Title: how many movie (Part 5)'s are there?
Post by: zombie no.one on January 03, 2014, 07:05:00 PM
how many movie franchises can we name that actually reached a Part 5/Part V?

- why?...I just get the impression once something has reached a "part 5" then it has surely run out of steam and is just scraping the barrel. 4 is pushing it, but 5 almost definitely means they're running on autopilot. I may be wrong in some cases in which case feel free to point it out

some I can think of:

Friday 13th Part 5: A New Beginning
Halloween 5
Rocky V
The Howling 5: The Rebirth
Puppet Master 5: The Final Chapter
Child's Play 5: Seed Of Chucky
Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach
- ok I have a soft spot for this, but it's not a 'good' movie
Saw V
Final Destination 5

added;
Fast & The Furious 5
Death Wish 5: The Face Of Death
The Dead Pool
(5th Dirty Harry)
Nightmare On Elm St. 5: The Dream Child
Children Of The Corn V: Fields Of Terror
Witchcraft V: Dance With The Devil
Silent Night, Deadly Night 5: The Toy Maker
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
Ghidrah: The Three Headed Monster
(5th Godzilla)
Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem (5th Alien (?))
You Only Live Twice (5th James Bond)
Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (5th Hammer Frankenstein)
Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man (5th Universal Frankenstein)
Taste The Blood Of Dracula (5th Hammer Dracula)
The Prophecy 5: Forsaken
Home Alone 5: The Holiday Heist
Diary Of The Dead
(5th '...Of The Dead')
Hellraiser 5: Inferno
Leprechaun 5: Leprechaun In The Hood
Harry Potter & The Order Of The Phoenix
(5th Harry Potter)
Tarzan's Secret Treasure (5th Tarzan)
Faces Of Death V
A Good Day To Die Hard (5th Die Hard)

Land Before Time V: The Mysterious Island
Scary Movie 5
Tomie: Saishuu-shô - kindan no kajitsu
(5th Tomie)
House Party: Tonight's The Night (5th House Party)
The Gods Must Be Crazy 5: The Gods Must Be Funny In China
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2
(5th Twilight)
American Ninja 5
Ju-On: White Ghost/Black Ghost
(joint 5th Ju-On)
Emanuelle 5
Emanuelle Around The World aka Confessions Of Emanuelle
(5th Black Emanuelle)
Sister Street Fighter: Hanging By A Thread (5th Street Fighter)
The Thin Man Goes Home (5th Thin Man)
Olga's Dance Hall Girls (5th Olga)
Charlie Chan's Courage (5th Charlie Chan)
Ringside Maisie (5th Masie)
Keep Em Flying (5th Abbot & Costello)
Sadako 3D (5th Ring)
Gamera vs. Guiron (5th Gamera)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003 remake) (5th Texas Chainsaw Massacre)

add on any you can think of...

Hm...there is also Fast & Furious 5 aka the Part where the franchise started to be fun. I liked the Japan-Setting of 3 (and the Introduction of my favourite Character of the Franchise - Han), but 1,2 and 4 aren't good by any chance.

Well, going by just reaching movie #5 and beyond..

There are 8 Harry  Potter films. Though I really can't attest to quality because I really haven't watched them all.

Both Godzilla and James Bond have movie franchises that reach into the twenties.  Although continuity could be questioned on them.  Speaking of which, the fifth Godzilla film is Ghidrah: The Three Headed Monster which introduces Godzilla's arch nemesis.  Its usually held high in the fandom.

And going by numbering or chronological continuity Empire Strikes Back is the 5th Star Wars movie, and its usually considered the best of the franchise.

Death Wish and Dirty Harry both had 5-movie franchises. However, the latter was much more successful when it came to producing sequels.

You could count AVP: Requiem as Part 5 of the Alien franchise.  (No, no, no, AVP couldn't be the fifth, because there never was a fourth film, called Alien: Resurretion.  Never.)

STAR TREK V THE FINAL FRONTIER was pretty good, IMO.

Hammer's Dracula and Frankenstein movies both had more than five sequels.

good point. not seen them either (just the odd 15mins here and there when they come on tv) but they're held in very high regard by a lot of people so I guess they go in the 'good movie' category. They all seem to be known by their full names as well i.e. "Goblet Of Fire" as opposed to 'Harry Potter Part 2' or 'Harry Potter V' etc...

And going by numbering or chronological continuity Empire Strikes Back is the 5th Star Wars movie, and its usually considered the best of the franchise.
Star Wars
Star Wars is a strange one. For the purposes of this thread I would say the Part 5 is the 5th one they made, not the one that is supposed to be the fifth chronologically in the storyline. What do you guys reckon?

thanks for the other suggestions, I'll add them to the list in the first post

do you know what both their 'Part 5's were called, so I can add them to the list?

(I'm guessing it's not Dracula Part 5 and Frankenstein V)

I noticed alot of Universal horror flicks back in the 30s and 40s had a good amount of sequels produced. Characters like Frankenstein, Wolf Man and Invisible Man usually spawned several sequels, some of those being crossovers with other monsters or Abbott and Costello.

I believe there are five films in  "The Prophecy" series, but I've only seen the first.

*edit: I just consulted my good friend Dr. Wik E. Pedia, and yep, the fifth film in the series, "The Prophecy: Forsaken," came out in 2005.*

I knew of 3, but was surprised that there are 4&5.

