Title: FRANKENSTEIN'S ARMY (2013)
Post by: indianasmith on September 22, 2013, 10:21:37 PM
This one came out on DVD this weekend and I rented it Friday night, although I didn't watch it till this evening.  This movie combines zombies, steampunk, the classic Frankenstein horror motif, and gritty World War II drama in a combination that not only works but contains some of the most grisly images I have ever seen captured on film.  The carnage that the soldiers wade through in the opening sequences, as they make their way to the secret German lab, is a chilling reminder of the cheapness of human life on the Eastern Front as Hitler's Germany reaped the whirlwind he had sown in 1941.
The basic plot is that a group of Russian soldiers, answering a distress call from another unit, discover a deserted village, strangely mutilated corpses, and then a factory full of shambling horrors that are part man, part machine, powered by electricity, and animated by the insane genius of Victor Frankenstein.  Some of the creatures are truly horrifying.  Their lumbering singleness of purpose reminds one of The Borg from STTNG, but these creatures are far more primitive and horrifying than any Borg drone.
The plot is a little thin in places, but this movie contains so much horrific steampunk zombie eye candy that the plot is purely secondary.  This movie is an absolute MUST SEE!!!
