Title: who can help me find some good horror titles?
Post by: Stonieboi on October 10, 2013, 04:35:11 AM
I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right place, but I need help coming up with some good horror b-movies to watch with the family this month. Any suggestions? Between the late 70s to early 90s please. Thanks!

I'm thinking you'll get more responses here in the "bad movie" section.

Tough to know what you might like, but maybe some of these relatively family-friendly, relatively good movies from the 1970s:

HORROR EXPRESS (1972) - Evil head on a trans-Siberian train
Some of the later Hammer movies with Chrsitopher Lee and/or Peter Cushing
The Abominable Dr. Phibes (http://www.badmovies.org/movies/phibes/)

thanks! I love all horror, I was really hoping someone would name some movies I probably wouldn't remember on my own.

I rather like John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness. Pretty creepy, if you ask me.

If you'd prefer something more in the bad/silly column, look for Ghosts of Mars.

The Final Terror
Maniac (1980)
Burial Ground
Don't Look In The Basement
Rituals
Shock Waves
Deathdream
Shivers
Rabid
The Brood (yes I'm a 70s era Cronenberg freak)
Offerings
Who Can Kill A Child
The House With Laughing Windows

He was looking for movies to "watch with the family," though, so I thought he was looking for softer PG-type horror movies.

If that's true and this person is looking for softer PG titles, I should warn him (and you, dear viewers) that you if you decide to venture Beyond The Door, you do so at your own risk...

My bad. Shock Waves and Don't Look In The Basement would fit the bill nicely as far as "soft" horror goes. I highly reccomend The Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane - not quite horror, but a great little suspense flick that the kids may like. Also Let's Scare Jessica To Death and Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark (original natch) are great too.

The original Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark, GREAT movie!  Many nights as a kid were spent sleepless (even though we had 4 or 5 of us in the same room) and to this day it no longer affects me, but is more of a fond look back at what was an all-around fun time in my life.  Now, the movie I posted about just prior, Beyond The Door  STILL seriously scares me to this day to the point that just watching that TV spot sent about 2 minutes of shivers up my spine with about a million goosebumps as a side order!  :buggedout:

I didn't find THE FOG to be particularly bloody; that might fit the bill.
Also,
THE CHANGELING
BURNT OFFERINGS
POLTERGEIST
TRILOGY OF TERROR
ASYLUM
VAULT OF HORROR
Are all PG-13 or so worthy.

HELLNIGHT with Linda Blair was good.  Great suspense, no nudity, some language.

I'll second THE CHANGELING.
Another good one, especially if you have younger kids, would be the 1960 version of THIRTEEN GHOSTS.

The Monster Squad. Great family horror.

Couldn't agree more.  If you are talking about watching it with a family that includes young ones, the I think The Monster Squad is probably the best family horror film.  So good...
