Title: Weirdest Movies Ever, and Why We Should Watch
Post by: Robot Ears on March 01, 2014, 11:23:11 PM
I am an avid fan of a bunch of terribly weird, quirky, dreamy, surreal, moldy, dusty, forgotten, obscure, unheard-of movies.

Particular 80s movies that have been buried and unknown are mainly a territory of comfort for me.

I always seem to be on the hunt for an old weird rarity.

So I already am constantly researching for films I haven't seen.

However, I figured I would make a thread where people can name weird movies with an opinion as to why it should be watched...

(Secretly I just want more help to find weird movies haha)

I am hoping people list movies that are a bit uncommon or obscure rather than like...The Goonies. LOL... If you know what I mean...

Here is some incredibly random/weird/ movies that I love

I'll start with:

RatBoy
The Peanut Butter Solution
Gandahar
koyaanisqatsi
La Cabina
The Hour Glass Sanatorium
Garbage Pail Kids
FrankenHooker
Parents

Stuff like that. I am sure most these titles are nothing new to you folks here

But nybody got any other slightly to moderately rare movies to recommend?

Thanks in advance if this thread picks up any attention. haha

RatBoy- Because it's so weird you can't stop watching? lol idk

The Peanut Butter Solution- Made me feel like a kid again. Awkwardly.

Gandahar- Trippy and weird animation that I quite enjoyed.

Koyaanisqatsi- Incredible. Just watch...

La Cabina- Creepy and bizarre spanish horror short that I thought was bad ass.

The Hour Glass Sanatorium- Strangee

Garbage Pail Kids- The Garbage Pail Kids contribute nothing special or unique as characters. They simply exist. Which is hilarious. The plot which becomes this movie is random and unimportant. I couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of it.

FrankenHooker- Really cool movie in my opinion.

Parents- Being a vegetarian I thought this movie was pretty unique. haha

Society- Movie is the perfect kind of weird.

Help My SnowMan's Burning Down- Surreal....

I'm a Cyborg, But That's Okay- Okay so not old or rare...but I thought it was Amazing.

It's not as obscure as these, but WILD AT HEART was one of the strangest things I have ever seen.
And if you want to see Japanese weirdness at its most bizarre, HELLDRIVER cannot be beat!

Just watched Bad Boy Bubby...I think it took some pretty bold liberties which made it a unique experience to watch for me. Be warned it has some shocking and disturbing scenes, though. Some genuinely funny moments too. Bizarre movie that packs a punch.

A Night to Dismember (1983)

Doris Wishman's gory psycho-schlock-slasher began filming in 1979. Half of the movie's original negatives were destroyed by a fire set by a disgruntled employee. Wishman patched the remains into a bizarre feature by adding cheaply shot new footage, re-editing, and dubbing the entire movie including sound effects done by mouth (imitating barking dog, making squish sounds when someone is run over by car). Most likely one of the weirdest slashers made.

The Nostril Picker (1993) - probably the most surreal 'slasher' I've seen. A slasher movie on acid. And clearly filmed in the 80s, not the 90s (imo)

The Last Horror Film (1983) An obsessed fan stalks a famous actress at the Cannes Film Festival. Filmed during the actual Cannes film festival, without permission! I love this film, it's totally unhinged but great.

Valerie And Her Week Of Wonders (1970) Without doubt the most hallucinatory (if that's a word?) piece of cinema I've seen. Like watching a nightmare you had as a child....Recommended, then!
edit: I see Rev has this one in his 366 weird movies list too

FrankenHooker- Really cool movie in my opinion.

Parents- Being a vegetarian I thought this movie was pretty unique. haha

Good call on Parents, so dark and creepy, yet funny... The kid's performance is haunting

And the girl from Frankenhooker is hot! Don't think she did many other films sadly

A few of my favorites:

The Forbidden Zone: Herve Villechaize is king of the sixth dimension. This is my happy place movie; I just sit and grin stupidly through the whole thing.

RoboGeisha: The Japanese are a weird, wonderful people. This also applies to The Calamari Wrestler, Karate RoboZabogar and Mutant Girl Squad.

Shakes the Clown: The movie that wrecked Bobcat Goldthwaite's career, though I personally find it very entertaining.

A couple of my non-favorites that still fit here:

The Dark Backward: I hope Andrew doesn't hurt me for bringing this one up. I liked it as a teen. As an adult, it's painful.