Also would the "of the Dead"-Series by Romero count? Then Diary of the Dead would be Nr.5 I believe.

Hellraiser has 9 movies total, with the fifth being Hellraiser Inferno.  It was also the first sequel in the franchise to go straight-to-DVD.

dang...some replies are now missing and my modified list hasn't got half the ones I added...

something to do with the server swap?

might try and fill them in again later. it was getting to be a pretty comprehensive list!

We lost about 12 hours of posts from what I can tell.  The server runs backups nightly, so it wouldn't have been more than 24 hours at max.

^ Tarzan that was it, thanks

I probably would include it, but according to one of the imbd reviews Part 5 is a compilation of 'highlights' from parts 1-4... so I don't think that counts. - or maybe I will, just cause by doing that they're blatantly milking it which was kind of my original point about 'Part 5s' :teddyr:

I hadn't seen it myself nor really read about it.. didn't know it was ripping off parts from its own series.  But yeah, numerous film sequels rip off "flashback" sequences from previous films (like Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2 and Boogeyman II).  I'll leave it to your discretion.

The Land Before Time was milked with about 12 straight-to-video sequels and a TV series, talk about overkill. Maybe they should have kept it at V and done the TV series earlier.

thanks, added... never even heard of these.

also added the fifth 'Guinea Pig' movie, which confusingly is called 'Guinea Pig 2: Android of Notre Dame'

anyone whose never heard of the Guinea Pig films, they're the ultra gory Asian flicks that Charlie Sheen reported to the FBI, believing them to be snuff movies! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guinea_Pig_(film_series)

From what I know, the first was quite dark and depressing at times, though the sequels went with a more family-friendly direction with lighter-hearted storylines and song montages.

According to IMDB the US-title is either "Going all the Way" or "Lemon Popsicle". You guys ever heard of them? There are 8 movies and one spin-off.

I had not heard of these movies!  The first was made in 1978 and is an Israeli film about 60s high school teens.  Sex, abortion and unrequited love are the prevalent themes.  Director Boaz Davison also directed the American film THE LAST AMERICAN VIRGIN and HOSPITAL MASSACRE (X-RAY).  The Golan/Globus team (who did a number of American films, including HELL NIGHT) produced the first film.  I will have to look for this!

About Sadako 3D.
There are:
Ring
Ring Spiral (Or Rasen)
Ring 2
Ring 0 (Or Birthday -> Prequel)
and Sadako 3D

The confusion comes from Ring Spiral I think. After Ring Spiral didn't work really well money-wise, they made Ring 2 to be the real sequel to the original and kicked Spiral out of the Series. So I guess you could argue if Sadako is actually the 4th or the 5th movie.

thanks. According to the wiki article, 'Keep Em Flying' is the 5th Abbot & Costello so I'll go with that.

At some point I might re-arrange the list into straightforward 'Part 5's, and then another section for debatable or less obvious ones like fifth "installments", or sequels that aren't directly related to the series, etc...

I'm wondering about the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series. There are 7 entries, but the 5th is actually the 2003 remake of the original. I wasn't going to count remakes as being sequels, however it's not a straight remake and some bits are different, also the next one ('Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning') is listed as being a prequel to the remake... so I guess, on that basis, I'll call the 2003 remake technically the 5th movie in the series. - unless any of you guys think otherwise...

this is all too complicated, haha

I am somewhat surprised no one has mentioned the Air Bud series of films and videos. There was . . .

Air Bud (1997)
Air Bud: Golden Receiver (1998)

The only two, as far as I know that played in theaters, and the only two that I saw, but they were followed by the straight-to-video . . .

Air Bud 3 (2001)
Air Bud: 7th Inning Fetch (2002)
AIR BUD: SPIKES BACK (2003) The 5th in the series
Air Buddies (2006)
Snow Buddies (2008)
Space Buddies (2009)
Santa Buddies (2009)
The Search for Santa Paws (2010)
Spooky Buddies (2011)
Treasure Buddies (2012)
Santa Paws 2: the Santa Pups (2012)
Super Buddies (2013)

Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment. If they can find a way to make some cash, they will do it. So, no doubt, we'll get another one this year.

As for "Star Wars," what do I reckon? I reckon I want to strangle whoever came up with that series of numbering. I worked for an organization that distributed dvds to the public, and we often got someone who came in and asked for the 1st "Star War" film. And when I asked by 1st, did they mean Episode IV or Episode I, they often had no idea. Actually, now I think about it. Strangling is too good for them. I'll have to think of something special, as making them watch the "The Star Wars Holiday Special," and call it justifiable homicide.

added your last suggestions too major j

found an article on ANNACONDA 5 earlier but it turned out to be a piece of fan fiction. they'd included a release date, plot, actors etc... why on earth would anyone do this, lol

so this thread is now on page 5... that clearly means it's run out of steam and should've been put to sleep already  :teddyr:

checked out a few "Air Bud" clips, I guess they never heard the old movie cliché about never working with kids or animals.

If you mean the Romero-ones...they have already been added. But you actually reminded me of two things.
1. There are two Zombie 5s (Killing Birds and Revenge in the House of Usher)
2. There are five Return of the Living Dead-Movies, but I don't know if Necropolis is Nr. 5 or Rave to the Grave.
