Title: The most violent film you have seen?
Post by: DrSimonCowell on May 22, 2014, 02:49:02 PM
Hello hello hello, bad movie lovers!  I have a question for you all

As the title of this post suggests I am asking you, what is the most violent film you have seen?  I am talking movies of extreme violence.  You see dozens of characters killed in violent ways and many characters seriously injured through acts of violence.

For me?  The most violent film I have ever seen is 1990's Total Recall (Not its 2012 remake as I have never seen that one.)  Total Recall's use of violence is very gratuitous.  The whole film is a rain of violently killed dead bodies.  Its never more than 5 minutes of nonviolent breaks.  But I have only seen it once.  Don't care to see it again.  I honestly think Total Recall could have been a good story without so much use of gratuitous violence.

But tell me, bad movie lovers.  What is the most violent film you have seen and did you enjoy it or not and why?  Also if you can, please give a body count of the film.  You don't to watch it and count the number of characters who are violently killed.  Just give you estimation of the Body Count.

That is all.  ::Gives cans of beer to everyone.

Errrr I think you don't want to go down this road chap if the most violent movie you have ever seen is Total Recall (no offense mind, it's actually for the best). Like... I honestly am wondering if you are trolling right now.

1. A Serbian Film (2010) - a real "draw the line" moment where people who strongly believe in no censorship will reconsider
2. Irreversible (2002) - just truely horrific like all of Gasper Noe's films but some fantastic cinematic techniques
3. Probably some new age grindhouse thing.. maybe Six Pack Movie, Father's Day... something like that, I mainly like the Tarintino-esque black exploitation parody things instead of the ultra violence.

semi-related: my favourite opening credits of all time are on a Gasper Noe film
Gaspar NoƩ's ENTER THE VOID - Opening Credits (HD) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPxgi-PiNFE#ws)

Transformers 1986. So many beloved character brutally murdered, and many new characters brutally murdered.

Other than that I'd say Robocop 1987. From the slaying of Alex Murphy to the various revenge killings of his cyborg-self.

Dead Alive is practically wall-to-wall with gore, but very comedically so.

Probably Dead Alive but I didn't find it nearly as repulsive as Last House on the Left (1972)...know there are many, many others far worse, some I've seen only bits and pieces of...most H.G. Lewis films are very gory (not always convincingly so though), recall The Wizard of Gore (1970) being one of the most disturbing ones I've seen...that's probably the worst I've personally watched right through that was both gory and repulsive. Know there's much worse than that out there....

this is (or at least was) the most violent film ever

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087985/?ref_=tttr_tr_tt (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087985/?ref_=tttr_tr_tt)

Quote
The film made the Guinness Book of Records for having the most acts of violence of any film up to that time. According to their calculations, 134 acts of violence occur per hour, 2.23 per minute.

Was thinking the same thing myself. TOTAL RECALL?  Violent? TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE has a much more serious reputation for violence, though it doesn't deserve it.  MAKE THEM DIE SLOWLY?  Or is it CANNIBAL FEROX?  LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT?   I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE?  DAWN OF THE DEAD?  THE TOXIC AVENGER?  Uhm, that's merely a scrape.

STAR WARS. It was as if a million voices cried out and were suddenly silenced.

I vividly remember walking out of the theatre after seeing the original "RoboCop" in 1987 and saying to my buddy, "Holy cow, that was the most VIOLENT movie I have EVER seen in my LIFE! F*cking AWESOME!!!!!"

The Rambo films have to rate pretty high in terms of violence...actually many 70s- 80s action films probably deserve a mention. How about the late 70s, early 80s slashers? The Terminator films? Some of the Troma movies...

If you're talking just the most disturbing or gory violence, then these wouldn't apply, but if you're just talking sheer AMOUNT of violence, I gotta say you can't beat a double feature of Deadly Prey and Deadliest Prey.  The violence is all pretty cheesy, but they probably have just about the largest number of violent acts you could find.  Now, as to the number of people killed in them, that's a tricky question.  TONS of characters died, but when you look closely enough, you'll see that many of them are played by the same people with a different hat, so...

Rambo (2008) Yes - the last part was SUPER violent 200+ kills - 50 cal, tons of blood and guts everywhere.

I was thinking the same after the EVIL DEAD remake (2013)
Imo that was over the top violent - lots of gore!

I have seen a lot of violent films, including the original EVIL DEAD and the remake, ROBOCOP, DEAD ALIVE, and one crazy zombie flick whose title I can't remember but whose level of violence was absolutely insane!

As far as violence that really bothered me, though, probably SAVING PRIVATE RYAN - because it was a realistic depiction of what my Dad's generation lived through.

And THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, because it was a realistic depiction of the price the Son of God paid to redeem me.

Ya know, now that I think about it, it may not have been a zombie film.  Just a "guy goes psycho and wastes everybody" kind of movie.
But I can't remember the name of it.  Maybe SUMMER OF SLAUGHTER?

I saw a trailer for two Asylum movies that were nothing but almost nonstop gore and violence in just the trailers (one was a zombie film [Dead Men Walking] and the other about a demon [Shapeshifter]....not sure about the films...but they looked awful.

For me, there are two types of violent films:
high body count
and disturbingly graphic violence.
We'll take the 2nd one 1st.

What do I mean by disturbingly graphic violence? For me it is . . .
decapitations
other injuries to the head and throat (shootings, bludgeonings, etc.)
injuries to the chest and/or stomach that result in coughing up or vomiting up of blood.
Examples: . . .

Face of Fear
Richardo Montalban, as the hero, and the villain are having a gunbattle on the beach, and the villain catches a bullet right between the eyes. What made this memorable was how the villain's eyes rolled up in his head, so only the whites showed.

Intolerance
Two men are fighting with swords. Then all of a sudden the one on the left loses his head.

Unknown
Similiar to "Intolerance," but the fight is closer to the camera, and when the man on the left loses his head, his body flops toward the camera, and two fountaining geysers of blood erupt out of his neck.

Sword of Lancelot
helmet and skull split open by a sword

War and Peace (1966)
the rose of death ever blooming. A young boy is tied to a stake in front of a firing squad. Shots ring out. Boy jerks forward as blood spurts from neck. Body continues to jerk downward, till it just sags still tied to the stake.

Frankenstein: the True Story
the sound of a woman's sewn on head being ripped off her body.
a man's head strikes a wall, leaving traces of blood and brains on the wall.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail
limbs lopped off.
man stabbed through the eye slit of his helmet. Blood spurt.

Cry of the Banshee
2 men fighting over a gun on a staircasel. Gun goes off. Man on left gets full load of buckshot in the face, which is no longer there.
Boy stabbed in the stomach by a knife. Starts to hemorrhage blood from mouth.
Woman has throat slit, so she dies ssslllooowww!

High body counts

Top 10 (200 or more deaths)
202 Beau Geste (1967)
219 The Alamo (1960)
228 Shaka Zulu (TV)
229 Zulu Dawn
238 The Longest Day
246 300 Spartans
256 Khartoum
287 Gettysburg
455 War and Peace (1966)
635 Waterloo

But, all these pale next to "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King," with 836 deaths according to the website moviebodycounts.

I am glad someone brought up "Red Dawn" with 101 deaths. Obviously, not in the top 10 nor in the top 20 nor in the top 30 nor in the top 40, but in the top 50, if barely.

It is in the Top 10 films of child deaths, where it is 8th with 7=6 boys +1 girl. The others . . .

1. Doctor Zhivago. 13. All boys
2. Bugsy Malone. 12. All boys.
2. Village of the Damned (1960) 12=6 boys + 6 girls.
4. Cemetery Man. 10=8 boys + 2 girls
4. Massacre at Central High. 10=8 boys + 2 girls.
6. Village of the Damned (1995) 9=4 boys + 5 girls.

Fewer children than the original, and one of the children, a boy, is allowed to walk away at the end of the film.

7. Swarm. 8=5 boys + 3 girls
8. Basketball Diaries. 7. All boys.
8. Red Dawn.
8. Revenge of the Teenage Vixens from Outer Space. 7=3 boys + 4 girls.

Total 95
24% Girls
76% Boys

As for women

1. Perils of Gwendoline = 13
2. Hercules II = 12
3. Hooded Angels = 9
3. Lair of the White Worm = 9
5. Terror in the Aisles = 8
5. Westward the Women = 8

These counts are to the best of my ability, but I do not guarantee the total accuracy of any of the figures.

For child deaths, I'd have to imagine that Hawk Jones and Beware... Children at Play have to be pretty high up there...

Just wanna throw in two anime that I remember being pretty gory and violent...Ninja Scroll and MD Geist. You could also mention Kill Bill Vol. 1 with the Battle against the Crazy 88. Even though it was in black and white (with the japanese version being in colour) it was very bloody.

Heh yeah, Wolf Creek 2 was a lot more graphic than the first one - I feel like unfortunately the way the market is for those type of films it maybe had to come back a lot more violent instead of psychologically intimidating (which personally I think it still is) which the first one mastered at.

Raid Redemption I think I may have to rewatch, I don't remember it being overly graphic just having intense stunt direction re: fight scenes.
