Title: That movie was an Oscar nominee?
Post by: The Burgomaster on August 16, 2013, 02:14:55 PM
Many people know that movies like SCHINDLER'S LIST, THE GODFATHER, ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, FROM HERE TO ETERNITY, and LAWRENCE OF ARABIA were nominated for (and won) multiple Oscars.  The object here is to compile a list of movies that we often forget (or maybe we never knew) were nominated for one or more Oscars.  Maybe they didn't win . . . but they were nominated.  Here are a few nominees to get us started:

* THE KARATE KID - Pat Morita, Best Supporting Actor
* GREASE - "Hopelessly Devoted to You," Best Original Song
* DUNE - Best Sound
* THE TOWERING INFERNO - Best Picture; Fred Astaire, Best Supporting Actor; plus 6 additional nominations (and it won 3 Oscars!)
* THE LONGEST YARD - Best Film Editing (and I'm NOT talking about the Adam Sandler remake, for the love of God!)

I couldn't believe that the IMO inaccurate crapfest known as Invictus was nominated for two Oscars.  :buggedout: :buggedout:

Just to be fair, it is quite a stirring film but I think my dislike of it stems from the pre-production days of it when I was sent an email, the writer of which spent two thirds of a two page email telling me the duties of a property master.  :twirl:

I'll give you a film that not only was nominated, but actually won not 1 Oscar, but 2 Oscars. Probably the worst multi-Oscar winner in the history of the Academy, and I give you . . .

1967's "Doctor Dolittle" which won Oscars for . . .
Best Effects, Special Effects
and Best Music, Original Song

The Academy was not the only one that got taken that year, so were the Golden Globes, which not only gave it 2 Golden Globes for its acting, but a Golden Globe for being the Best Motion Picture in the Musical/Comedy category. Oddly enough, or maybe not, while the film was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Original Song, it lost to "Camelot" for "If I Ever Would Leave You."

"Bad Grandpa" or aka "Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa," I always thought was an odd case, as I know a lot of people were rooting for it to win the Oscar for Best Makeup. It lost to "Dallas Buyers Club," as I haven't seen either film, I cannot say which one deserved to win.
