Title: June @ 366 Weird Movies: TOYS IN THE ATTIC, THIS MUST BE THE PLACE, more!
Post by: Rev. Powell on June 07, 2013, 01:38:46 PM
Feel the heat- June at 366 Weird Movies.

MARQUIS (1989) (http://366weirdmovies.com/145-marquis-1989): Certified Weird! "Although you could consider it a porno puppet shock show or a misanthropic fable concerning man’s animal nature, perhaps the best way to look at Marquis is as a buddy picture about the misadventures of a canine aristocrat and his pet penis."

THE TELEPHONE BOOK (1971) (http://366weirdmovies.com/list-candidate-the-telephone-book-1971/): "The search immediately lands her in a fleshpile with ten other nude lasses at a stag film audition; later exploits bring her in contact with a sleazy psychiatrist who’s both exhibitionist and voyeur and a lesbian pick-up artist who sends Alice into a vibrator-induced trance. The girl’s erotic adventures are interrupted by confessionals from various members of an Obscene Phone Callers Anonymous support group, and by Ondine narrating while a naked man lies on his desk."

ZETA ONE (1969) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-zeta-one-1969/): "[The flashback has] geometric futurist sets decorated in bold primary colors, lots of those lava lamp/kaleidoscope freakout psychedelic effects (often incorporating nude women into the hallucinatory tableaux), and an army of kung-fu alien babes in bikini bottoms, pasties and pageboy wigs. The wraparound movie just has a smarmy would-be Bond lying in bed with naked women reminiscing about exploits he was not involved in in any way."

DIRECTOR RETROSPECTIVE: JAMES WHALE, PART 2 (http://366weirdmovies.com/director-retrospective-james-whale-part-two/): "Unquestionably one of the great directors, Whale, as he probably preferred, went out with a whisper."-AE

Title: Re: June @ 366 Weird Movies: HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE; FROGTOWN; Readers' Choice
Post by: Rev. Powell on June 21, 2013, 03:50:49 PM
A couple of weeks worth:

HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE (2004) (http://366weirdmovies.com/146-howls-moving-castle-2004/): Certified Weird! "The castle is a random assortment of turrets, gangways, girders, smokestacks, and bat wing fins, with cottages attached at various points, lurching along precariously on mechanized chicken legs like some replica of Baba Yaga’s hut commissioned by a mad steampunk billionaire."

HELL COMES TO FROGTOWN (1988) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-hell-comes-to-frogtown-1988/): "Frogtown is every thirteen-year-old boy’s ultimate fantasy: it’s like a summer vacation full of adventures, girls, and occasional frog-gigging."

READER'S CHOICE POLL - PICK TWO MOVIES TO GO ON THE LIST OF 366 (http://366weirdmovies.com/our-fourth-readers-choice-poll-pick-two-films-to-make-the-final-list-of-366-weird-movies/): Vote!

MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGE (1932)/THE MUMMY (1932) (http://366weirdmovies.com/murders-in-the-rue-morgue-1932-and-the-mummy-1932/): "After the successes of Dracula (1931) and Frankenstein (1931) Universal Studios and Carl Laemmle, Jr. became anxious to produce vehicles for Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff."-AE

THE RAMBLER (2013) (http://366weirdmovies.com/list-candidate-the-rambler-2013/): "The Rambler is sure to be marketed as a surrealistic horror film, which is a shame. I think people will enjoy this druggy road trip through the Weird West more if they go in with the mindset that they are attending a black comedy with horror bits."

MONSIEUR VERDOUX (1947) (http://366weirdmovies.com/monsieur-verdoux-1947-criterion-collection/): " The film opens with Verdoux’s voice-over narration from his tombstone, immediately indicating that what is about to unfold is far from the dance of the dinner rolls." -AE

ALICE IN WONDERLAND (1986) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-alice-in-wonderland-1986/): " With so many competing interpretations of 'Alice in Wonderland' out there, it’s difficult to find a compelling reason to recommend this straightforward adaptation that originally aired as four separate episodes on British television."

A NOISY DELIVERY (2013) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-a-noisy-delivery-2013/): " Although A Noisy Delivery is not a bad movie, in the sense that I don’t believe it actively sets out to hurt the viewer, I can’t imagine anyone I know who would want to watch it. I even have to stretch my powers of imagination to come up with a hypothetical viewer who might enjoy it."

Finishing up the month:

TOYS IN THE ATTIC (2009) (http://366weirdmovies.com/list-candidate-toys-in-the-attic-2009/): "Vivian Schilling, who voiced Buttercup, also wrote the English translation, directed the American voice actors, and designed a new title sequence. Schilling was previously best known for writing and starring in the laughable 1990 Joe Estevez sci-fi snoozer Soultaker. Ms. Schilling, consider yourself redeemed."

THIS MUST BE THE PLACE (2011) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-this-must-be-the-place-2011/): "The reason to see This Must Be the Place is Sean Penn’s high-concept, high-pitched performance as an emotionally stunted man-child serving a self-imposed sentence of early retirement while living off royalties from his pop star youth."

[youtube=http://366weirdmovies.com/requiem-for-the-relentless-fathers-2012-film-directors-statment/]REQUIEM FOR THE RELENTLESS FATHERS: Online debut of the 18-minute short film about King Saul.

THE SYNTHETIC MAN (2013) (http://366weirdmovies.com/366-underground-the-synthetic-man-2013/):"Imagine watching a really low-budget and serious (non-comedy) version of Gentlemen Broncos and you’ll have a clear idea of what it’s like to sit through The Synthetic Man. This is the third feature from John R. Hand, whose previous work I haven’t encountered yet—and I think I’ll keep it that way, judging from this latest effort."-LRH
