Title: If you had your own theater/drive-in?
Post by: Ticonderoga 64 on April 15, 2014, 04:44:41 PM
Supposing you had your own drive-in/theater...what kind of double features would you show? Stuff from any era, exploitation, mainstream, mix 'em and match 'em if you would like.

I'm interested to see all the great choices from other members out there.

I like there to be a permanent cinema strictly dedicated to local works.

There's always a local art gallery or nightclub trying to get something like this started, but in this town it's like herding cats.

I think my side of town should be known for more than just it's chop shops & adult motels...

We're assuming profit is not a motive, of course.

I'd like to support low-budget filmmakers by playing movies that would otherwise go straight to DVD on my big drive-in screen, stuff like APOCALYPSE KISS and BIKINI SWAMP GIRL MASSACRE.

Apocalypse Kiss (2014) - Official Trailer 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7J1l63XTys#ws)

Since I have a variety of tastes it would be whatever I damn well please.  I would like to have a combination theatre/ drive-in this way I can cover both bases for year round enjoyment.

I would have three screens, all in line of sight with one another.
I would put the director's cut of SUCKER PUNCH on every one of them, park my car in the center, and never leave!

I had a feeling I might be reading that.  :wink:

I would screen South African films in the theater during the day and at night in the drive-in. On 35mm film, not crappy digital projectors. :tongueout:

Coffy(1974)/Jackie Brown(1997)

That would be awesome, still haven't seen it actually. I guess you could put Foxy Brown too! But then it would be too similar.

I would only show movies I like...genre doesn't matter.
And I would only show stuff in their original language. Of course I would have to be super rich to do that because under normal circumstances I would be broke in a couple of month due to only few people actually paying money to watch movies in any other language than german in my town.

Most of mine would be 1970s stuff (with possibly a smattering of 60s and 80s movies).  Some would be actual double features that I saw at the drive in when I was a kid.

* BARN OF THE NAKED DEAD / INVASION OF THE BLOOD FARMERS
* BLOOD OF GHASTLY HORROR / BRAIN OF BLOOD
* SHAFT / SUPERFLY
* LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT / DON'T LOOK IN THE BASEMENT
* WILLARD / BEN
* SOYLENT GREEN / ROLLERBALL
* BLACULA / SCREAM, BLACULA, SCREAM
* SQUIRM / Ssssssss
* DIRTY MARY, CRAZY LARRY / VANISHING POINT
* JUGGERNAUT / THE CASSANDRA CROSSING
* THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN / THE THING WITH TWO HEADS
* THE HOLLYWOOD KNIGHTS / KING FRAT
* IF YOU DON'T STOP, YOU'LL GO BLIND / CAN I DO IT 'TIL I NEED GLASSES?
* BARBARELLA / FLESH GORDON

I remember KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE and THE GROOVE TUBE playing on some drive-in double features in the 70s.

The Groove Tube had one of those scenes where your dad saw it and laughed when he was younger and years later when you watch it you laugh just as hard (as in the case of my dad and I).

I'd play a remake followed by the actual sequel to the original just to mess with people.

Blood Mania/Blood Freak
Night Of The Lepus/Night Of The Demon
Frogs/Rattlers
Frozen Dead/Frozen Scream

My goal would be to sucker them in with a fairly tame title, and then shock them out of the back seat sex with the insane follow-up.

Yes, I am a bit of an arsehole.

I almost forgot:

Mwhahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh boy, that's like the dream of my life. One of the things I'd definitely show would be Kill Bill, both volumes together like they're meant to be. Maybe even the fabled "Whole Bloody Affair" version if that ever gets released.

I have an old Super 8MM movie projector and a screen.  I could sort of have my own outdoor theater in my side yard but each full movie would require like 5 reels.  I've seen full movies on ebay like Jaws, and some cartoon shorts that would go well with the drive-in type atmosphere, but 5 reels for a full movie kind of sucks.  That's a lot of intermissions while I change reels!

The thing to do is use the condensed films on the 800' reels.  Ends up being a reel change every 25 minutes, and usually it's a whole "movie" in that time.  If you don't mind spending more money, you can also get one of the ones that takes a larger reel.  There's a very expensive Super 8 projector out there that takes a 2000' reel if memory serves.   :teddyr:

I've done this with my Super 8 stuff a couple times.  Mine has an 800' reel.  Last time I showed a Looney Tunes short, the trailer for Sword and the Sorcerer, and the 40 minute version of The Sting (which is very smartly edited down - it contains just the main con of the title).

I got a Super 8 sound camera and projector for my birthday when I was a kid.  I had a collection of mostly 200', 400', and 800' condensed movies.  Some of my favorites were:

* CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON (400' and 3-D!)
* IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE (400' and 3-D!)
* ANIMAL HOUSE (800', mounted on two 400' reels)
* SLAPSHOT (400')
* BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (200')
* SON OF FRANKENSTEIN (200')
* FRANKENSTEIN'S NEW BRAIN (which was a condensed version of GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN on a 200' reel)

I remember getting a catalog in the mail for FULL LENGTH Super 8mm sound movies mounted on a series of 400' reels.  They were really expensive, but I very much wanted to get THE GODFATHER.  I think it was about $350 and this was in the late 1970s.  A small fortune at that time.

First this would be something of a dream come true for me personally. I'd probably go with lots of AIP films personally with a dash of some British sci-fi/horror imports. The Herman Cohen produced films, Hammer films, the Corman Poe films, etc. The basic theme though would be people battling monsters of different sorts.

The Blob (1958), I Was a Teenage Werewolf
The Creeping Unknown, The Creeping Terror
The Crawling Eye, Fiend Without a Face
Brain From Planet Arous, The Brain That Wouldn't Die
Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (1958), Village of the Giants
Blood of Dracula, The Brides of Dracula

I'm going to keep going with current stuff from up and coming exploitation movie filmmakers instead of the nostalgia classics.

That's a pretty cool concept for a musical horror double feature. (I haven't seen either of them).

Dunno if you're aware, but there's actually been some fairly recent Super 8 releases.  There's a condensed version of Captain America (the Chris Evans version), for example, and a number of trailers.  Partly Cloudy (the Pixar short) is on Super 8.  There's small print runs still being made by small companies, I guess.  They're quite expensive still.  If you want to buy a feature, sometimes older films (like Laurel & Hardy) features can be had for $30-$100.  Anything in color will likely be $150+.  I moved into a smaller place and had to leave my film equipment in storage, otherwise I'd still have em.  Greatly enjoyed projecting stuff on film, a lot of fun.

Only three movies I wanted to see this year. Jodorowsky's DUNE; not playing in my town. Under The Skin; missed it altogether. The Creep Behind The Camera; not holding my breath...

I think I'd seek out the really obscure & indie crap that isn't gonna get much cinema play.

I'd love to see some 80s/Early 90s cheese blown up to theatrical size, being more badass than ever. Something about a screen that size must make the cheesy goodness seem more intentional than ever before if you know what I mean. I'd love it. Plus I'm an 80s kid wannabe... (I was a 90s kid *sigh*)

I'd play stuff like...

Night of the Creeps
The Brain
TerrorVision
FrankenHooker
House
The Gate
The Video Dead
Child's Play
Killer Klowns From Outer Space
Spookies
Neon Maniacs
Flesh Eating Mothers
Rabid Grannies
Troll
PumpkinHead
Ticks/Infested
Class of 1999
Maniac Cop 1 and 2
Beyond Dream's Door
Phantasm 2 and 3
Slime City

god... I'd be in heaven...
