A lot of ways I guess, my first reaction is maybe start a youtube? But I could be biased because I saw Ashens subscribers shoot to ridiculous levels over the years

I was thinking written reviews but I'm not ruling that out.

Reviews of what?

Writing is one of the most competitive fields you could enter. Everyone thinks they can do it, and lots of people actually can. The general advice is to write 100 pieces and hope for 1 paid publication. Getting a degree in your field will speed the process up (i.e. if you want to do movie reviews take film courses---you'll make useful connections from your professors).

You have to have an insane number of views on YouTube just to make pocket change.

This is true it's the same with google adsense, but in combination with your own site or something like that it can be a great base for more independent promotion.

My dad writes reviews for these guys (http://www.aaamusic.co.uk/) but it's really like temping hours I think. I can imagine there being a site that tells you what to go out and reviews and pays you weird hour minimum wage for it, for some reason I imagine this online industry being a little bit like surveys, ton of work for very little cash in 99.9% of places. (like those online audio transcription jobs, which despite typing 100WPM I can't seem to get paid jack for)

I've found adsense pays much better than YouTube. I gave up on YouTube. But I think you're right that YouTube can help indirectly with branding/presence, it's just not a moneymaker in itself except for the top 0.1% of players.

Speaking from my personal experience, the best way is to just write as many as you can for NO money for right now.  Most sites are constantly on the lookout for writers - if they publish your stuff, promote the heck out of it anywhere you can (a GREAT way is to tweet it, including one or two of the stars' twitter handles.  If the review is well written, they'll generally retweet).  When the right people notice you, you just might start to have a few offers come in.  Like they said, it's hard to get rich off of it, but it's certainly possible to get the bills paid!

You guys made good points. I'll start writing non-profit reviews. I think I'll start with the new Spider-Man after I see it.

I do accept reader reviews, but it must be a "weird" movie and you must follow the site format.

Of course Andrew accepts reader reviews here, though he hasn't officially published one in a long time.
