Title: movies you should like, but somehow don't...
Post by: zombie no.one on March 14, 2013, 04:49:20 PM
what movies seem to tick all your boxes marked 'stuff I really like', but somehow the finished product leaves you underwhelmed?

here's a few of mine:

FRIDAY THE 13TH. big fan of early 80s slashers, both good and 'bad' (so bad they're good), but this doesn't interest me at all, I find it pretty tedious. the 2nd part also...

A SERIOUS MAN: usually love Coen bros and their understated black comedy, but this bored the heck out of me for some reason

AMERICAN MOVIE: normally I'm a big fan of documentary films that focus on eccentric crackpots and their dreams of world domination (KING OF KONG, GRIZZLY MAN, the obscure but great IN BED WITH CHRIS NEEDHAM) but couldn't get into this one at all.

Being John Malkovich (1999): I'm a big fan of weird movies, and I've like Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman's other work, but for some reason I don't really care for this movie. It usually surprises people when I tell them that, because they know my taste in movies.

Crash (2004) - most likely the biggest "meh" movie to receive an Oscar for best picture. I gave it a shot but wasn't drawn in or impressed. The only good thing about Crash in my opinion was Sandra Bullock's performance.

I like that movie, but BURN AFTER READING is the one that did not work for me; didn't really go for the humor and it shifted tones too abruptly.  The only thing I liked was J.K. Simmons' character.  And I usually love the Coens too.

THE PIANO.  I'm a fan of all three leads, I like period pieces and I can usually get into those darker/trippier storylines but I just couldn't like this.  I'm not even sure why, exactly.  I guess I just didn't buy the characters.

Didn't like this movie either, but then again I had no prior expectations

Oscar awards tend to be pretty hit-and-miss IMO , I wouldn't use them as a guarantee of enjoyment.

strange isn't it, BURN AFTER READING is Coen brothers at their (near) best for me, almost up there with FARGO...
