Title: If you were to pick three or four Godzilla movies for a marathon which ones?
Post by: daveblackeye15 on March 12, 2014, 07:19:26 PM
Don't know how it got startd exactly but a co-worker and I were talking about Godzilla. She likes the Zilla one from 1998 while I politely disagreed. Anyway now we're trying to put together a Godzilla movie marathon some time during Springbreak. Which three or four would you folks go with?
Currently leaning towards...

Gojira: Just important to show the first I think.
Mothra vs. Godzilla: Classic.
Biollante: Kind of wanted one from each era and since I can't do 1985/Return I figure this would be great too.
Final Wars: Plenty to laugh at, plenty of monsters. Figure it'd be a nice touch to close with the last Godzilla movie.

Second opinions?

Definitely use the original.  Biolante as well, as I think it does a great job setting the tone for the Heisei series.

For my own personal marathon, I'd go with....

Destroy All Monster-pretty much every Toho kaiju they had made is in that movie.
Godzilla vs Gigan.  Gigan been one of my favorite enemy monsters.  He's the first to make Godzilla bleed.
King Kong vs Godzilla.   Two of the most iconic monsters fighting.  Worth a watch.

Oh yes Destroy All Monsters is certainly up there as well, along with Three Headed Monster. I think Megalon and Hedorah would be hilarious, I do kind of want to show one of the trashier Godzillas and go 'well what you heard is kind of true.' GMK is up there as well but if it comes near the end I think they want something more energentic, much as I love that movie.

Sadly I have to wait for Hedorah and Gigan's re-releases in May, I missed those last time they came out. No versions of King Kong vs. Godzilla either.

I'd probably go for the most fun (for me anyways) monster mash-ups:

Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964)
Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975)
Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out  Attack (2001)

I'd go with

the classic original
Godzilla vs King Kong
Godzilla Final Wars

and ... the fourth one is the hard one.  I don't want a good Godzilla movie here.  I'm torn between the American Godzilla or All Monsters Attack.

Definitely the original one and King Kong vs. Godzilla...after that I'd have to think a little bit harder. There are very few I don't really like and wouldn't want in a marathon.

Y'know there's a scene in KK vs. G that still scares me after all these years:

It's the scene in the American version, where the military engages a newly awakened Godzilla for the first time.  These tanks come out of an underground bunker and as they roll to the shore, the camera quickly cuts to Godzilla walking to the shore amid the backdrop of a deep blue-nearly black sky, as he lets out this absolutely inhuman roar that doesn't sound like him at all. That still does something to me after all these years.  Note that they use Godzilla's regualr roarin the Japanese version.

Movies? Oh yes:
Gojira
Godzilla Raids Again
Destroy All Monsters
Monster Zero

All great choices guess there is no wrong one. Much as I'd love to either throw in Destroy All Monsters or Final Wars I have another idea. One Godzilla movie per decade or so to show off his evolution and back. So instead of Final Wars I'd show one from the 70s where he is a good guy so I'm thinking Megalon. I can only picture how much everyone will laugh at the infamous fly kick.

Right now...
Gojira, Mothra vs. Godzilla, Megalon then Biollante.

I can't remember this scene of the top of my head. The last couple of times I watched this it was always the japanese version. But I got the english dubbed version lying around somewhere in a UK-Boxset with the original King Kong and another japanese one...i think it was called King Kong Escapes (he fights a robot-version of himself in that one).

Well!...

GOJIRA of course.

GODZILLA Vs. MOTHRA, cause, ya need Peanuts with yer popcorn...

DAM cause, ya need a massive monster brawl, with aliens in the mix.

and - The MST3K of GODZILLA Vs. THE SEA MONSTER! Cause, that film is even better with good riffing.
"You could live in a Shogun shack..."
"Hey, can't a guy get a little privacy here!"
"I can fly! I can fly! I can't fly!...I can swim..."

Godzilla vs. Monster Zero
Destroy All Monsters
Terror of Mechagodzilla

Andrew read my mind on this one-I would include the original.
I really REALLY think these are the best Godzilla movies-EVER
(but I do have a soft spot for the Smog Monster-mostly because of the song and the guy eating corn.)

Save the Earth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnQbx-r3G-M#)

It's like a James Bond thing done for a Godzilla movie done by folks with no musical skills what so ever.
And the dead body in the tide don't help.
"Save the Earth".?
AHHHH! I cant even save myself. And you want me to save the EARTH??? Oh nonono please god help me.

Oh no, not Godzilla's Revenge. I'd so switch out Megalon for Hedorah since that one is both better but more ridiclous than Megalon. I mean drop kicking is one thing but flying is another.

Anyway if one of the DVDs/blu-rays has issues I'll totally have Three Headed Monster or Terror of Mecha-Godzilla on back up.

I'd throw in Godzilla v Hedorah for sure - that's probably the most bat-poop crazy of the lot.  And, it's a ton of fun, along with its weirdness (took me three tries to spell weirdness correctly).
