Title: MAGIC MAGIC (2013)
Post by: indianasmith on August 20, 2013, 07:29:26 AM
This is one of those movies where the trailer is a bit misleading.  I really debated as to which forum to put it in, but because I wound up being disappointed in the final product, I am nudging it over here to the Bad Movie side.  Here is the premise:

Alicia (played by Juno Temple) is a nervous young American student going to visit her cousin Sarah (played by SUCKER PUNCH's lead, Emily Browning, who I barely recognized without the blond wig) in a rural region of Chile.  There she meets Sarah's boyfriend Augustin and his American pal Brink (Michael Cera in a rare dramatic role).  No sooner than they arrive, Sarah is called back to Santiago for "school business" and Alicia is left alone with three people she does not know, who live on a remote island off the Chilean coast.
Here is where the disconnect comes in.  Sarah thinks that her hosts are a trio of evil sadists,  out to torment her physically and emotionally.  But are they really?  Or is her fragile grip on reality being broken by the stress of being alone in a strange country with people she does not know?  As insomnia robs her of emotional stability, the truth becomes harder and harder to know for sure.
This is a very dark film, with little or no comic relief throughout.  While it is well done, it is ultimately a frustrating exercise in cinema - some very talented people trying to make a statement, but making a mess instead.

Thanks for the warning, but I'm still probably going to end up seeing it. This same team made two movies while Michael Cera was in Chile. I'm going to see the other one (CRYSTAL FAIRY AND THE MAGIC CACTUS) today. CRYSTAL FAIRY got better reviews than MAGIC MAGIC.
