Title: The Best Bad Movies For PARTIES...
Post by: Puma81 on October 09, 2013, 10:11:08 PM
It takes a certain kind of bad movie to entertain a group of people, because everyone has their own tastes in Bad Movies.

In my opinion, here are the 4 criteria for a BAD MOVIE PARTY...

1. A FAST PACE (Too many pre-1985 movies are nothing but SNORE FESTS with nothing happening between scenes. Keep the party going.)
2. CONSTANT BAD ACTING (Nothing makes a bad movie as entertaining as consistent bad delivery.)
3. TERRIBLE WRITING (It's not fun unless you are saying "wait... WHAT!? The more over-the-top ridiculous, the better.)
4. UNINTENTIONALLY FUNNY (If it's not a sincere attempt at quality, it's not a glorious failure.)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here are some examples of what I would consider The Best Bad Movies For Parties...

1. Riki-Oh
2. Birdemic 2
3. Miami Connection
4. The Room
5. Hard Ticket To Hawaii
6. Deadly Prey

-------------------------------------------
If you know of any other ESSENTIAL Bad Movies For Parties please share them bellow.

The world needs your expertise, and it's tough to find a true Bad Movie Party gem.
Thanks everyone!

'Chopping Mall' springs to mind. I've stuck that on with a few people round and everyone enjoyed it. It's fun, it's corny, it has babes and robots, not too intense/gory... goofball classic.

The Fist of the North Star has already been reviewed by Andrew on this website. I remember my friends and I playing the movie at parties at my buddy's house back in the day. It meets all the qualifications listed in the OP.

I also nominate Bachelor Party, that old Tom Hanks vehicle from 1984. Certainly one of Tom Hanks' "finest" early films. Man, the '80s were certainly cheesy. Hardbodies is another great bad movie from that year. Andrew should give that one a quality review sometime as well!

BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS and ABRAXAS are both pretty brilliantly stupid.

I DO want input. That's the whole point of making a post like this.
I'm also entitled to having an opinion as much as you are. If you don't like opinions, then forums may not be your cup of tea.

Thanks for referring to me as a "princess" though. I think defining me as such, just for pointing out what I feel like is a neglect for the "criteria" mentioned in this thread, seems very warranted.
You're really awesome and mature. Thumbs up!

Cool As Ice
Microwave Massacre
Demons (not BAD in my book, but a fast paced gore fest)
Truth Or Dare: A Critical Madness
Rock N' Roll Nightmare
Maniac (1980) (again, not BAD but it seems to work well with a group of friends)
A Serbian Film (just to see the first time viewvers reactions)

Troll 2, Plan 9 From Outer Space, The Room, Robot Monster, Bride of the Monster, Hobgoblins, Glen or Glenda and Birdemic were big hits at the bad movie parties I've hosted. I'm guessing Sharknado and Birdemic 2 would as well.

I don't really want to intervene much, but I just wanted to point out that the picture in your avatar says "Holly", which is a girl's name. So the "princess" nickname seems rather fitting.

Maniac (1980) (again, not BAD but it seems to work well with a group of friends)

Really? I think this would fall down quite badly in the 'Fast Pace' and 'Unintentionally Funny' categories, being that it's a gruelling slog through the gradual mental decline of a twisted serial killer. Decent movie, but I would probably stick this on if I wanted to get rid of stragglers at the end of the night, lol

Although it's not 'Unintentionally Funny' The Forbidden Zone has always gone down really well with various groups of my friends. I also used it for visuals at one of my rockabilly club nights. People just sat there watching it even without sound.

You might try Ken Russell's "Lair of the White Worm" from 1988. It has a little bit of something for everyone.

For the gals . . .
Hugh Grant in one of his first starring film roles as one of the heroes.

For the guys . . .
A smoking hot Amanda Donohoe as the villainess.
You ought to see what she does to the boy scout, when he is in her hot tub of evil. Let me just say that there have been couples who have been known to recreate that scene and the previous scenes with him, from the time she picks him up thumbing a ride in the rain to the wet conclusion.

Also . . .
Peter Capaldi, the other hero, who is now the newest Doctor Who.

And . . .
Catherine Oxenberg, as the virginal heroine, who has to be saved by our heroes, while she's wearing her Marks & Spencer's undies.

If possible, get the dvd version with the director's commentary track. After showing it to a group of friends, they now realized why the film is really a brilliant masterpiece.

Reviewed at this website.

I don't want to speak for ChaosTheory (whenever someone says that, it means they are about to anyway), but I would presume that he wasn't taking issue with you disagreeing with the opinion.  It was the WAY that you said it that seemed harsh (after you asked for help):

Must just be me. I don't mind people disagreeing with me, or telling me about it. Didn't expect so many people to get their panties bundled up. Also, seemed like some pretty hypocritical name calling there.

