Title: Comic Book Movies -- Give Us the Weird Stuff
Post by: Mofo Rising on February 22, 2014, 01:35:01 PM
So superhero movies are probably the biggest box office draw going these days. Don't get me wrong, I love them. Frankly I'm impressed Marvel has been able to pull off what they have.

The Guardians of the Galaxy movie is probably the furthest any superhero movie has gone into how weird comics can get. It pleases me no end to see Rocket Raccoon and Groot come to life.

However, DC and Marvel have been making comics for a long time, and not every story that has come down the pike has been good. Or even made sense. There are some stories I would love see come to life on film that will never, ever happen.

But it'd be great. For example, I would pay good money to see a movie made of this:

And while we have not seen Advanced Idea Mechanics show up in a Marvel movie yet, it is still my dream to see this fellow enshrined in film:

So what weird, strange corridors of comic-dom would you like to see made into a movie?

I'd kinda enjoy seeing the New Fantastic Four get together for a movie.

A.I.M was in Iron Man 3

Sticking with the established characters with movies already, I'd love to see a Thor sequel/spin-off with Beta Ray Bill.

Of course, being the kaiju fan that I am, I'd love to see Marvel films based of of their old monster books like Fing Fang Foom
(http://static1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120210000827/marveldatabase/images/c/cb/Fin_Fan_Foom_classic.jpg)

I'm kind of getting that, because that's where Groot  (whose in Guardians of the Galaxy) is originally from, but there's so many great old crazy monsters from that time, there could be a whole separate line devoted to them.

A.I.M was in Iron Man 3

I had completely forgotten about that. MODOK and Fin Fang Foom are two of my favorite characters. Literally, two of my computers are named after them.

It's never going to happen, but I can wish they will.

I also want to see one of the movies use Arcade as a villain.  How could you not love a crazed wisecracking guy in a disco era leasuire suit that uses a murderous themepark to carry out assassinations?

I have always wanted to see a movie about my favorite DC character of all time: LOBO!

Rob Zombie has the build and the look to pull it off, but I don't think he has the acting chops to capture the character properly.

What better story to use for a movie than the Lobo Christmas story that is a take-off of Heart Of Darkness in which the Easter Bunny hires Lobo to sneak into the North Pole and take down a psychotic Santa?!?!

And to my surprise, there is a short fan film--definitely not safe for work (language and some violence):

The Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special (2002) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuRIJA7KyHE#)

CREATURE COMMANDOES

A group of soldiers are turned into monsters in a project that's part Captain America's origin part extreme psychological warfare project.

And they fight Nazis in World War II... and sometimes Dinosaurs.

Tell me you wouldn't watch this movie.

Ozzymandias speaks: I've wanted an Inferior Five cartoon. It should be retro style like the stuff from SNL. The Five at the end of every show performs a bubble gum rock song. Also, at the end of the story the villain must always say, as he is lead away by the cops, "I would have gotten away with it if it hadn't been for those meddling kids."

For movie ideas (maybe a TV series) there's the entire series of "What If..." Comics.

The Grant Morrison run on Doom Patrol would really suit a treatment from Del Toro:

Preacher is potentially coming to tv so I'll hold fire on that one.

No idea how it would work [or ever get greenlit due to the mature rating it would no doubt receive but Transmetropolitan would be incredible.

I think Luke Cage is coming to TV as part of a Netflix/Marvel deal, so there's that option I guess.

I second a Luke Cage movie, but it's gotta be set in the early 70s and he's gotta sport the bright yellow shirt and chain-link belt combo shown above. :bouncegiggle:

Luke had the best dialogue in those early issues, he was constantly saying Mr. T.-esque stuff like "Sweeeeeet Christmas! Step aside, suckers, Luke Cage is comin' thru!"  You could tell that he was written by a white guy.  :bouncegiggle:

Burgomaster, I like your comic book style. Awesome, awesome picks. Almost all comics I also loved.

I'd add the following:

The Spectre

The Question

Animal Man

The Metal Mean

New Gods

Someone mentioned Lobo, how about L.E.G.I.O.N.?

For something on a truly epic grand scale (would probably have to be animated):

^^ AMBUSH BUG! HELL YES!!

If they ever made an Ambush Bug movie, I would be camped out in front of the theatre a month prior, screaming "SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!" at random passersby till the film opened.

I loved the Legion of Substitute Heroes when I was a kid, actually I loved the Legion of Super Heroes too. Legion itself would be a cool movie what with characters like Ultra Boy, Brainiac 5, Triplicate Girl, Wildfire, Bouncing Boy, Phantom Girl, Sun Boy, Saturn Girl, Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad, Timber Wolf, Shrinking Violet, Sensor Girl, and of course Superboy. For true weirdness, there's always Matter-Eater Lad.

We've seen Luke Cage suggested but why not the team of Power Man and Iron Fist? (combining Kung Fu and Blaxploitation)

Keith Giffen's version of the Justice League would be interesting to see go down...

I'd also love to see perhaps an animated film based on this old comic series I enjoyed as a teen.

How about James Robinson's Starman?

I also kind of liked this version of the Ray.

Also...Usagi Yojimbo.

HAI!

Guy Gardner as GL. THAT I'd pay to see.

BTW...Matter Eater Lad...how uncomfortable a moniker is that?
"So, what does concreat taste like?"
"Like your head in a blender- look it's a weird talent, it's what I do, okey?"

Sadly, Vincent Price hasn't been with us for some time.  He would have been perfect.

Supposedly the new Captain America film makes a few references to Strange...so hopefully that's in the works.

Honestly, I preferred the second Deathlok.  There's just something interesting about a pacifist put in the body of the world's greatest killing machine.

Yeah I agree. I used to read the second version of Deathlok too but they started inserting too many other heroes in it presumably to boost sales (don't think that worked though)...another weird Marvel character I'd love to see get a film...

Captain Marvel (The Shazam version) would make a great Pixar style cartoon.

And on the "little kid gets superpowers" subject, Dial H for Hero could be pretty cool too.

I gather the Suicide Squad recently showed up in Arrow. I don't watch the show, so I don't know how good it was. I'm on board for them having their own show, or an Expendables-style franchise.

Apparently there was talk at one point of doing a Suicide Squad movie but I think that's been put on hold. I would love to see it though...a film with supervillains as the heroes more or less...

Another weird little comic I read as a kid...

I'd like to see Adam Warlock, the original Doom Patrol, the Defenders(original team), Swamp Thing(without the comedy of the two original films), the Inhumans, Morbius the Living Vampire, Vampirella or Silver Surfer with Galactus.

The Defenders. Brought to you by Marvel and ABC Television. To be shown on Netflix Streaming. But, I don't know whether it is the original team or not. I do know that with The Defenders we are also getting shows featuring Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. Also brought to you by Marvel and ABC Television and to be shown on Netflix Streaming.

And I'd look forward to another attempt at doing Vampirella. I don't know how you can manage to sexually neuter one of the sexiest female characters in comic history, but they did in 1996.

And let's take another run at the French comic Barbarella. Here we might have a chance, as both Angela Jolie and Megan Fox are said to be trying out for the role.
