Title: The Asylum's "Dead and Dying" (aka Intermedio) (2005?)
Post by: BakuryuuTyranno on June 08, 2013, 12:32:05 PM
As long as I'm posting about an Asylum movie in the "good movies", I should say this - if Indianasmith is reading, you should watch their "Land that Time Forgot". Given that (a) you didn't like the "Land of the Lost" film, (b) that mockbuster has  better substance than "Land of the Lost", even Nazi soldiers are portrayed as human, and (c) like me you don't seem too fond of CGI, so the CGI quality probably wouldn't matter to you much.

Now for the thread proper:

I actually couldn't remember whether or not I enjoyed this and put it on rental list. By some coincidence it shows up shortly after I made that other Asylum thread.

Anyways-

The good:

- The big one is that quite unexpectedly given the reputation of The Asylum, they actually made a more original ghost-based horror movie than any Hollywood production at either the year or the years that followed.

- Whether original or rarely seen, there's the interesting idea of ghosts moving ridiculously fast, so they can put a pickaxe through your head and those with you won't even know what happened.

- The ghosts are actors with (usually) CGI effects over them, which, in horror, generally beats pure CGI.

- I suppose the gorehounds would at least the grisly wounds inflicted on the characters.

The bad:

- Unless you're generous and consider a couple of loud noises on the soundtrack (i.e. jump "scares") scary, there's nothing scary in the movie. Even if you're generous, there's nothing scary within the movie proper.

All things considered, it had interesting ideas, but was unremarkable. I'd consider it better than your average Hollywood horror dud from the time (Stay Alive, Pulse etc). It's nowhere near as good as the films from time that started the era of independant horror superiority, such as Saw, The Descent and Wolf Creek.

Intermedio was fun.  Cerina Vincent was kind of hot crawling around in the dirt and Edward Furlong was such a laughably wimpy little loser it was entertaining.

Land That Time Forgot is a minor favorite of mine.  Just a good B movie with likable characters that's cheesy in all the right ways.  The ending was actually kind of touching.
