Title: FAVORITE DEFUNCT LOCAL MUNCHIES!
Post by: alandhopewell on August 23, 2014, 12:38:40 PM
For me, it was probably this place....

Bob's was an institution in Lorain; I wish I could've found a picture from when they were open. When I was in grade school, they were a block and a half from our house, and I'd often get the privilege of walking up there at night (especially Friday; Ghoulardi night) to fetch a dozen of assorted donuts and a quarter-dozen chocolate chip cookies for me....for some reason, I didn't like donuts as a kid.

In winter, their ten cent cups of hot chocolate were just the thing for that eight block walk to school. They had great fried chicken, potato wedges (first time I ever had them),coffee,  and pizza, not as good as Rosie's (which is still around), but still dynamite.

Bob's closed in 2004, two years before I got out....I'd been looking forward to stopping by for chicken or pizza, or at least a couple chocolate crème sticks....darn.

     What was your favorite place?

The Pit, on the corner of Tyler and Garvey in El Monte, was a great place to go after football practice, cheese burger and fries with a chocolate malt. The spot is a mini mall now.

Mass Cafe in Boston. It was an Ethiopian restaurant if you've never been to one I'd highly recommend you check it out. "Ethiopians are starving" you say, well yes but their culture is on point. I used to get some thing with chick peas that was so good it was incredible. The thing about Ethiopian places is that you eat with your hands. No silverware. You sit at the table and they dump tons of meat and stuff on it and you scoop it up with this bread and make like a burrito out of it. Since it closed I've been to other Ethiopian places but they are kind of fancy. I knew the owner and her kids and stuff at this one. great place Mass Cafe RIP

Stan's.
Place had good food at reasonable prices, and a wait staff who'd been there a long time.
A place with lots of regulars knows what's it's doing.
(Sigh) Adios, Compadres.

There used to be a hole-in-the-wall type of Doner kebab / Turkish grocery store in our town called 'Fruit Basket' (translated). Mind you, we have a few gyros and kebab places but none matched the quality, portions and prices from Fruit Basket. This summer the original owned (most likely) made room for younger relatives who are now running the place. Gone are the groceries, they turned it into a small "fast food" type of sit in eatery aiming at a younger crowd.
The portions got much smaller while they increased the prices. The food turned from fresh and delicious to bland. They don't add tzatziki anymore unless you ask, and then charge it extra.
The original place will be missed by many.

This place which was a landmark near Pretoria's Church Square since the late 1950s and which I started frequenting in 1987 when I came to Pretoria - the family that owned it virtually adopted me and even after I moved out of the area, I would still go there on weekends and help out.

Sad to see it close: a part of me got torn away this year.  :bluesad:

in the 90s used to be this little place near my aunt's house in ohio that would make you any flavor milk you wanted

summer 96 i housesat for her and used to walk up there almost every evening and got a glass of milk 'with a spike'

cactus pear milk 90% cacao chocolate milk butterscotch milk cherry milk peppermint peanut butter milk banana milk even opera cream milk which was so rich it almost choked you to drink it but tasted great

the list went on and on (practically everything except vellocet synthemesc and drencrom)

the old jewish couple who ran it finally retired and moved to florida and there's a coffee shop in that spot now

talk about trading down...

The was once a place called Burger Republic in Melbourne, which was then bought by a franchise called Urban Burger.  Burger Republic sold some very interesting variations of the traditional burger, including the 'Blue and Brie': a beef burger with brie and blue vein cheese.  Don't know of anyone else who does things like that.  Urban Burger itself has been closing its franchise stores lately and may disappear sooner rather than later.
