Title: Hello bad movie junkies, I have a question for you all
Post by: DrSimonCowell on February 17, 2014, 03:13:55 PM
Hello. all you crazy bad movie junkies who get highs from watching ridiculously pathetic movies.  But I know then terrible films aren't your only form of enjoyment.  I am sure some of you enjoy the theater (not the movie theater, mind you) and going to the arena to watch your favorite sports teams trash the visitors.  Well my question focuses on a form of entertainment some or all of you might have seen:  Stand Up Comics.

You know, those men and women who go on stage and tell things in a very humorous way to make us laugh (or try to.)

I would love to know who your favorite stand up comics are.

Mine?  Well lets just say two of my all time favorites are dead now.  One blew his brains out and the other died of old age.  You got it. Richard Jeni and George Carlin.  I have gone to a few of Carlin's shows and 2 of Jeni's shows.  I tell you. George was a stand up master.  I just loved his routine called Stupid things we say.  That one was all about expressions we say which sounded stupid like "The greatest thing since sliced bread" or "Tell us in your own words."

Alicobarus Nerocosassy.  There you go, I have said something in my own words.  Your turn!  LOL!!!

But in all serious, tell me about your favorite stand up comics as well as your favorite routines of theirs and what they talk about in them.

That is all, bad movie junkies.

Hello, Wyrewizard!!!

The funniest stand-up guy I ever saw was named Scott Jones.  He never made it big, as far as I know, but he put me on the floor holding my sides in hysteria for an hour and a half one memorable evening around 1988 or so.

Indiana, Indiana, Indiana, I am not WyreWizard.

I guess that is why I have never heard of Scott Jones.  What show did you see him on?  Star Search?

George Carlin is still my all time favorite stand-up comic. Damn, I miss that guy. Wish I'd had a chance to see him in person.

Denis Leary's No Cure For Cancer is another long time favorite stand up album. I can quote that thing chapter and verse.

Aw, come on, "Simon".  We figured you out with your first post!

But in answer to your comment about Scott Jones, he came to my college campus and performed for the student body.
He had a large rubber toy named "Sucker Man" that he incorporated into his act, and a slide show tour of America that I giggle
when I think about to this day.

We also got to hear Judy Tenuta (Tenuda? not sure on spelling) on our campus the next year.  She is one funny lady.

Ah!  Judy Tenuta, author of the Power of Judyism.  I can't remember what show I saw her on.  But in that show, I remember she played an according and called up 2 women to join her on stage.

I have a soft spot for this Jimmy "Dynomite" Walker album I used to listen to in college

Jimmie Walker: Dyn-o-mite - The Ghetto (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRbHuClKwa8#)

It's not great but a lot of fun

"I'm glad slavery is over. Otherwise, I'd be out in a field picking dacron or polyster or something"

I got to see George Carlin live many years ago and I laughed so hard my head felt like it was 'gonna explode! He was a real one-time deal, that guy!

Haven't been in contact with many american Standup-Comedians, but the ones that I watched and liked were Eddie Murphy and Pablo Francisco.

I think Bill Burr is the best going today. He's a great ball buster.
Here's a clip where he rips into Nerd Jesus aka Steve Jobs.

Bill Hicks , far and away the best standup comedian ever IMO. all his stuff is awesome, but his Sane Man DVD in particular is jawdroppingly funny

Steven Wright. his one liners are hilarious. best one liners ever

there's some others I quite like... Frank Skinner always makes me smile.  Ricky Gervais's stand up shows are pretty funny

Not entirely sure I really enjoy Bill Hicks but don't usually actively go and watch it, I recently went and watched a full set I hadn't seen of Dylan Moran which might have even been funnier than the set I saw a few years ago. Always try and keep up with Bill Bailey I recently saw Qualmpeddler and it was good as usual. Other than that occasionally surf around Youtube looking for exceptional sets and stand up comics they are sort of hard to find imo.

used to think bill bailey was really funny on nevermind the buzzcocks, but for some reason when I watched some of his stand up stuff it just seemed a bit flat to me?

maybe it's a buzzcocks thing because Simon Amstell used to crack me up on that as well, and his stand up show was rubbish! (imo)

Heyya Doc!  Long time no post. Glad to see you made it back.

currently i think my big two are Jeff Dunham and John Pinette.

Well hello there, Bushma.  WyreWizard talks a lot about you.  He think that you deserve a master's degree in physics because you are so knowledgeable.

Jeff Dunham, heard the name but never seen his performance.

John Pinette, the Bostonite.  I have seen a couple of his performances and I remember when he was a referee for the short-lived show, Grudge Match.  Both times I saw him were on MTV's half-hour comedy hour.  He was pretty good at raising the pitch of his voice without inhaling helium.  I also remember those few times on the Grudge Match how he was always flirting with Theresa Ring.  I remember when he finally got her to kiss him.  He looked like he was most elated!

I have often imagined John going to the lounge and consulting with ring announcer Michael Buffer or commentator Jesse Ventura for advice on winning a girl's affections.

But also in a way, Pintte reminds me of that one stand up gal who's voice was very high pitched.  Felicia Michaels was her name.  I remember seeing her on an episode of Full House.

That's nice of him, but there's no way I could do it.  I like learning but I have issues focusing on one thing for a length of time.  Physics would be WAY out of my league. Can you get an honorary master's in underwater basket weaving?

Jeff Dunham, heard the name but never seen his performance.

Take an hour and have a good laugh.

Hey WW.
Why cant you just admit who you are-say you don't wanna be a troll no more-and we can all be freinds?
This is a nice, friendly post. I like this version of you better.
BUT-your lying about your identity is troubling.
Anyway-you seem to be trying to be better-even if you are schizophrenic.
My favorite stand up comic-gee-I really like Steven Wright-I wouldn't call him my favorite-and-I also like George Carlin.
I always liked Henny Youngman.

He just comes up with some insane s**t like a machine gun-it's all with a sentence apiece-no long stories-just BAM BAM BAM!!!

Bizarre - Henny Youngman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ri3aL8At44I#)

I won't say it to you, RCM but I will tell you this.  Wyre says you are a two-edged sword.  He also says you'd make an interesting addition to our weekly movie critiques

^Also, when did Simon Cowell obtain a doctorate? And in what?  :teddyr:
