Title: What things scared you as a kid? Or still do as an adult?
Post by: retrorussell on December 27, 2013, 06:58:53 PM
When I was a kid this game scared the bejeesus out of me:
OPERATION
(http://monkeyblogmonkeydo.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/operation-board-game.jpg)
Something about the angry look the patient had and the loud, jolting buzz when you touched the side terrified me up till I was about 10 or 11 or so.  I just could not deal with it.

Any little things that really got to you as a kid, or still do?

THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK.
My brother took me to see that movie when I was six, and the "bathroom scene" terrified me so much I didn't poop for a week!

I still can't really deal with big crowds.. or constantly having to be with people.

I was afraid of Santa as a kid.  And Donald and Mickey and Goofy at Disneyland.  Hell, anyone in a big suit looking for kids to hug or shake hands with would compel me to move quickly in the other direction.  I still don't like closeness with people, big suit or no.

I used to be terrified of ventriloquist dummies too.  Seeing the trailer for the movie MAGIC didn't help.

Ocular trauma in film horrified me for a long time.. first got a taste of it in my early teens from the movie HOUSE OF PSYCHOTIC WOMEN late at night at my grandparents' house.  Only recently have I been able to put it behind me.

Just merely looking at horror movie VHS covers or pictures on the back could be enough to scare me back in my early teens.. I was very squeamish about those movies back then.  Once I read a book on how special effects were made (written by Tom Savini himself!) the fear kind of went away.

I do not, nor have I ever, liked to drive.  I just feel very uncomfortable and tense.

The Thing (1982) gave me nightmares for two weeks when we first rented it in 1983 or so. The practical effects still creep me out even today, way more than the CGI remake/prequel did. I use it to scare the bejesus out of the uninitiated, like my wife. I traumatized my little sister with it when she was a little kid, to the point where even to this day at 30 years old, she still won't go near the movie.  :teddyr:

Depending on the situation I would occasionally be afraid of the dark as a kid, or deep water when swimming in some lake. Afraid something would bite my toes or grab my feet!
Because of my grandmothers old wives tales I was constantly afraid of getting meningitis or pneumonia in winter when not wearing a wool hat or thick jacket. Or that my intestines would turn blue and my stomach would burst from fermenting by eating cherries and drinking water in summer.

Back in the day we didn't have no fancy brain freezes in our Operation games.

Well of course he's freaked out, he's letting little kids touch him there. :tongueout: :tongueout: :tongueout:

Flying Roaches freaks me out, because of how many there were one night (at least 10 in my house)

Looking out of a window at night and having a face appear. That always scared me as a kid, and still freaks me out if done right in a movie. I'd probably be sporting drawers akin to Trevor's if it ever happened in real life. Especially since I live on the second floor! (Shades of Salem's Lot).   :buggedout: :buggedout: :buggedout:

Some elements from the Resident Evil games scared me when they were new.
Like the dogs jumping through the windows in the first game.
And the dogs in the garden maze in the 4th game.  You'd hear them growling/panting/running in the distance.. then BAM!  They're right in front of you!

The Beyond The Door TV spot.  This scared me badly as a kid and I admit that I still don't feel easy when I see it.

Toothpicks in baked goods.

We had a neighbor lady when I was a kid who loved to bake fancy cakes. The probelm was she held them together with a mouth-piercing array of tooth picks. After biting into one in sombody's birthday cake for years I could not eat cake or similar baked goods without checking it closely for toothpicks.

This part from Dawn of the Dead (2004) didn't really scare me, since I didn't find that movie particularly scary, just hella fun to watch. But I was always disturbed by the girl's unfortunate death-by-chainsaw for some reason. Probably because I wasn't expecting her to go out like that, and she looked like a fine piece of tail.

My mother and grandfather made me very paranoid around dragonflies.  They told me, when I was a kid, if you talked too much around them, they'd sew your lips shut.  I don't mind them nowadays but I still feel a bit on guard when I do see one.

My phobias when I was younger were quite irrational in nature. One such was this anti-piracy commercial that was seen on alot of UK video tapes during the final years of VHS. I think it speaks for itself.

I was unable to handle horror movies (other than really old ones) for a really, really long time, though I still would watch them.  Up until my later teens.  I read a book by Tom Savini on how special effects were done, and that pretty much told me "It's only a movie".  They don't scare me anymore.

