent the better part of the last decade privately wondering to ourselves about the origins of this film, and the fate of its cast. Now we know too much, and in spite of this over-saturation of information, satisfaction has been achieved. For us, and now all, things have come full circle.

Now, on to the movie. It’s 1991, and the Japanese Katana Gang have a death grip on the city of Los Angeles. Who better to deal with the problem than Joe Marshall, the “Samurai Cop”? Hannon, who was once on Sylvester Stallone’s personal bodyguard detail, stars in the title role. This is a man that looks like a Dorito. For half the movie, he wears a woman’s wig with a baseball hat. And regarding his police work: let’s just say… he can “read eyes”. Robert Z’dar co-stars as the maniac samurai henchman Yamas**ta bent on taking out Marshall. His beard obscures his enormous jaw. Be ready for burning humans, severed limbs, gun and sword fights, and lots of long, awkward love scenes. Join Joe “The Samurai” Marshall and his sidekick Frank as they take on the minions of the crime underworld. Written and directed by Amir Shervan.

SAMURAI COP 2 premieres tonight. Here's a pre-release review by Dave from The 80's Picture House.

Quote
This afternoon I was in the enviable position of sitting in a private screening room to watch Samurai Cop 2: Deadly Vengeance before it’s premiere here in Los Angeles tomorrow. I also had Gregory Hatanaka (Director) and Mathew Karedas (lead actor) sat with me.
Now the cynical amongst you may well presume that those circumstances would skew my opinions on the movie, and ultimately my review. Add to the fact that we have interviewed Mathew Karedas on our podcast (multiple times) and also interviewed Mark Frazer, Lisa London (and on ’60 Minutes With’ I’ve interviewed Mel Novak) who are all in the movie, and that could throw more fuel onto the ‘he’s going to write a sychophantic review’ fire.
My thoughts here are honest and a true reflection of my experience watching the movie…Mat knows that I’d tell him to his face if I thought it was crap.
In one way I’m slightly hampering myself by not wanting to give too much of the storyline away…there are surprises in store that I definitely don’t want to give away! Suffice to say that the plot has twists and turns that can’t necessarily be fully taken in with just the one viewing. I personally can’t wait to watch it again tomorrow (multiple times) to clarify a few plot points, but at no point are you ever left scratching your head, as the movie keeps throwing one highly entertaining scene after another at you.
Trying to capture ‘lightning in a bottle’ a 2nd time could well put you on a hiding to nothing, but kudos to director Gregory Hatanaka for stepping up to the plate and having the balls and tenacity to get this movie out there. Trying to make a deliberately ‘bad movie’ would alienate the majority of both core and casual fans, while at the same time making a polished action movie would probably disappoint those who regularly play our Samurai Cop “wig” drinking game. I’m extremely pleased to report that I saw lightning bottled a 2nd time and a great balance between new and old was onscreen.
Fans of the original are going to be spoilt with homages to it…some obvious, some not so obvious…another reason to rewatch multiple times! But it’s not all about using the original as a narrative crutch, as there are scenes and lines in this movie that stand on their own and will be taken to heart by fans as new cinematic gold for them to re-enact and repeat.
I honestly cried with laughter multiple times while watching this movie….I’ll leave you to discover when you think that may have happened…I’ll give you one hint though; watch out for a cameo appearance on an aeroplane! I also pumped my fist with excitement on numerous occasions and was also impressed with the higher standard of action scenes and fighting.
It was a pleasure to see Mat and Mark Frazer reunited as Joe and Frank, and Mark gives a fantastic performance throughout. He also spoils the core fanbase with classic looks to camera and a visual/ verbal ‘call back’ gag that is the most over the top in the movie….you’ll give one of those ‘groaning’ laughs, but still lap it up. He also gave me another of my ‘crying with laughter’ moments.
Watch out for the acting from Mat too, he plays it up when needed but also gives some very sublte moments, especially some background facial acting while he’s not the focus of the scene…plus the black ‘budgie smugglers’ return! I’d love to see him return as Joe Marshall once again, but also be given the opportunity to stretch his acting chops in other projects too.
The supporting cast give their all and it shows on screen in their performance. Kayden Kross is my tip to cross over from the adult movie industry to mainstream cinema in a big way…are you listening Hollywood? But that’s not to distract from the likes of Bai Ling, Cranston Komuro, Laurene Landon (Hundra fans; you will NOT be disappointed), Melissa Moore, Mel Novak, Lexi Belle, Mindy Robinson, Lisa London and everyone else in the cast that lights up the screen. Theres even a superb performance by Joe Estevez as an angry and p**sed off police chief…and regular listeners will know how much we love our angry police chiefs.
Add into the mix the return of Gerald Okamura (including an inspired flashback with him from the original movie) and fans of Samurai Cop are going to lap this up like kittens put in front of their first bowl of cream.
That’s not to discount new fans though as there is more than enough brand new material to ensnare a whole new generation of fans.
I do need to point out to people that have seen the trailer and think that Joe Marshall is on a space station…all will be revealed and it’s not what you think!
So there it is, my initial thoughts and musings after one viewing….and YES, I bloody did love it. You may be sitting there thinking “I knew that he’d write a good review’, but I make no apologies for telling the truth and saying that I’m really looking forward to watching it again tomorrow and picking up on as many bits as I can that I missed the first time around.
There will of course be people that don’t like it and dismiss it, but isn’t that the same for EVERY movie?
If you are of similar mindset to myself and/or a fan of Samurai Cop, then buy a ticket ASAP and get your ass to a cinema when it comes to play near you. If you are not a fan or have never seen the original, give this one a chance as there’s plenty of new stuff to entertain you.

Finally got to watch this. ITS CRAZY. Rev, you need to review this. It's way out there, and nearly impossible to get a handle on, but to be sure it's an artsy fartsy mess. Yeah, there are plenty of funny references to the original, but plenty to old films as well. It's a very weird love letter to the original and I mostly loved it (except for the soundtrack, but it's starting to grow on me) It definitely ain't for everybody.

I have to be honest. I was disappointed with Samurai Cop 2...mostly because its production value was higher, the actors seemed to have found a community college drama class in the last 20 years, and Tommy Wiseau wasn't nearly as interesting as I thought he'd have been. It was somehow a worse movie for being a better movie, if that makes sense. It was still a bad movie and I enjoyed it on that merit, but it certainly was not the monumental world wonder that was the first one. I'd say the first one is the great pyramid and the sequel is some lesser pyramid filled with some pharoah no one cares to remember. :/
