I love a good ghost story. They're fun to hear, fun to tell, but I think those who have had what they consider genuine paranormal incidents tend to keep the events relatively private, and the people who go around re-telling elaborate stories seem the least believable.

Inexplicable events occur in this world, and there have been people I trust who have told me about their own preternatural moments, I've even had odd happenings here and there, but when people go around loudly boasting about experiencing some slip in the curtain of reality, taking every chance to have it known, usually making the story more elaborate over time, that smacks of attention-seeking, not the puzzled awe and self-doubt that characterizes those times when I've felt the tales had truth behind them.

I subscribe to the "nothing unreal exists" philosophy, but I also suspect much more is real than we may be able to scientifically prove.

I know someone who swears she spoke to her uncle on the phone about an hour after he was later shown to have died. And you know, I do believe she's a credible person.

I also know someone who has a story of almost colliding with a transparent 1950s-vintage hotrod driven by a bloody-faced, screaming Greaser on a road near Ohio University, and I think her story is bovine scatology.

One of these tellers holds her tale close to her heart in an almost sacred way and considers it a private miracle not to be shared lightly. The other trots her loud little anecdote out at the drop of a hat complete with Stephen King-ish details about feeling freezing cold as the ghostly Greaser passed through her body. Guess which one seems more likely to me?
