Title: Woud Caligula have liked Pinkberry frozen yogurt?
Post by: lester1/2jr on September 19, 2014, 06:45:12 PM

The Emperor Caligula was known for his decadence and brutality. Some speculate that he would have enjoyed Pinkberry and delighted in the fruit and so forth that you can top it with. He might have even drowned his enemies in it. It would have been a refreshing treat at gladiator fights and the women of Rome would have been able to stay in shape.

or

he might not have liked it at all. He wasn't a rational person. It's not beyond the scope of reason to think he might have hated it more than anything and gone as far as declaring war on it and had whoever invented it stuffed full of lard till they exploded in punishment.

What do you think?

You have completely overlooked the possibility that he might have done both - loved the stuff, overindulged, got sick of it, then had the
inventor put to death in grisly fashion.

You'd have to eat an awful lot of it to over indulge it's pretty light. I estimate it would cost 30 dollars for me to get one that I couldn't finish. maybe more

He could have loved it, hated it AND been totally indifferent to it at any given moment.

Reminds me of when Blackadder gave Queen Elizabeth I a mint, and she went insane wanting more. I wonder if people in the past would have been mindblown by sweets that we take for granted, or if, having few sugary foods at their disposal, it might have seemed overwhelming to them. That said, of course Caligula would have liked Pinkberry frozen yogurt. He'd have drowned people in it! (And, yes, probably have had them fisted first.)

You wonder if people would be blown away by it or if they wouldn't understand it like when Michael J fox does the guitar solo in Back to the Future. People nowadays are looking for something light that's also palatable, but back then that concern might not have factored into someones appraisal of a thing's taste. He might have been like "screw this, get me some Turkish delight" or whatever they ate for desert then.

I always thought it would be fun to take one  of the great tyrants of history - someone with a reputation for brutality and cruelty - and take them on one of the tallest, fastest roller coasters in the world just to watch them wet their pants! :bouncegiggle:

A little of both, lester. I'm not sure if something like frozen yogurt would amaze them as a new experience when their intake of sweets would probably have been fairly limited compared to what we're used to, or disgust them because it would be disturbingly sweeter than anything they'd ever eaten. I think it's taking more of a jolt to please modern-day palates than it used to. If you compare the sugar and salt content of today's snacks, for instance, with those of even a generation ago, there's usually been a big increase. I think it's a sort of sensory inflation, more being required to get the same result. I do know of an article I once read written by someone who tried to share fruit rollups with some people in the Amazon basin, and the people found the fruit rollups unpalatably sweet and spat them out. So whether what we think of as "just sweet enough" would delight someone in the ancient world or disgust them I don't know but it intrigues me. All kidding about drowning people in yogurt aside, you raised a good question.

Who? You mean the man who is regarded as the 2nd worst member of royalty ever to rule any country in the history of the world. The only ruler regarded as being worst is Czar Ivan the Terrible of Russia. That Caligula.

He might have liked it, if he had $311,000 to $615,000 to invest to purchase a franchise. A lot of money, but it is a wide open market. There are only 238 franchises out there at this time, or less than 5 per state.
