Title: Can Heironymous Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness? (1969)
Post by: akiratubo on August 22, 2014, 09:32:17 PM
:extends middle finger to movie:

There's this kid named Heironymous Merkin.  He's Jewish.  He falls for this girl named Mercy Humppe, whose function to the plot is exactly what it sounds like.  She's not Jewish.  Obviously, the relationship is a non-starter.  No matter how rich and successful he becomes, no matter how many women he beds, Heironymous Merkin just can't forget Mercy Humppe and find true happiness.  Also stars Milton Berle as the Devil, aka Eddie Filth.

This is an art film.  And a musical.  I suspect director/writer/star/everything else Anthony Newley set out to create the worst film ever made.  The only reason I won't say he succeeded is because I haven't seen every movie ever made.  But, I've seen The Jar, Blackenstein, Tank Girl, Alligator Alley, Headless Eyes, and plenty of other true s**t.  CHMEFMHaFTH is a match for any of that lot.

Hey -- !  I just realized ... Heironymous Merkin.  Mercy Humppe.  They have the same initials, just reversed!  That symbolizes how backwards non-Jews are to Jews and vice-versa and BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!  f**k YOU, Anthony Newley!

But how do you REALLY feel about the movie?

Yeah, it's a shame; Newley was a very talented singer/actor/songwriter.. but man, did he star in such unbelievable garbage.  CHMEFMHAFTH is his nadir.  Seriously, how can a film with a title like that succeed, even as a bad-good movie?

I have wanted to see this movie for years, ever since I read about it in The Psychotronic Encyclopedia of Film.  I remember watching Anthony Newley on TV back in the 1970s when he was a guest star on afternoon talk shows like Merv Griffin.  Merv would say something like, "and here is Anthony with his recent top-10 hit song . . ."  Top-10 on what f#%@ing chart?  Then Newley would come out on stage and sing some dull love song that sounded like all of his other songs.

Likely explains why Tom Servo sang 'Sylvia's Mother' if anything reminded him of Anthony Newley.
Yeah, I think the best thing ever happened to A. N. was getting fried by radioactive slime.

Never seen it so far, but I am always looking for something bad, really bad, so I may just see it one of these days. As I said, I have yet to see it, but I do remember when it was first released to theaters, as it's title, one of the longest titles ever used for a film, at that time, certainly made it a distinctive release.

Markees on small theaters must have just said 'H. Merkin, Ect...'

No, but he certainly set out to make an ego-driven vanity project that plays like a bad Fellini movie on drugs.  BAD drugs.