Truth be told. I really don't give a crap. I don't think I've found a single recommendation that I've appreciated from this forum. I don't know if it's a difference in age, taste, or just plain IQ. I don't feel like I've met anyone on this forum that shares my tastes in bad movies, and it's frustrating when you throw out a line and all you keep reeling in is absolute garbage. Say what you want. I'm over it.

It still doesn't change the fact that people were TRYING to help you.  Again, it doesn't matter if you tell us that you don't like our choices.  Fair enough.  But, you chose to do so by being rude and incredibly harsh (and, getting even worse in the post I'm replying to now).  You asked for some suggestions and people threw them out there.

Who called you a name before you got rude?  The princess thing CERTAINLY came after your rudeness...

Again, fair enough that you haven't found any good suggestions on this forum, but I don't understand the animosity about it.  People tried.  Taste in film is subjective, so we're not all going to like the same things.  Maybe it is age or taste (c'mon - you didn't have to suggest IQ), but I have a hard time believing that NO ONE on this forum shares your tastes in bad movies.  There probably aren't too many bad movies out there that have NOT been mentioned somewhere on this site.

Maybe I missed something, but for you to get so angry so quickly at people's movie suggestions seems irrational...

If all you get is garbage, then perhaps it's time to pack up, cancel your username, and move on.  Everyone here is pretty friendly in their attempts to talk and recommend bad movies, so it might not be a good fit for you...

In other news [party bad movies]

A few friends and I are going to watch Sleepaway Camp tomorrow night.  For fun, I'm thinking of playing a few trailers before hand and would love some suggestions.  I have a small list of potentials but thought I'd throw it open to ideas.

Was thinking of showing trailers of movies I'd like to show them for next time, or just plainly hilarious trailers that would suit as well.

So far I'm thinking, Chopping Mall, Birdemic, Miami Connection and Slumber Party Massacre as potentials.  Any others worth throwing into the mix?

The trailer for "The Burning" is a fun one and it would pair well with Sleepaway Camp. It is the inspiration for the mock trailer for "Don't" in "Grindhouse."  I may be partial, but the trailer for "Slaughter High" is also always a fun one (and, would keep with the slasher theme of your main feature).

Grindhouse is always fun at parties. Though it might not seem like it at first glance, Death Proof has a lot of drinking in it, a lap dance, hot chicks, spectacular car crashes, and Kurt Russell getting his ass handed to him by three hot chicks. Plus in the special features on the blu ray, a wonderful a cappella performance by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who in another life should have been a singing diva; what a beautiful and passionate voice that broad has! It made me almost forget that stinker version of The Thing (2011) that she starred in. Almost.

I am uncertain why you seem so rude in your replies as well.  JayJay's initial reply to you was helpful and very polite in tone.  From there you go to this, and the thread goes downhill from there.

People do have different tastes in films.  It's strange that none of the suggestions interest you when your initial post of party movies has a decent variety.  Your list is almost all action films set in a contemporary setting.  I would suggest trying US Seals II, Singham, Day of the Warrior, Feast, Dead Alive, and Master of the Flying Guillotiine.  The last is the least likely for you to like, because it is an older setting.

Over the years I have noticed that some movies will work with one group, but fall completely flat with another.

EDIT: Just so we're clear on this, I loved this movie when it first came out in the movie theaters, but it did not age as expected with time. What was initially a serious look at life in the 'hood, became quite funny as the years went by, and can now easily be classified as a Comedy-Drama. I mean, really...

Streetfighter:  the movie.  It's fairly hard to top Raul Julia and Jean Claude Van Damme.
Army of Darkness
Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger Part IV
Blood Sucking Freaks
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Almost anything with Jackie Chan (although I'd suggest Project A and Armour of God)

Grindhouse is indeed a great experience, with that trashy 70s film look and the fake trailers in between. Death Proof didn't do it for me though. I loved Planet Terror because of how over-the-top and out of control it all was, but Death Proof just bored me with the endless dialogue scenes. The car crash and end chase were good though, and Kurt Russel is entertaining as usual.

Definitely agree with THE ROOM, HARD TICKET TO HAWAII and CHOPPING MALL. My brother actually hosts a Bad Movie Club that meets up once a month to watch the best cinematic garbage around. So far we've watched those, BATTLE TRUCK, AMERICAN SAMURAI (fell asleep during this one), CLASS OF 1984 (an enjoyable b-movie), and a few others.

This month we're celebrating Black History Month with a screening of BLACK GESTAPO and also Valentine's Day with a viewing of the romantic comedy flop GIGLI. Haven't seen either but looking forward to it.

Cheesy action movies are always fun and thanks to the magic of Youtube, there's plenty of full-length stinkers around for your viewing pleasure. Just put "Lorenzo Lamas" and full movie into the search bar and you're guaranteed a night of schlocky mindless entertainment. BOUNTY TRACKER was a particularly fun one.
