Title: INDY HITS A TRIPLE! THREE RENTALS, THREE THUMBS UP!!
Post by: indianasmith on June 25, 2014, 12:09:49 PM
Summer is when I do a lot of movie watching, and this summer has been no exception.  Yesterday I rented three movies, and was very favorably impressed with all three.  That's really beating the odds; normally I'm lucky to get one really good movie out of three rentals. First in the line up was:

CARVED: THE SLIT MOUTHED WOMAN (2007)
A small town in Japan has an urban legend about a woman who roams the streets wearing a trenchcoat and a surgical mask.  She walks up to people and asks: "Am I pretty?", then pulls aside the mask to reveal a mouth that has been slit open from ear to ear. If they say "Yes" or "No" she either kills them or cuts their face up to resemble hers.  Now a string of disappearances are linked to sightings of the Slit Mouthed Woman, and it's up to a school teacher to find the abducted children and try to lay the Slit Mouthed Woman to rest once and for all.  This was an interesting concept and featured some horrific visuals, but the execution was shaky in some parts. Still definitely worth watching, and very creepy at times.

HAUNT (2013)
This is one of the best ghost stories I have watched in a VERY long time. The Morello house was the scene of a dark tragedy: the Doctors Morello (she was a pediatrician, he was a dentist) lost all three of their children, then the husband was killed in a bizarre accident after trying to use an ancient radio set to communicate with the ghosts of his slain offspring.  Eighteen years later, the Morello house is sold to the Asher family, a psychiatrist and his wife who have three children of their own.  The oldest son, Evan, quickly befriends the girl next door, Sam, whose abusive, alcoholic father frequently chases her out of the house.  She and Evan become quite close, and together they begin to investigate the mystery of the strange things that are going on in the house. After a time they discover the ancient radio set, and try to discover why the dead of this house are so restless.  This is a brilliant film - it does feature some jump scares, but they are effectively delivered, the characters are sympathetic and likable, and above all, the story is compelling and horrifying at the same time.  Unlike so many of this genre, it does not fall apart in the last act but instead only intensifies and delivers a stunning conclusion.  I HIGHLY recommend this movie!!

This morning, after my wife left for her graduate classes in Mesquite, I watched:
300: THE RISE OF AN EMPIRE - the bloody sequel to the smash hit 300 from a few years back: after the defeat of Leonidas and his 300 Spartans at Thermopylae, the navy of Xerxes, commanded by Artemisia (played by the insanely hot Eva Green), must destroy Athens' fleet to pave the way for Persia's invasion of Greece.  OK, there is not much story here, but the visuals are beautiful, the sea battles are amazing, and Eva Green manages to flaunt her two best assets (something she manages in nearly every film).  The story isn't quite as compelling as 300 was, but it's still entertaining, and overall, this is a highly watchable, gore-soaked tale of combat, glory, and vengeance on the Aegean Sea.

Now . . . I saw a movie on the shelf yesterday called BIGFOOT VS D.B. COOPER.  I wonder if it's been turned back in yet . . . .

Ain't that the way of it?  Been there done it myself; you see what looks like this really cool movie cover and it's not even out yet.  A bona fide bummer, that one..

Interestingly, the slit-mouthed woman is an urban legend in Japan.  Japanese urban legends are pretty cool, often involving ghostly apparitions or mysterious deaths.

On a related note, the following short seems based on the common Japanese theme of haunted toilet stalls.
