Title: What's everyone giving for Christmas this year?
Post by: bob on December 08, 2013, 11:05:04 AM
I'm giving my dad Batman Begins and Django Unchained.

My brother is getting Criterion Collection editions of The Killing, Paths of Glory, M and Ikiru.

My mom will be getting an air pump for her bike.

Every year my family swaps each others names on Thanksgiving from a bag. On the name is  al ist of suggestions for that person. I drew an uncle who will either be getting a Barnes and Noble giftc ard or a gift card for the local cinema.

I really don't know what I'm giving this year.  My sisters and I decided not to exchange gifts with each other this year.  For the past few years, we ended up buying each other gift cards . . . so what's the point?  It's like handing money around the room . . . everyone ends up with the same thing.  We decided that we would just buy gifts for mom and dad and then use the money we would have spent buying each other gift cards to get together and all go out to dinner.  Mom and dad will probably end up getting a lot of clothes and trinkets for the house.  But I've also been thinking about getting them an Internet-capable blu-ray player and a Netflix membership.  We shall see . . .

My oldest son just turned 11 and he's becoming interested in more "grown up" movies (i.e. stuff that doesn't have talking animals in it)... thanks to Netflix, On Demand, and the like he's really gotten into stuff like the Back to the Future films, Ghostbusters, the Tremors series, etc.

So the wife and I picked up a nice little box set of Ghostbusters 1 & 2 for him and the first "Percy Jackson" film ("The Lightning Thief.")

When my brother asked him what he wanted for Christmas, my son told him "I want SHARKNADO on DVD!" ... my brother actually called me later to ask if that was okay with me. I said "Sure, that's fine. He's already seen it twice on SyFy."  :bouncegiggle:

Got my wife a necklace.  Our daughter Anna wants a cappuccino maker, but so far all I've gotten her is a book called "A Christmas Carol and Other Christmas Writings".  She wants an iTunes gift card too.  For our daughter Molly I got a Honey Boo Boo calendar  :teddyr:  My wife will take her clothes shopping (probably ten times).  Our son insists on cash.  He's got about 300 check marks in the "naughty" column this year, but I suppose I could give him five bucks or something.

My dad's being a real pain, he's either already got or doesn't need everything I've suggested.  Mom's getting a Dressbarn gift certificate (my wife works there).

Just got Mom some Seahawks earrings.  Other than that I have to ask for ideas for my sister and Dad & Stepmom.

Food gifts!  I love giving food gifts!  Like gift basket stuff, not home-made cookies in a tin, though I'm not against them, they're just not my style, but I will happily accept cookie tins and gleefully gobble them up. I love getting food gifts too! The best thing about food gifts, is the person doesn't have to feel pressured to keep them like they might feel about other things, and if they choose to "re-gift" them, they have to do it shortly after receiving them so there's less risk for re-gifting to the person that gave it to them.

I've never signed anyone up for a fruit-of-the-month club type thing, but I've heard some people that get those complain that they hate it - what the heck?  So you don't want 8 grapefruits in March, then give them away and sheddup!

One year a friend of mine got one of those giant smoked sausages as a gift (I think it was a gag gift) and they gave it to me, and though I do like mini smoked sausages, I didn't really want a giant smoked sausage, but I was happy to get it because it was a giant smoked sausage and who can turn down a giant smoked sausage?  I was able to find it a forever home with my husband's uncle.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Really not giving much to anyone this year.  I really don't have the cash on hand to do so.

I picked up some small things for a couple people, but frankly, I'm not feeling it this year.  I don't even care if I get anything.  I'd rather spend the day at home in bed.