Eraserhead: A favorite for some here; it just tried too hard to be strange for my tastes.

The Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda:
You don't have to be on hallucinogens to watch this film because it won't make a difference. The reel is soaked in acid and at the very least you'll catch some kind of contact high:

POSSESSION (1981) It's about a marriage that's gone bad. With swooping cameras, the birth of a tentacled monster and everybody over acting their asses off. It's very artsy fartsy, but very good if your into this type of stuff.

Why should we watch it? It's BAD but so bad it's GOOD. Get it?...

You beat me to it! Possession is an excellent allegorical "monster" movie about the desolation of a marriage. Some additional interesting facts about the film, the actress won an award at cannes for her performance, and this film actually preceded what many people consider to be the first "tentacle erotica" film "urotsukidoji".

Another suggestion for you is "Princess" the 2006 Danish animation film. It's extremely dark, but very interesting in both it's philosophical musings about violence, and sex, as well as its unique execution.

I'm going to throw in Mirror Mask
MirrorMask Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GA1iawlsKLg#ws)

You give Neil Giamen the keys to the Jim Henson Company  and you get one real interesting  piece of movie eye candy.  They story isn't bad, but nothing I'd call ground breaking.  Plenty of "Quirky for Quirky's sake"   elements, but its visuals really help its other world fairy tale-esque quality.

Rev's list is pretty much my go to as well.

General recommendations for The Forbidden Zone and Buckaroo Banzai.  The Forbidden Zone almost got me banned from hosting movie nights...

A couple of Japanese classics [but there's plenty of craziness out there...]

Funky Forest

Hausu
House (Hausu) Trailer - Subtitled (Nobuhiko Obayashi, 1977) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0NWIxl2VJk#)

Some anime for people with short attention spans and a pecnhant for strobe lights and manic activities:

Actually watching this movie right now. I'm enjoying it. It's a really awkward movie but I like this type of movie. So much random absurd things happening in it lol. I like movies that are comprised of random nonsense. The acting is pretty mediocre but it only adds suspense and unreality to it, if that makes sense. I'm about half way through it now. haha. Thanks for the recommendation. Really surprised I've never heard of it as mid to late 80s is my favorite period of horror.

Glad you enjoyed it. The original VHS release was encoded with MacroVision, causing random white flashes to appear on my tape dub - which added to the weirdness of the movie :teddyr:
I was thrilled when they announced a DVD release a few years ago. Beyond Dream's Door is quite special and certainly imaginative.

Well here's the thing I can often split the mind bending films I watch into two categories - "borderline pretentious, art film, film festival fings that will make you want to kill yourself" and "mysterious films that don't take themselves too seriously". I think Eraserhead is in the first although I've only seen it once. Not to say it's a bad film I just prefer the slightly funnier ones, or at least films that have some subtle comedy in there. Either that or I dig the mystery.

I actually have a full list on my computer of weird films I have noted over the years, I'll have to dig it out and find it, got films from roughly both categories in there.

I mentioned it recently - Symbol (2009) because it's hilarious yet epic at the same time. Oh also, it's japanese so you can expect loads of sadistic comedy :D

Exam (2009) is worth a watch and I had totally forgotten about it until my friend mentioned it recently.

The Oregonian (2011) has a ridiculously low rating on imdb but I think it's a 7/10 film, my friend and I have a pretty good idea what it's actually about which is further than most people seem to have got I would be interested to see opinions here.

I'll drop some more in here later

I actually loved it haha. It's entertaining with really awkward acting that only made it more intriguing. The story, music and gore effects all had a lot of fun. There was a lot more gore than I was expecting, too. The story was a blast for me. The ending really made it all seem reminiscent of 80s horror anthology episodes like tales from the darkside or something, which was a nice touch. Weird, quirky and unintentionally hilarious movie. Trippy, goofy and awkward. \ The dream sequences are pretty creative and original. The end result had me laughing my ass off. It also manages to be slightly smilingly creepy when all is said and done. Thanks again for the movie suggestion!

Everyone should see ERASERHEAD, even if you don't think you enjoy the genre. It's one of those "movies to see before you die."

THE HOLY MOUNTAIN is in the same category.

Technically these movies are neo-surrealism, not surrealism. True surrealist movies like "Un Chien Andalou" make no sense whatsoever and have no plots or symbolism.

Not a huge fan of THE OREGONIAN (although I loved the rainbow pee sequence). I liked Reeder's followup film THE RAMBLER better---a lot more intentional humor that made it easier to take.

