Title: My "End of Summer" Double Feature
Post by: indianasmith on August 14, 2014, 07:08:26 PM
Well, we started in-service this week and I'll be back in front of my kids again next week, so a busy summer of B-movie watching is drawing to a close.
Monday I dropped by Hasting's to prep for my book signing and rented two movies:

OCULUS (2013) - After being released from 10 years of psychiatric treatment after shooting his father at age 10, Tim is reunited with his big sister Kaylee.  She reminds him that their father did not just go insane and kill their mother; he was driven to madness and murder by the haunted antique mirror that had been hung in his study.  Now that her brother is free, she wants his help in destroying it once and for all.  However, Tim is cured.  He knows now that the mirror story was just a delusion invented by their frantic, childish brains in an attempt to rationalize their father's homicidal insanity.  But Kaylee's research shows that 44 people who owned this mirror have died untimely and violent deaths, and others have been driven to insanity and murder by it.  As the evening progresses, Tim comes more and more to doubt his therapy as his memories return - and the mirror, having been dormant for ten years, is thirsting for more victims.

This is a marvelously creepy film, which has plenty of scares but does not over-explain itself, leaving the viewer wondering and hungering for more.  I really liked it!

NINJA APOCALYPSE:  In a post-nuclear world, ninja clans rule the land, raiding and making war on one another. When grand master Fumitaka calls on all the clans to unite in the face of a common threat, someone buries a throwing star in his forehead, and Master Cage of the Lost Ninja Clan is framed for the murder.  Now he and his four loyal followers must battle their way through an underground labyrinth of zombies, mutants, and bad guys in order to get home before their village is destroyed in retaliation for the Grand Master's death.

Wow - this one was a mashup of Enter the Dragon, Star Wars, Dragonball Z, and Dawn of the Dead, with a touch of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly thrown in.  Not great, but definitely entertaining!