Being rejected, abused and abandoned: those have happened to me too often.  :bluesad:

Losing my father to the civil war in my birth country: even to this day, I still panic when I see a police car stopping near me (Dad was in the Police Reserve) and last year, the taxi I was riding in was pulled over by a cop and I was searched and frisked. Lord knows why the taxi was stopped or why I was frisked. I had a major panic attack when I got home.  :bluesad:

The dark. I still sleep with a light on and also people that I don't know getting too close physically to me.

----------------------------------------------

On a more cheery note: things film wise that scared the crap out of me as a child:  :teddyr:

The scary scene in the McCloud episode Someone's Out To Get Jennie:  :buggedout: :buggedout:

The crash sequence / vision sequence in Baffled with Leonard Nimoy:  :buggedout:

The poster for Dead Of Night / Deathdream:  :buggedout:

The monster in Space 1999's Dragon's Domain episode:  :buggedout:

Lots of things: scary to be sure but remembered fondly.

The cavemen from the old Popeye cartoon.  No idea why.  But I grew up in a very large, very old house and every night in winter when the floors would 'pop' progressively and regularly when the steam heat came on, half-awake through my open bedroom door I would 'see' those cavemen slowly and inexorably marching up the staircase toward my room, chanting their song.  The 'pop's were their footsteps.  I thought they could hear my heart beating - and that it would stop, had to stop, it was pounding so hard.  I knew they had emerged from the dark closet under the stairs where there was a huge old iron safe. In my mind's eye I think they were more an amalgam of the Popeye cavemen and the guards of the Wicked Witch from The Wizard of Oz.  I never found out or imagined what they would do once they got to me - they just scared the spit out of me on their way up.   :buggedout:

The flying monkeys from the Wizard of Oz.  NOT comfy.  Also the scene where the witch appears on the cottage roof in the forest.  Yikes. Gut reactions, both.

I read Dracula (and Frankenstein) at the age of 10.  Since then I have not been entirely comfortable sleeping without the covers tucked around my neck.

I used to be afraid of turning off the basement lights and going back up the stairs.  Always felt something was RIGHT BEHIND ME.  Until the day I took a deep breath and forced myself to stop halfway up the stairs and dared it to grab me.  From that point on I never rushed up again but walked up slowly, very dignified.  Confidence was like a charm that both protected me and fed itself.  That was a very important lesson for me.

I am however very pleased that I have through conscious effort overcome my irrational fear of spiders.  I am not fond of the critters, but I can stand very close to one now and not get at all upset.  :hot:

The sound of a train late at night when it would blow its horn. It scared the crap out of me and I would have a hard time going back to sleep. I had some nightmares about it too.

And there was this man's voice that was deep sounding that would say "One moment please!" whenever the film would break or there were technical difficulties;that really scared me to death.I was growing up in Houston both the late 70's and early 80's when the TV station that's now known as CW 39,used to be 39 KHTV. In fact, I believe his voice was used for both some of the commercials and introductions for some of the cartoons when they began, like the old Bugs Bunny cartoons for example. It wasn't until some years later (in the 2000s), when I saw the actual man on a car commercial talking with that same deep voice. It made feel better seeing the actual person with that voice, because I wasn't scared of him anymore.

There was another issue I had with being scared of human skeletons all the time, even if it was just pictures of fake replicas. It was to the point that was trying to either hide from them or keep as far away from them as possible. One of the mean kids did things in the first grade to egg on my fear. I can safely say I have long since out grown the fear.

The TV industry was loaded with infamously scary closing logos back in the day, from companies like Screen Gems and Viacom. Believe it or not, there have been many logos scarier than that imo. I had my fears as well back in the day, I was not a huge fan of the roaring lions from MGM logos.

Speaking of those, whose brave enough to watch this in full screen in the dark?

I was rather young when the TV spot played on TV and it was like the NY stations delighted in playing the TV spot when it was time for kids to go to bed...i remember laying in bed with the hall light on when my parents were downstairs watching TV and every 10 minutes or so you'd hear 'Whooo-areee-youuuuuu" and for a kid that was scary!

Tame by today's standards? Definitely, but as a look back it conjures some goosebumps.

You have a little problem there with your quote UMARIL, but don't misunderstand me.  Yes, those BEYOND THE DOOR TV spots scared me too!!!  I remember that TV spot!!!  It was NANNY AND THE PROFESSOR JULIET MILLS and I was... young!!!   However, it was always NANNY, so, it got "better" as I got older and I've made fun of the thing many years.  That's why we have BADMOVIES.ORG because we LOVE these terrifically imperfect films.

