Very sad news indeed. He was one of my personal heroes!  :bluesad:

A great write up about Roger's career and life from a Chicago Tribune writer.

Sad to hear that he's gone.

Still, picturing him and Siskel reviewing movies together again in the afterlife creates for a nice mental image.

Terribly sad news. Truly the gold standard for film criticism in my eyes. Thankfully we will always have his great books, and a lifetime of writing to continue to enrich our view on films of the past. His dvd commentary for Citzen Kane is truly outstanding and reflect a man that not only had great love for film but also immense knowledge to back it up.

I also greatly enjoyed his commentary track for Dark City.

Sad. He was probably the last famous movie critic there will ever be. R.I.P. Roger.

A class act all the way around, never more so than in the way he faced his physical illness in the last decade of his life. RIP, Mr. Ebert.  You were awesome!

Very sad news.  RIP.

He was a great critic.  His writing certainly was the gold standard - the benchmark.  There is no other critic active that could even tie his shoes, much less wear them.

We'll miss you, Roger.  Have some popcorn and enjoy the show.

^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^

That comment sums it all up: RIP Mr Ebert - one of the few film critics who knew what they were talking about and not just a bloviator who cared nothing for films.

RIP, there will never be another film critic as well known as Roger Ebert.

I always liked Roger more than Gene, Roger was more down to e.,

A classic bit from a 1998 episode of David Letterman.

Watched the SPINAL TAP review after the NORTH one.

Man, so much of that clip is just plain classic for both Siskel and Ebert.  It's a stunning tribute to both of them ... and I had completely forgotten that opening sequence (the brief case vs vending machine!).  Super banter at the end of the review.

I always tuned in to Ebert better than Siskel, but that clip makes me miss both of them.

Right on, Torgo.  He was a hero and like others have said, the way he adapted to his circumstances was amazing and inspiring.  I remember watching Sneak Previews from the late '70s and always connected more with Roger, too.  But they were a great team, foils for each other and it was nice to read that they were like brothers, too.

Sad news, and sadly a long time coming with the cancer.  :bluesad:
Personally, I was always more Team Siskel but Roger was an icon.

He had  a wonderful cameo appearance on the old 1990's TV series EARLY EDITION, but I can't find it on YouTube.  It was classic!

I remember that.  A kid was distraught after seeing a cartoon.  The kid was going to run away, but Mr. Ebert explained it to him.

My favorite Roger Ebert story: some years ago comedian Rob Schneider had a bit of a war-of-words in the press with the movie critic of an L.A. newspaper who'd trashed his then-current movie Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo. The critic called Schneider a "third rate comic" (which is probably being kind, IMO) and Schneider responded by saying the writer was "a third rate critic" who was unqualified to review the film since he had never won a Pulitzer Prize.

...when Ebert reviewed the Deuce movie, he mentioned the battle between Schneider and the other critic and then ended his review by saying "As chance would have it, I have won the Pulitzer Prize, and so I am qualified. Speaking in my official capacity as a Pulitzer Prize winner, Mr. Schneider, your movie sucks."  :teddyr:

You know, it just occurred to me---we forgot to mention Rog's screenwriting work for Russ Meyer. He wrote BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS and co-wrote UP! and BENEATH THE VALLEY OF THE ULTRA-VIXENS. That gives him immediate bad-movie cred.
