Title: Re-Animator
Post by: Ted C on April 09, 2013, 02:31:13 PM
I saw Re-Animator for the first time over the weekend. It may be "bad", but most of the time it's not really bad.

It did overstretch our suspension of disbelief when a severed head started talking. The larynx has been destroyed with a shovel and it has no lungs to push air through it, so how is it talking? The plot device serum can justify it being alive, but there was no attempt to justify the talking. Come on, writer, work with me.

I love this movie.  I may be sick, but I actually enjoy all 3 of them.  I've been hearing/reading rumors for years about a 4th, and I'm hoping it'll happen.

Although the head could talk, I have to admit that if I were a self-respecting talking severed head, I would want to eat Babrbara Crampton too!  :bouncegiggle:  What a great body she had in that scene.

Anyhow, for a serious reply..I remember seeing this one at the Strand Theatre for just $1.50 back in the day of the mid 80's. Try getting prices like THAT again.

Also, I liked the fact that aside from the part with the talking head,  thatr the rest of the dead were treated accordingly. For example, the dead cat..when re-animated, he was unable to movie because his back was broken.  Point being, that there were lmitations to the movements of creatures with nervous system impediments, instead of the serum being some sor tof cure-all that defied the physical limitations of nueral impairment. The dead were treated somewhat seriously.

Who's gonna believe a talking head? Get a job in a sideshow.

The character originates in an H.P. Lovecraft Story called Herbert West: Reanimator.  Kind of like Moriarty from Sherlock Holmes mythos, the character seems to have a much greater life outside of the one story he appears in, surviving in adaptations and other interpretations.

Wow.  I'm sorry.

Check my avatar,,,,and, to illustrate more than a passing familiarity with HP Lovecraft, check my screen name.

For the record, we've had RE-ANIMATOR threads on here before, going back years.  This is not the first time this film has been discussed.

And, to add to the Lovecraft trivia, "Herbert West: Reanimator" was originally a serial in a magazine publication.  It was not initially published as single short story.

I used to have an audiobook my wife got me a few years ago "Jeffrey Combs Reads H. P. Lovecraft's Herbert West - Re-Animator".  It was awesome!