Yeah I saw the error there, forgot to add the code for the quotes or something.  But yeah I agree with you 100% that we love these films because of what they brought to the bargaining table, and sometimes, the badder, the better!   I think the biggest thing scaring those of us old enough to remember, was seeing Nanny go from this loving, benign person to this raving depraved creature.

Much in the same way, the season one Lost In Space episode, "Follow The Leader" sees Prof. Robinson slowly coming under the influence of the spirit of a centuries-dead maniacal warrior who conquered the galaxy at one time. Watching Robinson go from loving family man to megalomaniac, with a shrinking window of opportunity for him to wrest himself free of the influence, was very scary, and also entertaining too!  Good talk

You'll have to excuse the lad, he's a bit put out that the final cut of Beyond The Door didn't have the long-awaited upskirt shot of Juliet Mills' tail as she was floating out the door. Yeah, that one affected a lot of us too  :twirl:

So many things when I was a kid....store dummies, mechanical fortune tellers, and believe it or not, octopuses; today, they fascinate me.

One that's carried over from childhood-I can't stand an uncovered window at night, the drapes / blinds MUST be closed.

Strange one....I can walk or ride a bike in practically any kind of traffic, but, even though I've known how for forty years, I cannot drive a car; I freeze up.

Just the random way anybody can die for any reason.

I was enthralled by the opening of Saving Private Ryan as anybody, how could you not? But the death that disturbed me the most was the one guy at the end trying to strap a "sticky bomb" on a tank and being liquidated when it exploded too soon.

But just as horrifying to me was the movie Affliction. This is a movie about a son who has lived under his father's browbeating for decades. After decades of browbeating he stands up to his father and punches him, but because his father is now a septuagenarian, it results in one of the most disturbing deaths I have ever seen on film.

I did se eboth movies and I gotcha' on both counts.  I think the horror of Affliction is a bit more disturbing because it shows that people have acted on impulse and caused something that can"t be taken back no matter how hard we want to reverse it.

I say this because with war, it's understandable that men will die in many different and terrible ways, but when you perform a single act that causes the result that you never expected (or wanted).

As a kid I was freaked by Event Horizon (1997) and as an adult TRULY HORRIFIED by almost every Gasper Noe film, namely Irreversible (2002)

As a kid (early 80's) - that scared the crap out of me. I remember that too well.

Actually any film that has the central character going psycho crazy and starts killing people because they are mentally unstable scares the hell out of me. These sort of movies scare me way more than the Monster flicks like Dracula and Frankenstein.

There's a short story by the late Richard Matheson, called Graveyard Shift, that scared the latkes out of me as a twelve year old, still scared me silly when I was thirty-three, and would probably still work on me at fifty-eight.

If you can find it, it's worth the search.

Things that creeped me out....and most still do:

Sleeping in a room with no drapes or shades

The voice of "Hal" from 2001:A Space Odyssey

The Snapping Turks from "Yellow Submarine"

The "FBI Most Wanted" they used to run late at night....I imagined they were just outside my house

My own imaginations scared the hell out of me when I was a kid.
I remember visiting a local museum with my class and they had a small part about witches etc. with some blurry photos and drawings.
That made me believe in your stereotypical evil witches so much, that I couldn't sleep all night and was scared s**tless. The thunderstorm that was happening that night didn't really help.
Same basically happened after watching the movie "Fire in the Sky" about Alien Abductions.

Nowadays there aren't really things anymore that can scare me. I still kinda believe in Aliens, Ghosts etc, but only because I like the idea, that there is something else outthere.

Another 2 good entries into the juvenile scare dept. for me were the original Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark which I got to see when it first premiered on ABC sometime around '73 or '74, and the original 1968 Night Of The Living Dead which I also saw at a young age.

Making it worse for me with NOTLD was the fact that the TV version on ABC 7 had the "dramatized" newscast and I was too young to know that that meant that it was fake even though the word 'dramatization" flashed on the bottom of the screen.  My dad was asleep on the floor next to me as I watched it, and I still was scared to death. And when the dead started smashing their way in at the end, I was afraid it might happen to me..

