PUZZLED LOVE (2010) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1849844/)

See this movie.  I absolutely loved it.  4.5 out of 5.

Essentially an indie collaborative student film project, PUZZLED LOVE chronicles the one year-ish romance of two exchange students in Barcelona. Each month of the 13 months is a separate segment written and directed by a different (student or recent film school grad) director, so each month is shot in a separate style.  It's simply incredible that they could pull this off with anything like a coherent story, but how they pushed it further with a capturing, emotional drama ....

It's also a bit amazing that the lead actors could tie 13 different writer-directors into something akin to constant characterization...maybe not perfect, but at least one can believe they ARE the same characters.

There are two things, though, that really made this movie work for me.

First: The music is astounding in the way it integrates with what is on-screen; this is very well done.  I was particularly struck by the music being an organic element of the story for the "November" segment.

Second: The visual style of the story telling is the best I've seen in a long time.  The acting is part of this, of course, but the use of staging, blocking and set design pushes the visual story beyond what is typically seen in Hollywood "exposition it or they won't get it" formulaic fair.

Also, I loved the little way the other roommates accepted them as a couple.  I could just believe that all these people were such good friends in a way that did not seem like a "movie" at all.
