Title: July @ 366 Weird Movies: JOHN DIES AT THE END, WALK AWAY RENEE, Alice, more!
Post by: Rev. Powell on July 05, 2013, 12:07:01 PM
Take a break from Summer Blockheadbusters with some weird movies!

KEYHOLE (2011) (http://366weirdmovies.com/keyhole/): Certified Weird! "From a Yahtzee playing ghost to a bicycle-powered electric chair to a phallic Cyclops guardian, the sights we glimpse through Keyhole horrify and titillate us. If nothing else, the peepshow satisfies our inner Freudian voyeur."

SUPERMAN ON SCREEN AND MAN OF STEEL (2013) (http://366weirdmovies.com/superman-on-screen-and-man-of-steel-2013/): "Despite his status as the oldest, most iconic comic book character, few seem to be able to do Superman justice when it comes to the big screen...There have been only two solid cinematic treatments of this solemn American myth: Superman and the Mole Men (1951) and Superman II (1980)."-AE

PHANTASM IV: OBLIVION (1998) (http://366weirdmovies.com/phantasm-iv-oblivion-1998/): "In the laziest opening sequence ever, Reggie Baldwin, who ended the previous movie completely helpless and obviously doomed, is released for no reason whatsoever by the Tall Man, who mutters something cryptic about it all being a game, and then spends the rest of the film trying to kill him in ludicrously over-elaborate ways."-OB

WILD STRAWBERRIES (1957) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-wild-strawberries-1957/): "... although Wild Strawberries is doubtlessly an excellent movie, I do find it a tiny bit overrated—but perhaps that’s only because it’s being compared to the author’s other masterpieces, like The Seventh Seal and Persona."

Title: Re: July @ 366 Weird Movies: REPO MAN, SWEET MOVIE, much, much more!

So much to get to...

REPO MAN (1984) (http://366weirdmovies.com/149-repo-man-1984/): "The movie argues for a lattice of coincidence, and it’s only coincidence that could bring together so many disparate elements and meld them into such a bizarrely, almost accidentally successful movie."

SWEET MOVIE (1974) (http://366weirdmovies.com/148-sweet-movie-1974/): Certified Weird by reader demand! "...no one wants to see Sweet Movie for its political philosophy. We want to see beautiful women writing nude in liquid chocolate, gold-plated penises, and uninhibited orgies that go far beyond our deepest desires."

SPIDER BABY, OR THE MADDEST STORY EVER TOLD (1968) (http://366weirdmovies.com/spider-baby-or-the-maddest-story-ever-told-1968/): "When a film opens up with a raspy-voiced Lon Chaney, Jr. ardently singing the title song, it almost comes with a guarantee of a weird trip ahead."-AE

DARK CITY (1998) (http://366weirdmovies.com/list-candidate-dark-city-1998/): "...a truly fascinating and visually stunning production that continually asks the question, 'what is reality?,' and does so in a far more sophisticated manner than the similar and much more popular The Matrix."-SS

WRONG (2012) (http://366weirdmovies.com/list-candidate-wrong-2012/): "Although there is an ongoing plot, and each character has a unique arc adheres to his or her own odd illogic, the movie is very digressive and inevitably feels a like a series of surreal sketch-comedy bits at times, almost as if Dupieux has been telepathically spying on the dreams of Monty Python cast members for ideas to fit into his dognapping script. "

THE ABCS OF DEATH (2012) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-the-abcs-of-death-2012/): "Rendered in a wild variety of morbid styles ranging from the avant-garde to the zany, these twenty six short films about death derive from a new breed of up and coming punk directors working in the diffuse genre that now loosely goes by the name 'horror.'"

THE THEATER BIZARRE (2011) (http://366weirdmovies.com/list-candidate-the-theatre-bizarre-2011/): " First-rate makeup, eerie sets and props, and racy, gory stories with unpredictable endings make The Theatre Bizarre a real standout in the genre of horror anthologies.:-PD

JUG FACE (2013) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-jug-face-2013/): "Falling into a trance, a simple-minded potter shapes the clay into the face of the Pit’s next victim, who is dispatched according to traditions handed down from generation to generation; if the process is subverted and the Pit doesn’t get what it wants, things get hairy for the townsfolk."

BRANDED (2012) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-branded-2012/): "Ironically, Branded is a protest about advertisers selling us shoddy merchandise that we don’t need, but the construction here is so flimsy, the 'deep message' so eye-rollingly obvious and over-sold, that we want to return the movie for a full refund."

COSMOPOLIS (2012) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-cosmopolis-2012/): "Cosmopolis can be as cold and clinical as the routine physical examination billionaire Eric Packer requires every day, and the results as odd as the importance the examining physician ascribes his asymmetrical prostate."

THE LONE RANGER, or, the Continuing Parody That Is Johnny Depp (http://366weirdmovies.com/the-lone-ranger-2013-or-the-continuing-parody-that-is-johnny-depp/): "...he film’s plethora of screenwriters serve up a thoroughly unentertaining mess. Erroneously thinking themselves clever and hip deconstructionists of naïve filmmakers past, their idea of entertainment amounts to an early heart-eating scene, and the protagonist being dragged through a pile of horse excrement. Amazingly, it goes downhill from there."-AE

Director Retrospective: Jean Cocteau (http://366weirdmovies.com/director-retrospective-jean-cocteau/): "Cocteau only made six movies, and insisted that he was merely an amateur who 'dabbled' in the medium. Despite his self-proclaimed amateur status, four of those films are frequently hailed as masterpieces of cinema."-AE

Whoops! What happened to the rest of July? Here it is...

JOHN DIES AT THE END (2012) (http://366weirdmovies.com/150-john-dies-at-the-end-2012): Certified weird! " Here’s an unexpected spoiler for you: John doesn’t die at the end of John Dies at the End. At least, I don’t think he does. But it may depend on how you define 'dies,' and how you define 'the end.'"

WALK AWAY RENEE (2011) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-walk-away-renee-2011/): " Avant-garde montages also intrude on the proceedings, utilizing layers of home movies edited into psychedelic backgrounds, meant to dislocate us inside Renee’s weaving brain. This process culminates in a kaleidoscopic trip through an umbilical wormhole connecting alternate soap-bubble universes."

ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS (1973) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-alice-through-the-looking-glass-1973/): "Aired by the BBC on Christmas Day 1973, this trip through the mirror really looks like a 40-year-old television show; that is to say, the budget is rock bottom."-SS
