Title: Britain will start blocking porn.
Post by: El Misfit on July 23, 2013, 11:56:04 AM
Saw this on another forum I go to (for gaming)
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/22/uk-blocking-porn-_n_3635247.html?ref=topbar (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/22/uk-blocking-porn-_n_3635247.html?ref=topbar)
Quote
Starting in August, the United Kingdom will begin blocking online porn, both in private homes and in public places, Prime Minister David Cameron said in a speech Monday.

A number of major providers that deliver Internet service to nearly 90 percent of U.K. homes have agreed to put in place "family-friendly filters" that will block porn sites by default.

"This is, quite simply, about how we protect children and their innocence," Cameron said, according to a transcript of the speech.

The good news for porn fans is that the filters are optional. Still, if users don't actively refuse them, they will automatically take effect.

But Cameron, who became prime minister in 2010 and is the head of the U.K.'s Conservative Party, isn't stopping at simply blocking online porn. He also spoke about a number of search terms that are so "abhorrent" they should be "blacklisted."

"There needs to be a list of terms ... that offer up no direct search returns," Cameron said.

He also said he was making it illegal to possess "rape porn" -- pornography that simulates rape acts. (Previously, only the publication of such materials was illegal.)

Furthermore, rules governing what kind of porn can be sold in shops will now apply to Internet porn, too.

"Put simply – what you can’t get in a shop, you will no longer be able to get online," he said.

Cameron called out Google, Bing and Yahoo by name, saying they had a "moral duty" to act on his proposals. He said that invoking the "free speech" argument was not acceptable.

In an email to The Huffington Post on Monday, a Google spokesman said, “We have a zero tolerance attitude to child sexual abuse imagery. We use our own systems and work with child safety experts to find it, remove and report it."

The spokesman added that the company "is committed to continuing the dialogue with the U.K. government on these issues."

WAT?

Why do you care?  It's optional.  As in...one can OPT IN or OPT OUT.  You thread title should read "Britain to OFFER porn blocking for those that want it."  Kinda less sensationalist, though, huh?

Why is this an issue for you or anyone else?  If you want your porn...turn the filter off.  Stop acting like it's some kind of crime that SOME people don't want it in their homes, even by accident.

Geez, this "default state = every scum-bag behavior should permeate every cubic micrometer of the earth" mentality is irritating.

I miss the days when there was at least the semblance of "class" instead of this modern mentality of seeking the lowest common denominator in EVERY thing.

Well the British govt' made sure they found a way to get all the peoples' guns a few years back, so now they need another thing to pick on.  Sure, I agree that thing like rape or some other truly sick stuff should be blocked, but porn in general, NO.  Either that or it's an emergency move to stop the lost Prince Charles\Camilla sex tape to be stopped before it pops up on some rogue site  :bouncegiggle:

All I can say to the news is "Oy".

This is sounding like South Africa between 1963 and 1993 where if you were caught with a so=called 'undesirable' publication, film or video you had one of two choices: a heavy fine, a jail sentence and in extreme cases, both.  :buggedout:

'Police state' was correct for the apartheid years but since 1994, things are good as far as personal freedoms go.

Then why keep responding to these types of posts?

The reason why this is newsworthy is because the default porn filter in the U.K. is now put in place by the government. Sure you can opt out of the porn exclusion, but now you have to call up a government agency to let you do so. Why should the U.K. government, or any government, have any say in what I look up online?

If I want to look up bare boobies online, and yes I do want to look that up all the time, why should I need permission? Put in that perspective, yes it seems incredibly invasive and newsworthy.

Look, my prurient tastes are about as vanilla as you can get. But I'll be damned if I ever have to ask permission from a government agency to do so. That's f**ked up.

You know, I wasn't very concerned about this stupid U.K. Firewall idea because I don't live in the U.K.

But you know who've they've decided to put in charge of this absolutely stupid filter? China (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23452097)!

I think it's kind of weird that nation of one billion people still doesn't have good access (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jun/04/tiananmen-square-online-search-censored) to information regarding one of the most iconic images of the 20th Century (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tank_Man).

You know, if I was a more cynical person, I might view this idea as having less to do with protecting children from the reason we are alive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_reproduction) than it has to do with control of information. Attempting to control access to information is pretty much the litmus test for a tyrannical government. Thankfully, this isn't what Cameron says he's trying. Sure, it's an unfortunate by-product, but if you can't trust low-level government employees to monitor what's right, who can you trust?

That IS strange... it’s an ominous feeling.

I personally think this is a good idea for those who chose to participate. As for the "free speech" argument,I must admit to being ignorant as to how this works in Britain. Do they have it like it is here? Because I don't think that it should apply to lewd photos, especially of children. However,as I stated I'm not sure how the law works there. Of course, there is also the argument that "lewd" would be in the eye of the beholder but I see nothing decent in using children to sexually stimulate an adult. I also believe that the world is deteriorating morally but if you forced this filter on someone who didn't want it then what stops them from continuing to filter things, based on one small group's opinions? That could turn into a domino effect that errodes even simple rights. Yes....let those who want it take it but also try and save our children from being dragged into the sordid world of porn. As for those over the age of consent, well, make sure the ones participating are there of their own choice.

well, as the local badmovies UK resident I can tell you this entire story is a load of fish'n'chips because Internet service providers here have already been putting blocks in place for years.

When I set up my Internet account a few years back I found that nearly half the Internet was blocked (including this place believe it or not) because - in more or less the words of the blocking screen which came up  -"it may contain dangerous/harmful/pornographic material"

to unblock this filter, I didn't have to click a box, I had to phone up my service provider and kindly ask them to take the block off, and it took them about a week to do it. And it wasnt just my service provider that used this procedure, loads of others did too.

So basically this story is just David Cameron trying to make himself look like a moral guardian of the state to win more votes, not even realising his 'new measures' have already been in place for ages in most cases.

Well the British govt' made sure they found a way to get all the peoples' guns a few years back, so now they need another thing to pick on.

Sorry but I have to comment on this. I see this point being made a lot by US people. You make it sound like there was some big operation to make everyone in Britain surrender their guns - no one had any guns to surrender. trust me, no one here was ever owning a gun for 'protection'. A family did not have a gun in the drawer just in case of burglars. There has never been any protest in the streets of England with people chanting "Give us our guns back".

People over here who do have guns are the ones who would invariably keep them whether or not the government said it was okay or not.

Really, Ulthar?  You're going to do it again?  Why don't you just stay away and look at the myriad movie discussion threads on this "movie forum"  that could use your brains, insight, and good (but not great) writing?  This is not only the off-topic part of the forum, but also weird news stories.  You did the same before when I posted a stupid story in the weird news forum months ago.  Lighten up.  Or, for that matter, consider that you are old enough to be Bull's father.  Though frankly, you act like you could be his precocious little brat.