The face-peeling scene in V: The Original Mini-Series scared the crap outta me as a kid. Less so nowadays as an adult but that scene still impresses. In general transformations kind of freaked me out back then...remember I was scared by the computer-merger with the woman in Superman III too. Clowns definitely scare me too. Suspect they scare most everyone. The general atmosphere of parks after dark is spooky too especially creepy dead trees. Poltergeist was scary for the clown and the tree...even the TV...

The bed never felt so good, but I slept with the light on that night

My 11 year old self felt exactly the same

I think there's something to be said for sci-fi horror, it's possible that I am a fan of the genre because of this film. If this film was set in a church, abandoned mental hospital, etc etc it would not be as scary - the fact that this ship turns up after so long is in itself freaky. Also the concept that 'hell' could be some kind of extra-dimensional place freaked me the hell out (similar to Matter or Surface Detail by Iain M. Banks, I forget which been meaning to re-read)

Event Horizon is a truly great film, way ahead of its’ time and one that is winning a late but well-deserved revival and recognition on DVD……the film archivist that I am would however like to kick the film’s producers up the bum for destroying the edited footage instead of preserving it.

I can't remember if it's a 15 or 18 in the UK, I suspect 15. It annoys me that people cut out things just to keep the rating down. When I watched the Prometheus outtakes it was all just sex and drinking as far as I can remember - absolutely ridiculous, if the scene aides the story then DO NOT cut it out. I was not aware of any Event Horizon cuts but it really wouldn't surprise me.

The one thing ~ aside from the gory subject matter of Paul W S Anderson’s film ~ that disturbs me is how everyone’s eyes in the film seem to look, as though they were mirrors

Gore and visual FX in this film always gives me the creeps but I think in hindsight the pacing of the film is the worst thing for scare factor (like the prelude of the recording before they even get there and the bizarre video logs which would seem cliché and cheesy these days, maybe even back then I dunno). I feel when I watch EH that you are actually alone on that ship, the suspense is epic.

I have seen much better films probably even better horrors (horror is usually a lame genre of film imo, once you've seen Gasper Noe films or A Serbian Film SAW/general gore is laughable) but EH sticks in my mind for the cast, the pacing, the fx, the cool spinny thing (lol) and the general atmosphere of the film. It seems like a lot of films but isn't I guess is what I'm saying.

The first time I ever watched JEEPERS CREEPERS that movie scared the crap out of me.  Especially when they drive by the abandoned church and see the Creep dumping a body down the old shaft.

The sun. If you stare at it, it blinds you. If you spend too much time beneath it it burns you. Its flares cruelly disrupt the broadcast entertainment we all cherish. It's blamed for skin cancer, global warming, the lifeless state of Mercury and Venus, and one day it's going to go supernova and reduce our solar system to a toaster cracklings. I keep saying, we should destroy it before it gets the jump on us. I mean seriously, would you actually miss it all that much?

The grim voice of the announcers for horror film trailers would freak me out when I was young, especially when it came to them stating that the movie was rated R.  Same goes for cable rating bumpers.

Oh man, did that one take me back, brother! Staying up late on Friday and Saturday nights watching either Creature Features on WNEW 5 NY or Chiller Theatre on WPIX 11 NY and the horror movie trailers they displayed. And of course, these great trailers. Another trailer that scared me (but fascinated me at the same time) was this famous one that we all remember well:

NOTE: The end trailers are the European ones where DOTD was known as "Zombie".

I've read many Stephen King and other horror, but only one book managed to actually scare me as a young adult:

The first chapter is a real hair-raiser, and after that it was impossible to put the book down. Funny thing is, when I gave the book to friends and family to read everybody experienced the same scary feeling.

Hell yeah, now yer talkin'!
A couple more "No One Under 17 Will Be Admitted.." that brought me chills as a kid:

ZOMBIE (aka ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS and ZOMBI II)
ZOMBIE (1979) Trailer for the North American release of Lucio Fulci's zombie classic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHMduQIGxKQ#ws)
PIECES
Pieces Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A97EOtxF2gA#)
And the eyeball-carrying scenes from HOUSE OF PSYCHTIC WOMEN/BLUE EYES OF THE BROKEN DOLL used to really get to me.  Still fairly unpleasant.

My mother and grandfather made me very paranoid around dragonflies.  They told me, when I was a kid, if you talked too much around them, they'd sew your lips shut.

It would be cool if they actually did that  :bouncegiggle:
