Title: The Puppet Masters (1994)
Post by: Trevor on October 24, 2014, 12:19:24 AM
I saw this last night and wasn't exactly sure where to put this but I enjoyed the film's almost stinky cheesy badness so I stuck it here.  :teddyr: I also stuck my gum here somewhere.

Everyone knows the basic story: mind controlling aliens take over a small town and almost the entire USA while several brave scientists try to stop the menace. The effects were good and there were a few shocks, but the ending was a let down.

I didn't know that helicopters could run on autopilot?

I enjoyed that one too.  Kind of starts out like an episode of the X-files or something and evolves into a world-threatening invasion thing.  Donald Sutherland has so many great one-liners, the other actors must have been jealous lol.

When I saw the "alien spacecraft", I thought that I was the uncredited art director / set designer but then I realized that it had to look fake.  Also I was expecting Donald Sutherland to open his mouth and start screaming at any moment.  :teddyr:

I can't remember the film very well at all.  Maybe I didn't see the whole thing?  I was like 11 when it came out.

I will add, the Heinlein book it is based on is quite fascinating - in particular, because the narrator is controlled by one of the "puppet masters" for a significant portion of it and gives you some insight into that psychologically.

I saw it, when it first came out, but I must admit I did not recognize it under the subject line, as I saw it as "Robert A. Heinlein's the Puppet Masters."

What amazes me and continues to amaze me, is for such a prolific and popular writer, how few of his books have been made it into film. Most of the adaptations being a version of his "Star ship Troopers." Though, his "Destination Moon" was made into a film, and his "Space Cadet" was made into the TV series "Tom Corbett, Space Cadet." Both of them being released in 1950. Thus, he can be called one of the early godfathers of science fiction on the screen.

Saw this one in the theater with my (late) friend.  Pretty dumb.  Sutherland, of course, was great.  The aliens with the long spirally cords that connected to their host makes me think of the cords that connect to your "points card" from your pocket at a casino.

I haven't seen that one since it first made the VHS rounds years ago. About all I remember of it is the alien parasite thingies were kinda cheap looking, and of course Donald Sutherland was his usual dignified-yet-bad-ass self. Maybe I should revisit this one now that you've got me thinking of it again.
