Title: What are the dumbest things people do in movies?
Post by: VenomX73 on August 05, 2013, 08:08:15 PM
List some of your favorite DUMB things that people do in movies.

Here's my short list to start.

2012 The Movie - Woody Harrelson waiting at ringside for the Yellowstone Supervolcano to erupt!

Ghost Galleon (1974) - Noemi taking her time to put on high heels to run from Sergio. Not to mention the LOUD noise of her heels when running - it's what got her caught!

Paranormal Activity (2007) - Just about everything that Micah did in this move! Ignoring the psychic, teasing the demon and trying to communicate with it right after the psychic said NOT to.

What are some of your favorites?  :twirl:

One of the first things people do when they know a killer is on the loose is go their separate ways.

To add to the 'killer on the loose' scenario:

- go outside to investigate the screams/gunshots/monster noises

- run UPSTAIRS when being pursued by said killer

- bash killer over head with shovel/club/tire iron, and when killer falls unconscious, slowwwwwly creep over only to have the killer jump up and decapitate them

Might have the best example of all:

Vacancy (2007)

SPOILERS

A couple are confronted by one knife-wielding guy. Their options are either fight/get past him, or shelter in an inn where they KNOW snuff movies are being made. They, naturally chose option #2, because certain death trumps minor chance of getting stabbed in their eyes.

Worse, they survive, meaning the villains are even dumber than these morons.

Women in giallo films who generally NEVER fight back against their attackers.  They just sit in place and scream.  They might as well say, "okay, just stab me and get it over with".

Women who never fail to trip and fall when being chased. While I can understand that to a point why stay on the ground for way too long before getting up to run again?!?!

Most noticeable dumb thing = People screaming SHARK! and some lady starts crying holding her kid in 4 feet of water instead of trying to walk it out... everybody else hauled A$$.

EVIL DEAD 2013

Natalie going down the basement to see whats going on with Mia... AFTER ALL THAT HAPPENED within the last hour!

She is nekkid indeed: crawling around in the attic of her house.

As to watching it, read my review on here (the submitted reader reviews child board) and then you can decide.

Any female in any '50s horror movie who is frozen in fear when they see whatever is threatening them.  And anyone in a slasher movie who runs through the woods for 100 yards and then assumes they're safe.  Or like Archivist said, hit the killer over the head, knocking them out momentarily.  Then assume they're dead.  The end of Friday the 13th was probably the dumbest of all time in that regard.

Disposable guns.

Often in movies where characters are fighting for their lives with guns, you will see them throw the guns away when they run out of ammo. Why not keep it in the off chance that you can reload?!?

People who find a dead body, then pick up the murder weapon, getting the blood all over their hands & their fingerprints all over the weapon.

Or keep it for close combat. That's a pretty solid chunk of metal that you could bash against someone's head in a pinch.

I'm always astonished by the people who leave perfectly good weapons lying around on the ground during a crisis situation. Often enough an evil goon is defeated, leaving a machine gun unattended, but none of the "good guys" bothers to pick it up.

One that always struck me funny was the gal in Death Ship (1980) who took time out for a shower in the middle of the movie. Of course, since the ship is haunted, something horrible happens to her while she's showering. (I won't spoil it for those of you who haven't seen the film...but I will say that it's fairly underwhelming...).

I realize that it's a horror/exploitation flick and the only reason for that scene's existence was to fulfill the film's gratuitous-nudity quotient, but seriously.... who in the hell hops on board a decrepit, creaky 40-year-old derelict World War II ship in the middle of the ocean and then suddenly decides "Y'know what? I'm gonna take a shower!"??

I should add the screaming when someone tells them to be quiet to try to escape.

I don't think I can call going back for your friends dumb. Going back without a plan may be dumb, but going back for your friends? That's loyalty.

But none of the above are as dumb as your average teen or pre-teen male.

All one can say is "Stupid, if naive, and thus liable to make the wrong decision."

"Lair of the White Worm"
Allowing himself to get into a car with a strange, sexy woman and having her take him to her home and drowning him in the tub.

"L'Anticristo"
Allowing himself to be lured away from his school group by a strange, sexy woman and having her take him into a deserted corridor in the catacombs in Rome and breaking his neck.

"Troll 2"
Allowing himself to follow a strange, sexy woman into a mobile home and turning him into popcorn.

"2020 Texas Gladiators"
And just because.

It works, because we know that teenage and pre-teennage  boys, especially those that are still virgins, in a film always think with their dicks instead of their brains.

On the other hand . . .

Nothing more needs to be said. That is just gilding the lily, senseless padding, and does not work. Such as in Anne Perry's "Bluegate Fields" and the TV series on BBC America "Broadchurch."

Honestly, if this comment appeared virtually ANYWHERE other than this forum, people would think you had lost your mind.

I've seen that movie, and I still doubt my sanity.

One of my favorites is why does everyone flip the sunvisor in a car to look for the keys, and what freaking MORON actually leaves keys in that place to begin with?

Entertaining the belief that they can commune with or appease the monster.

See Jason X: "It's ok, he just wanted his machete back!"

women: invariably having eyes closed for the entire duration of a shower. perfect for 'whatever' to creep into the room unnoticed

men: (policeman/detective) dabbing at a suspected illegal substance and tasting it to see what drug it is! NB only men are allowed to do this, never women.

Ozzymandias speaks: Two things that have been parodied in comedy films.

Both Austin Powers and an episode of the Man from UNCLE pointed out that villains in spy movies tend to try to kill the hero with an elaborate but inefficient and awkward way that the hero will ultimately escape. Usually involving a conveyor belt.

Young Frankenstein parodied another stupid move by characters: putting a living monster or creature on display in front of a huge audience. The most famous was King Kong, where it doesn't seem like such an obviously bad idea. However, Revenge of the Creature features the stupidest variation on this.

"Hey, lets see if we can wake this creature up in front of several families in a water park."

"Will we need a protective partition between the audience and the creature?"

"Nah, what could go wrong?"

Ozzymandias has spoken!!

I thought of a more legit one that always bothers me when I see it:

The leader of the gang instantly placing his full trust in the new guy, whom he has every reason to suspect of being a cop.  Usually, this goes so far as the gang leader demoting his second-in-command to replace him with the new guy and allowing the new guy to date a female who is close family or close friend.

The Fast and the Furious is a great (?) example of that idiotic trope.

The other gang members going along with it may be even stupider yet.

I've noticed a little pattern in some (not all) vampire movies.  So we know, or learn, that the vampire is vulnerable ALL DAY as he sleeps in daylight hours, and if we can find where he is, we can waltz into his tomb around noonish and stake him.  But no.. there's always a day-long trip, or some obstacle and they always get to the tomb a few minutes before sunset, and no one thinks to just hightail it out of there and come back in the morning, they always have to try to go for it and end up in a brawl or vampire breakfast.  I'm more accepting of these situations when there's a manservant lurking about the tomb all day trying to ward off potential stakers, or a booby-trapped labyrinth leading to the tomb making it time-consuming to get there, but there usually isn't.

That or somebody on foot is getting chased by a car and they always run down the middle of the street.  No, don't duck into the entryway of a building, or run into the woods where the car can't follow.