Nice I'll have to check the imdb again, I was under the impression The Oregonian was their first film as well which I guess excuses it for some things.

I would suggest Where the Dead Go to Die but I'm not even sure I enjoyed it.  I kind of liked it but can't find myself wanting to rewatch it.

Begotten, Un Chien Andalou those are nice but think you may have seen already as they are kind of standards.

Maybe Delicatessen or Pi.

Watched a couple of weird ones on TCM Underground last night.
SONNY BOY (1990) Starring Paul Smith (PIECES, POPEYE) and David Carradine as a transvestite.
Synopsis from IMDB.
Quote
A small-town crime boss accepts delivery of a stolen car, only to find there's a baby in the back-seat. He and his transvestite "wife" cut out the boy's tongue and raise him as a mute accomplice in their crimes. When the grown "Sonny Boy" escapes and tries to make contact with the outside world, the attention he draws to his warped family results in darkly-humored mayhem.

THE BABY (1973)
Quote
A social worker who recently lost her husband investigates the strange Wadsworth family. The Wadsworths might not seem too unusual to hear about them at first - consisting of the mother, two grown daughters and the diaper-clad, bottle-sucking baby. The problem is, the baby is twenty-one years old.

Both were semi-enjoyable, but damn they sure were weird.

Beyond Dreams Door was a movie I tried to like but knew deep down I could not. It's like if you took rush or Genesis and made one of their songs into a movie. I'm more of a Sleepaway Camp type person idk

Surrealism in general is I think just ugly as a style. The Magritte painting with the British guy with the apple in front of his face, Salvador Dalis melting whatever. They are like doodles

For some reason, I dreamed about Manos last night, most notably the portrait of the master.

It reminded me, people will be quick to proclaim Manos as the "worst movie ever", I big to differ. Oh sure, it's poorly made and has almost NO budget, but for me there seems to be some eerie surreal atmosphere to it. The poorly-positioned shots combined with the dark locations and jazzy music score (especially during the end credits) create a feeling that I haven't gotten in any other bad movie out there. So while it is painful to sit through, I do think the whole surrealism of the thing saves it a little.

Still, it easily competes with Monster-a-Go-Go for worst film of 1966, even though I think the latter is way worse.

For another mind blowing experience, please check out Hellgate (1989). It's almost on par with Troll 2

What the heck.   Din of Celestial Birds, I liked Begotten and just recently learned of this one.

Din of Celestial Birds (Full) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3qpH9pr59M#ws)

Not sure if it is weird or long enough for you.

I used to spend hours scouring the local video store for weird movies.

One that changed the game for me:

This movie was dark, weird, and disturbing. It was one of the most enthralling things I had seen up to that point. This was in the mid-90's, weird movies used to be much harder to find.

So here's a movie I found in the not-so-ventured part of my video store. Loved it, and it kept me up on my continuing quest to find good stuff that shows up on nobody's radar. Now it's kind of easy to find good weird stuff, but in those pre-internet days, these gems were few and far between.

I've seen it since, and it's not quite as good as I remember it, I still remember it as that one movie that convinced me to try and find the weird stuff, because they can be life-changing. I'm not afraid to say I love populist films, but I'm always on the lookout for that new film that is different than everything else.

So, weird movie, seeking out The Reflecting Skin is worth your time. It has Aragorn in it.

I like the movie trailer voiceover at the end. "From the creators of Hellraiser and Hellbound comes...Hellgate!"

Alright already with the Hell! We get it!

I haven't seen this yet, but judging by the trailer and the pics I've seen of it, The Boxer's Omen looks like it has some real face-melting potential.

haha. This is one of the movies I've always put it in to my mind that I need to watch, but haven't ever sat down to watch yet. Thanks for the reminder!

Thank you! This is another one of those films I've always seen an option of watching, and I've always considered watching it, but never really knew ahead of time if I was in the right mood for it. Youve given me a great reminder t watch it very soon. Thanks.

Cheers :)

Nukie: An ET rip-off set in South Africa. It's meant to be a children's movie, but from my experience, the alien costumes in Nukie always create the same reaction in its viewers: utter horror. But that's really not even starting to really describe Nukie - the movie has so many bats**t crazy things going on. There's a bizarre amount of alien torture right off the bat, talking monkeys, a scientist who wants to be a clown, and for some reason there's an AI with a maniacal laugh, who's by far the best character in the movie.
