Title: Evil Dead
Post by: Ted C on March 25, 2013, 09:44:55 AM
I recently saw The Evil Dead again on Netflix. It's much better than I remember it being the first time I saw it, decades ago. Low-budget, sure, but when I watched it this time, it actually made sense and creeped me out a bit.

Classic to us, maybe not so much to the mainstream movie audience.

Raimi said it's not a remake, rather a re-cap. True fans should know this!  :tongueout:

Only from an "evil spirits tormenting you as much as they possibly can" standpoint.

I know I'm going to get killed for saying this, but I actually like Evil Dead waaaay more then Evil Dead 2 or Army of Darkness. Army was just kinda dumb to me and Evil Dead 2 is a less gory version of the first one with some slapstick.

I'm sure the dumbness was Intentional because Raimi knew exactly what he was doing. For years Army was my least favorite of the Evil Dead movies, but I thought of it as a pure Comedy (which it is) and the movie started to grow on me.

I gotta go with Criswell on this one-the first was the best-the second was fun-ARMY OF DARKNESS-dumb. Dont get me wrong-dumb is ok-but Sam turned into a bigshot director and lost his heart-just like Peter Jackson.

Maybe i'm on my own here but I liked Sam's spiderman movies.  He had more heart in it then the current remake.  Also he added some of his horror roots to the movies, like the scene when doc oct was in the hospital.

I totally agree with the comments that the first one was the best. The second was fun, don't get me wrong, but I just like the fact that the original wasn't played strictly for laughs. I couldn't bring myself to sit through Army of Darkness to be honest. I feel that a truly effective horror movie should not contain any humerous elements whatsoever. There are a few excelptions though. ROTLD for example. I also agree with the comments about Raimi and Peter Jackson. How in the hell you go from Dead-Alive to LOTR is beyond me.

For years I had only seen Army of Darkness never knowing about the first two movies. It wasn't until I was I was watching the credits that I saw it used clips from the first two. That was when I watched them all. I think of them like Evil Dead as a horror movie, then two Army of Darkness movies which are comedies.

This new remake looks like it will be fun!

Even though I'm saying I prefer the first one over 2 and AOD. I still like that 2 is more comedic. I feel if they just made II a straight up sequel with the same amount of horror it would feel like more of the same.

Kind of like TCM 2 in a way. If you can't top the first, make fun of it!

Way back when, this was the 'main' movie discussion board on this site.  It was separated into "Good" and "Bad" much later.  "Bad" does not necessarily mean "bad."

For anyone interested, it's up for free streaming on Hulu at the moment.  No idea how long it will stay free.

Am I the only one that liked the 3rd movie here.  That one actually had a battle between armies.

Battles between armies don't make movies good. If that was the case Pearl Harbor would be considered a masterpiece.

I quite like Army of Darkness, but it's a very different sort of film from Evil Dead.

The original 3 Evil Dead films are so wildly different in terms of overall tone that it's easy to pick one in particular that is your favorite. I've met plenty of people who greatly prefer Army of Darkness over the other 2 films.

BTW, I enjoyed the Evil Dead remake too. Good gory old school horror fun!

Not at all.  I still love the 3rd movie.  It's really the 2nd one I can do without (getting ready to duck for all the crap about to be flung at me).  My personal opinon is that 1 and 3 are the best of the three.  1 is a wonderful horror movie, and 3 is a great comedy/horror.

Okay.  I've just seen the new Evil Dead movie.  I was a bit apprehensive about it, but my brother was in town and he wanted to go see it.  So we did.

First thing you have to understand is that this isn't a remake, a reboot, a re-imagining, a rerun, a refrigerator, or anything else starting with a "re-".  It, in it's purest form, is nothing more or less than a sequel.  They could have called it Evil Dead 3 and I wouldn't have had any problem with it.  (Yes.  Three.  Army of Darkness is more of a side story.)

Much like Jason and Freddy don't always go after the same people, and it's not the same people that keep moving into the Amittyville house, this is just a different group of people going to the Cabin.  No Ash, no Linda, no Good ol' Reliable Jake.  (Although there are certainly nods towards them.)

Now there are differences in some of the visuals and locations, but that's easily dismissed by anyone that is in anyway familiar with sequels.  They don't always get all the facts right.  Also there are quite a few call back to the old movies, but again, that's just kinda what sequels do.

So... how was the movie?  A bit slow to start and they seemed to put a tad too much focus on the backstory of the characters early on.  The look of it was a bit more generic than the previous Evil Deads.  They didn't quite have Raimi's flair or style.  (It's also almost completely lacking in the humorous touches.  Whether this is a good thing or not is up to you.)

A lot of that is made up for when the red stuff starts flowing though.  It does a very good job of capturing the brutality and gore of the original movie and cranking it up several notches, although it doesn't quite feel as supernatural.  I suppose you could also accuse it of crossing into torture porn territory.  It did have a sort of SAW meets Hills Have Eyes feel at times.

Really, I'm glad they didn't try to use the Ash character, or even make the lead into another Ash.  It lets the movie stand more on it's own rather than just being an imitation of what came earlier.  It wouldn't be hard to say that this is just something that happened to a new gang after the cabin was done chewing up and spitting out Ash and his original gang.

Two last things.

I still preferred the original Necronimicon.  The new one just didn't have the same style to it.

Also, an easily missed detail to watch for.  When the sister is first introduced, she's sitting on the rusted old remains of Ash's car from the previous movies.

Just because Michael Bay destroys something doesn't mean that idea is bad on its own.  Transformers could have been so much better if it had another director.

I'm going to go see this today.

EDIT:

Ok I just got home. I enjoyed this movie, it was a wonderful gore-fest. My wife didn't enjoy it at all though.

I just read Chainsaw Midgets review of the new EVIL DEAD movie-and its what I expected. Me and Tiana and some freinds are going to Kalamazoo (biggest town around) to see it this Saterday-so Im kinda hyped. In no way will it ever top the 2 classics-but itll be fun-because well have popcorn and old freinds I aint hung out with since High School!  thats 1980!
